| Barked: Mon Dec 14, '09 6:57am PST | | | | | | Thanks Sallie Mae!
Scruffy- She is on monthly advantage. She has been ever since my vet thought she may have a flea allergy. She also has a lot of environmental allergies and a possible food allergy. (the poor little one)
Thanks Leah for all the great info! I have tried the external way before..
The main reason I thought it was anal glands is because I’ve expressed them before.. but I’m never quite sure if they are emptied. I checked her yesterday and sure enough they expressed easily, so I was assuming that meant they are full. I just called my groomer and made an appointment for this morning!
I read that adding a little unsweetened applesauce can add fiber to the diet! I wanted to try that.
I've also add carrots to her food periodically... but that doesn't seem to be helping. She actually just started having the gland problems recently.

| Barked: Sun Dec 13, '09 7:45pm PST | | | | | | Lila Rae has started to chew her tail and it is actually started to lose hair. She just had an entire work up done about a month or so ago when she was peeing excessively, so I know there is no underlying medical condition as her tests came out perfect! (she gave blood to check her organ functions and her bladder was aspirated to check for any UTI).
The vet has suspected in the past that she has a flea allergy, but I'm thinking it may be her anal glands? Could this be too far off?
Thanks! | | | | |

| Barked: Mon Nov 30, '09 4:31pm PST | | | | | | Congrats on your new baby! I absolutely love the chihuahua breed, they are fab!
Your best bet for the hairloss would be to get your vet to check the pup out. Lila Rae does have hairloss on her neck too, though! She's been to the vet so many times and I know she doesn't have any strange skin problems, however, she does have allergies so I usually just expect that to be the problem. Oh and some dogsters think it could be from the collar rubbing on the neck. Lila Rae also has bald patches on the sides of her head and feet from her environmental allergies.
Dogsters usually suggest kennels, but I would think that whatever works for your situation is fine. Harley stays in the laundry room using a baby gate while Lila Rae and Tippi both stay in kennels.
My chis learned to NOT walk under our feet. Maybe that comes w/ age?
I'm not experience w/ dog parks so i'm sure other dogsters can help you out!
You are def on the right track by not wanting to baby her and being concerned about her socialization!

Don't think- about leaving- without ME!! |
| Barked: Sat Nov 28, '09 8:42am PST | | | | | | I agree with you, Quincy, and feel that the DFA website is a great starting point! Before I joined dogster I would have NEVER even dreamed that most of the "walmart" store food is not the best choices for dog food! SO I read many threads and starting doing independant research as well as checked out sites that many dogsters recommend.
MY overall OPINION is that most people cannot afford to feed their dogs EVO and the really expensive premium brand of dog foods (even though the rule of thumb is the better food, the longer it last and the less you feed and so on..) and do their best to stick within their budget and get the best possible dog food for the money. I like TOTW and my allergic dog has done well on the salmon formula (cleared up constant runny eyes and helped the itching tremendously). I don't always eat the best food or the most expensive because there are other places the money needs to go. Just like for my dogs. There are other necessary things my dogs need other than the most expensive dog food money can buy. Their health is important to me that is why I chose a dog food much better than some and that way I can feel good about what I feed them and know I can meet their health needs when they arise!
Thanks for the forum, I really enjoy all the forums on dogster and am glad we can voice our opinions respectfully!

Don't think- about leaving- without ME!! |
| Barked: Sat Nov 28, '09 8:28am PST | | | | | | Hope your throat infection clears up quickly!
Tippi is a ridiculously picky eater! Until I switched her to Natural Balance, the dog would barely eat! She would eat her entire dinner of Nat Bal with a little canned food on top. Now she is eating TOTW the salmon formula (along with Lila Rae and Harley) and gobbles it up. I still add the canned food on top. She seriously has amazed me at how well she is eating.. it has to be the food!
Oh and she also doesn't eat anything for breakfast. She refuses her food so I'll give her a few treats and then she's ready to eat for dinner. BUT before I took her from my parents, she was only being fed table scraps (this was in sept of 2005). It took a while before she realized she wasn't getting anything other than dog food.
Best of luck! | | | | |

Don't think- about leaving- without ME!! |
| Barked: Sat Nov 28, '09 8:20am PST | | | | | | My chis don't sleep in the bed with my husband and I. The main reason is that I'm actually allergic to them so the less dog hair in the bedroom, the better! Although they DO sleep with us when we travel. : )
I would LOVE for them to sleep in the bed and Tippi actually used to sleep in my bed when I lived in my first apartment.

| Barked: Fri Nov 27, '09 6:08pm PST | | | | | | Harley didn't bark once until she was well over 1 year old! Tippi and Harley are old souls trapped in little chihuahua bodies. Lila Rae is a bit of a different story.. she's a "talker". She isn't yappy, but she will make this awful talking sound.. It's actually really cute (of course I would think so, right?) The vet made a comment the other day about how sweet my chis were and that they usually don't see that from chihuahuas.. MIGHT I ADD that I was quite proud of my girls!!
My girls travel with us often and we have never had any problems with them being little terrors (ex. yapping or ankle biting).
YAY small dogs (especially my girls )

I wanted to add, we are also living in Louisiana! : )
