| Barked: Sun May 3, '09 5:44am PST | | | | | | Another perspective: As the guardian of 2 rescued dachshunds, one fear aggressive, I have been 'rushed' by too many friendly dogs. In my experience guardians of friendly dogs are way too lax. I'm sure I have responded rudely many times. While your incident with the 'ladies' and your dog may have been a 1 time affair, there's no way of knowing how many times the women have been approached by dogs. It becomes exasperating! Especially, when you are taking all the precautions to keep your dogs and the public safe. Also, I am slightly handicapped. Looking at me you would not know, but I have had 4 surgeries on my right ankle. Walking is painful on bad days. You are only going to see me out with my dogs on a good day. Regrettably, my dogs don't get walks in the park as often as we'd all like because of my limitations. It ruins our walk when someone's friendly dog intercepts us. Even unfriendly dogs are loved by their people and entitled to a long unaccosted walk in a public park if the humans take precautions and act responsibly. Because my dog is the problem, I give everyone else the right of way and move my dogs well away from them. I feed treats and distract my dogs to the best of my ability. There are still times when my dog will react. I have small dogs because my balance is not what it should be. A large dog could pull me off my feet. I would probably not reach for your dog even if I was alone because for that reason. If I had treats with me and thought quickly, I might have thrown a handful of treats to detain your dog. There are people that would be distressed with that too, fearing poisening or tummy upset. My point is things are not always what they appear to be on the surface. Give the ladies a break and cut yourself one too. Next time have control of your dogs before you venture out. It's better all around. Your dog could easily have been hit by a car or lost. Even well behaved dogs will chase a squirrel or rabbit..... I suggest, you be the bigger person, make a point to see the ladies and apologize, tell them you will be more careful in the future. Then let it go....we all stumble. | | | | |

I think the taking of the kennel, food and dish is a good sign. Whoever stole Eggie is planning to take care of him. You will see him again. Let us know when he is back home. You and Eggie are in my prayers.

| Barked: Sun Oct 19, '08 4:32pm PST | | | | | | I had a similar problem with a careless neighbor. We had a 'hello' relationship. Their dog ran at Chance and I so many times, I lost count. No physical damage ever occurred, but I couldn't make progress with Chance's re-activity. Finally, I called the police and reported them. We've only had 1 incident since then. And the man of the house RAN to retrieve his dog. Of course, it was him that was oblivious to the dog walking past him and oout the door as he entered the house. Sometimes people just need a wake up call! We exchanged nasty words after the police showed up...well they had nasty words for me. I refused to engage in a fight. It ended any possible friendship. In the long run, I did them a favor. Their dog could have been hit by a car while running across the street to get to me. I urge you to consider letting the law work for you. | | | | |

One time I buy the Chicken small bites the next time I buy the Beef. And we use all the different canned varieties. Chance has a beautiful shiny coat. I recommend EVO.

FYI...California is the only state where by law they can not use dead, dying, diseased or disabled animals in pet food. I have been trying to avoid any products made in China. Sure does limit my choices. I have been boiling liver and dicing it for treats. I freeze small portions of diced liver and take out what I need every few days.

| Barked: Fri Sep 12, '08 3:31pm PST | | | | | | Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm going to give them a try and see what works. Here's one I have had success with. Collect, clean and remove any identifying labels etc from 6 or more plastic yogurt smoothie bottles. Put smelly treats ( liver, cheese ) in one bottle. Put all the bottles on the floor in a group. Say, "go sniff". When your dog picks out the one with the treats, he gets the treat. As he gets better at "go sniff", move the bottles further apart. Hide some in obvious places. Then less obvious places as he improves. You can also add more bottles. Have fun and keep those suggestions coming! | | | | |

He's a master of the squeak-ectomy. He's decapitated a Kong full of treats. I don't have a clue what to try next.
