Morgan, no biggie! I did things opposite.... I learned about kibble and then have switched to raw. I'm STILL learning raw stuff everyday!

Dog Health > Puppy wont eat the puppy food - only wants EVO

Sorry Jessica, gotta disagree. Protein does not affect bone growth in any way, except that a deficiency in protein can stunt growth.
Evo is not appropriate for a puppy because it has high calcium levels. THAT will increase bone growth and the risk of growth disorders.
To the OP: Try Orijen Large Breed Puppy or Orijen 6 Fresh Fish. Both are grainfree and yummy (and high protein), but have the appropriate calcium levels for a growing pup!

Oh yeah, she's fine. Has lots of issues because they don't really do anything with her (she's an animal killer and is aggressive towards people), but she didn't die from any food!

Oh absolutely Tucker. I hear you completely. If the GDL had even said what you said, about being concerned about the effects of the merger on the product, etc al, then I could even put weight on that. But she nutritionally bashed two foods in the name of "philosophical differences." That seems so bizarre to me!
And good for you for trusting your cats. I think it's important that we listen to our pets if they refuse something. My in-laws adopted a dog during the major recalls a few years back (where all those pets died) and she refused the food we were feeding her. We later found that food on the list of recalled foods.

Ehh...The last time I tried it, it was kind of gritty in my mouth and the fish flavor wasn't as pleasant as it smelled. I don't hate it, but I'll leave it for folks to feed their dogs way to go

Bandit, we were very proud.
I was also very proud of my husband. He spent the time teaching Reyna to stack and hold it, time that I didn't have to practice with her. He did a great job with her.
And of course we were proud of Bam... The mastiff Dog ring is competitive, so we were pleased with Reserve.

I am a fan of the Great Dane Lady, but I take what she says as a grain of salt unless I research it myself. She is very biased in the products she endorses, and I have no doubt that she is reimbursed for her endorsements. I have a hard time trusting an individual who stops endorsing a food for "philosophical differences" rather than the true nutritional value of the food. Harper, if you actually read her website, she poo-poo's Wellness as well (Wellness and Eagle Pack--the food she used to endorse--merged, creating WellPet, and suddenly she considers both very low quality foods).

Not the study that I was talking about, but still a good one that ALL giant breed owners should read.

http://mastiffmessageboard.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=40168 65

A quote:
Often puppies are switched from growth to maintenance-type foods to avoid calcium excess and skeletal disease. However, because some maintenance foods have much lower energy density than growth foods, the puppy must consume more dry matter volume to meet its energy requirement. If the calcium levels are similar (dry matter basis) between the two foods, the puppy will actually consume more calcium when fed the maintenance food. This point is exemplified in the case of switching a 15-week-old, 15-kg male Rottweiler puppy from a growth food containing, on an as fed b asis, 4.0 kcal/g metabolizable energy and 1.35% calcium (1.5% on a dry matter basis) to a maintenance food containing the same amount of calcium but at a lower, 3.2 kcal/g energy density. The puppy would require approximately 1,600 kcal/day. In order to meet this energy need the puppy would consume approximately 400g of the growth food (containing 5.4g of calcium) vs. 500g of the maintenance food (containing approximately 6.7g of calcium).

Okay... Giant breed owners, we need to be more aware of the recent science in regards to our breeds and nutrition.
* Science now says that a LARGE BREED PUPPY FOOD is recommended up to 18 mos or even 2 years.
* Science now says that there ARE appropriate grainfree foods for Large Breed Puppies
* Science is now saying that switching to an adult food particularly for giants, too early can be detrimental!
* Science is now saying that too low of protein can stunt growth!
* Science is now saying that there are FEWER joint issues in those kept on large breed puppy food longer.

ETA: Lucy, the point of a LARGE BREED puppy food is to slow their growth, while still keeping up with the necessary nutrients needed for such a large dog to grow properly. A recent study is showing that Nutrient DEFICIENCY is accounting for a lot more growth disorders in large breeds than folks think. I will see if I can track it down from one of the mastiff sites I'm on.
