Choosing the Right Dog > Possibly adopting next week!

First, congrats on the potential adoption!

As for advice, I would suggest taking things slowly, especially if you have reservations about Timber's reaction compounded by the fact that you'll be moving (which means more stress for all parties). Make sure that when you add the pup to your home to take him and Timber on a walk beforehand. It helps to get them adjusted on neutral territory before you bring them into your home, plus it'll expend some excess energy. Give Timber an area that is just his where he can get away from the puppy when he's had enough and also don't give the puppy free run of the house immediately. That'll give them both time to get used to the new living situation and to each other. It may take time, but I'm sure things will settle down.

When we added Miles, our first rescue, the adjustment period was long, probably a few months. He'd never lived in a house before, so we had to teach him house manners as well as get Gunner and Wiggles adjusted to his presence. There were times when I thought we'd made the wrong decision because Miles seemed impossible to house train and had some fear reactivity problems. Now I look back on that time and can't ever imagine not having him in my life. The reason I say that is because the stress will die down eventually, so if things are rough in the beginning, know that it will get better.

Good luck and share pictures!

Choosing the Right Dog > Has hearing about a "challenging" dog, ever made you want to get one?

Miles was the start of my love for a challenge. He came to us skinny, undersocialized, and with little house manners. I had to learn how to deal with separation anxiety, resource guarding, fear-related aggression towards people and dogs, and allergy management. When we adopted him, I had no idea the issues we would be dealing with, but he's been so worth it. Nothing makes me prouder than to see him grow more confident and comfortable with himself and other people. His progress has been slow but still amazing and I wouldn't trade all the stress it caused for anything.

I've set my sights on some other breeds that I know wouldn't be matched with because they aren't perfect for me, but I want the chance to try. Recently, I've become enamored with Miniature Schnauzers, a breed I thought I'd never have an affinity for. Then there's Border Collies, which take the hyperactivity of my GSPs to a completely new level, and Beaucerons, which are more harsh than I'm used to. When I feel ready, I want to give myself the chance to experience something different.

Ack! Mia, you reminded me that I forgot Old English Sheepdog! How could I have done that? One more won't be any trouble on the list I already have.

Money and space notwithstanding, my house would be pure chaos. I'd want at least one each of a:

German Shorthaired Pointer
German Longhaired Pointer
Deutsch Drahthaar
Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer
Vizsla
Pudelpointer
Bracco Italiano
German Spaniel
Flat Coated Retriever
Cesky Fousek
Irish Setter
Border Collie
Italian Spinone
Cocker Spaniel
Beauceron
Newfoundland
Miniature Schnauzer
Standard Poodle
Belgian Tervuren
Norwegian Elkhound
Scottish Deerhound
Greyhound
Smooth Collie

And, I think I'll stop there before I make myself look any more mentally unstable!

Mia, it seems as though you just beat Delilah to the correct answers for my last two! Congrats on figuring them out! I'll try to get a few more to challenge you guys tomorrow.

You can click the link for dog four, but here is one more try at getting it to appear in the thread.

Dog 4

Delilah, you are correct about dog one; it is indeed the Blue Picardy Spaniel. Dog two Tyler already guessed correctly, but Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer is correct. Dog three is not the (Wirehaired) Pointing Griffon, but a dog from another country.

Tyler, you are correct about dog one! Dog two is close to a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, but from a different country. Dog three is not technically a German Wirehaired Pointer, but an offshoot breed.

Shane, you're close. Munsterlanders only come in black and white colorations.

Shane, I hate to break it to you, but you're incorrect on both accounts. Good guesses, though! Also, I don't know why dog four isn't showing up in the thread, but if you clink the link it should take you to the picture.

Lillith, many of the herding breeds are affected by MDR1 gene mutations, including Collies, Shelties, Aussies, and some others. It causes them to have severe, and potentially fatal, reactions to many popular veterinary medicines, the most common of which is ivermectin, but there are others. There's a test for it now, and it should realistically be administered to any of the breeds known to be affected, or those suspected to be mixes of those breeds. It is definitely one of the largest concerns with many of the herding breeds.
