I was a little worried about the poodle appearance as well...I didn't want a dog that I would be embarassed to be seen walking down the street. Haha. Turns out, it has never been an issue. It's all in the grooming...you tell the groomer what you want and that's what you'll get. Besides, these dogs are so far from poodles it isn't funny.

While it's true that she's not as huge as a Golden would be, she is definitely a big dog, and you'll notice that especially if you have Shi Tzus. We have two sets of friends with Tzus, and our Wheaten loves playing with them when they come over. I also know a few people with Shi Tzus and Wheatens both, and they make great companions for each other.
I'm not trying to talk you out of a Golden...I've never had one and I'd not be posting here if I wasn't interested in them too, but I ultimately went with a Wheaten and she's the best dog I've ever had.

| Barked: Sun Sep 27, '09 10:25am PST | | | | | | My Wheaten just turned one year this month. She has always been a chewer, and we've lost a few flip-flops and the kids' toys because they've been left out, but lately things have gotten much worse. Lilly has taken to chewing holes in the leather couch and pulling the stuffing out. She only does this when left to her own devices, so I've been careful not to leave her unsupervised. If we can't watch her, we will put her outside or in her kennel.
This morning I went out on the deck after she'd been out for about 45 minutes and found that she had pulled the grill cover (a nice Packers one that my wife got me last week for my birthday) off of the grill and had ripped it to pieces.
She's also chewed on the wooden end table and ruined the bottom of the slider to the patio.
I don't know if she's bored or upset with us, or what. There are only two changes that she might be upset with: our friends moved in together (they're finishing up school) and they can't have pets in their apartment, so we're watching their Miniature Doberman Pinscher for a year. She's only there during the week, as they come back and take her most every weekend. Plus, my wife really takes care of her, not me.....and she's too little for the kids to really interact with. So she's not getting more attention. The other thing is that Lilly was home all summer with my wife and kids, and now that school has started again (my wife is a teacher), she's left alone outside and, if the weather is bad, in her kennel.
Other than that, we give Lilly tons of attention each day, I take her on a long walk almost every day, she's well-fed, etc.
I really don't know what to do. I hate throwing her in her kennel and not being able to let her roam the house without supervision. Any ideas on how to correct this behavior? Is this a stage that will pass?
I hate not being able to trust her on her own.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier > Good Apartment Dog?

| Barked: Mon Apr 13, '09 2:16pm PST | | | | | | I've had my Wheaten for about 5 months now and she's a great dog. She's the only Wheaten I've ever owned, so I'm just going by what I know from her.
I'd say "no" to the apartment just because Lilly loves being outside so much when it's nice, or even not so nice. We have a medium-sized fenced backyard and she likes to stay out there playing for hours. She even takes naps outside. I try to bring her in, but she often won't come until she's good and ready.
At first, we left her in her kennel all day while we were at work/school, but since around Christmas, I've been letting her roam the house and then going home at lunch to let her outside. She does still like to chew things up, so I just make sure that all of the kids' toys, and our stuff is either put away or high enough that she can't reach it on her hind legs. She's a great dog other than this, which I consider to be puppy behavior, and she'll grow out of it.
I try to walk her once a day, but sometimes only actually do it 3-4 times a week. She loves being active, but is pretty mellow when indoors.
If you decide to get a Wheaten, you might have to compromise on not having an outdoor area for him/her to play in by taking more walks...which I don't see 30 minutes a day really working for that.
Ultimately up to you, but just a few things to consider....

I have had to really get on the wife and kids to not leave things (anything) on the floor, or even on end tables, coffee tables, etc. If it's not up high, it's in her mouth. : ) She keeps us on our toes.

| Barked: Sat Dec 13, '08 9:13am PST | | | | | | A little update here...Lilly has been coughing up all sorts of things since the leaves....I now believe she got a hold of one of the kids' toys and swallowed some plastic. She's coughed up bits of plastic, and is still coughing quite a bit. She's not quite herself today, not as playful as usual. Should I take her to the vet?
Anyone else have similar experiences that can give me some advice?
Thanks.... | | | | |

| Barked: Fri Dec 12, '08 1:02pm PST | | | | | | So this might be a unique problem, but I thought I'd post it here and see what kind of responses I'd get.
This morning we noticed that Lilly was hacking quite a bit. Both my wife and I stuck our fingers down her throat, but didn't feel anything. I saw her try to eat her dog food once, but she started choking, and only had a few pieces.
This afternoon, my wife watched her start hacking again and saw her vomit up a bunch of leaves (mostly undigested).
After putting her outside, she then watched her proceed to eat one leaf after another.
I wouldn't think that leaves would be harmful to her, but I'm wondering if she's allergic to them or something? I don't know how to prevent her from eating leaves while she's outside, aside from supervising her completely (which with two small children isn't very easy to do).
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier > Is a Wheaten the right dog for our family?

| Barked: Thu Dec 11, '08 8:54am PST | | | | | | Well, our Christmas tree will never be the same now that Lilly's here. : ) It bears the brunt of her chewing fetish. We have plenty of toys for her, but from a dog's POV....what's more fun to chew on, a bright, sparkly Christmas tree full of lights and ornaments, or a chew toy? We just have to stay on top of her and redirect her. The kids are quickly learning not to leave their toys on the floor, either. We had a few tears yesterday, but hopefully it's a lesson learned.
Other than all of that, she's a great dog! We've had a lot of snow in the last week, and I've never seen a dog that enjoys snow so much! The only downside is that I have to towel her off when she comes in, and she hates that. Therefore, she doesn't want to come in and I often have to go out and retrieve her. She's sneaky!
She can be pretty active, but for the most part, she seems very laid back. I'm not seeing that "Wheaten spirit" that so many Wheaten owners talk about, I'm seeing a pretty chill dog. Maybe that is still to come....
