We use a ziplock baggie in the pocket also. It's not ideal in that if the distraction/trigger comes on fast I'm sometimes stuck fumbling with it trying to get it open. Gloves/mittens will make it even worse. We tried the clip on bag, but also found it too bulky and it usually fell off when we decided to jog a bit.

For winter I'm going to try using a can of spray cheese. It it doesn't freeze, I think it'll work better with gloves.

I should mention that another downside to using baggies is that Remy is sure that all good things come in baggies and that all baggies have treats for him.

Behavior & Training > Did I handle this right?

That's exactly what I did one day when Remy and I were out walking and I saw two large dogs running down an alley straight for us. Fortunately I heard the shouts from their owner who was right behind them so I saw them before they arrived. Apparently they'd slipped out the gate on her. They were harmless and ran a few feet past us to sniff some plants, but still, better safe than sorry.

Remy occasionally meets large dogs when we're walking and he's been around them at dog events so I'm not worried he took too much from it. Ever since the dog down the street was stalking him while we were walking by, I'm overly careful.

Behavior & Training > Target Sticks

I've just ordered a target stick for Remy. He already knows "touch" with my hand. Can I also use it with the stick too or do I need a new cue?

Also, can anyone recommend some good resources for getting training ideas for it?

Behavior & Training > The pros of living with a reactive or fearful dog.

I grew up with a dog who was easy going and other than a few bunny debacles (he was a schnauzer), a breeze. We kids subjected him to all manner of indignities (there were a few dress & baby buggy incidents he really shouldn't have been subjected to). I always figured it would be the same if I got a dog.

I had Remy for a month as a foster and I figured I knew exactly what I was getting. What a surprise I was in for. There are days I'm frustrated with him and too tired to deal with his issues. Days when I'm embarrassed because he's going psycho on some poor child just trying to walk to school, but I adore him and he's totally worth the effort. We're on a journey and we'll get there and for an impatient type like me - this probably is just what I need.

Behavior & Training > Help with pottying outside?

If they've been using the potty pads, then you should have a pretty good initial idea of how often they go and when. I'd log their activity on the pads for a few days and then start taking them outside just before you expect them to go. Once you do that I'd log as Ellie suggested. We had a board up in the kitchen so I could track how long he was going in between trips outside.

Are they crated at night? If so, first thing in the morning is the easiest time to get them started outside. They need to go and you can easily make sure they get outside first instead of going to their potty pad.

Behavior & Training > Teaching a small dog commands?

I agree that getting the treat down there is the hardest part, especially when you're walking. I was lazy about it in the beginning and Remy got in the habit of coming up to get it, which made everything harder. Eventually I got smart and started working with him on waiting patientlyfor the treat to arrive.

Remy also lays down when he gets too hot or if he wants to look at something and thinks I"m rushing him. I just learned to wait it out or use a treat to lure him back to walking. He loves "touch", so that works great for getting him up and moving.

I think it's a great idea. I've often wished I'd started one for Remy. Sometimes it's hard to remember that you really are making progress. I keep thinking it's too late to start one now, but who am I kidding, there's lots of progress yet to be made. I'd track things like what we were working on and how it's going.

Behavior & Training > Big crate or small?

Is she used to having access to her litterpan in her playpen? If so, then I'd go with a big one. Remy had one for his first month here. I had his bedding in the back and then his potty pad in front. He's in a normal sized crate for his size now and he's never wet or soiled in it.

Remy and I headed to my parents condo for the day (no trick or treaters there). We're back now and he's happy as a clam on the couch with his nightly pre-bed treat.
