things to do- places to go- people to meet

Marlo,

Two a year is a good start! The more folks get into it, the more events will be organized for you to attend.

Stormy,

That Sheltie is our regional Gold Medalist for the 20lb class, and he's being featured in a major Sheltie magazine for pulling a cart.

The smallest dog I've seen pull is an Italian Greyhound at 10lbs, and he's one of the top dogs pulling in UKC!

All dogs love to pull, (as we see at the other end of the leash) and this gives them an outlet for pulling for fun.

Come on out and give it a shot!

We had a terrific weightpull! One of the largest novice classes I've ever seen, over 20 dogs pulled novice. From beagles to dalmatians to cockers to sled dogs, bulldogs and more pulled novice.

Photos of the novices, the 30lb class, 60lb class, 80lb class, 100 lb class, 125lb class and 150lb class are here:
http://alaskanmalamutes.us/IWPA-Weight-Pull-28-Mar-2009.html

The IWPA season is over until September. Both Cinnabar and Sebastian won regional gold medals for their respective weight classes!

We'll be pulling UKC until then, as their season runs year 'round. Interested? Check http://ukcdogs.com for events near you

A good place for equipment is - http://AlaskanDream.org/

Alaska K9 Weight Pull Association - AK9WPA - http://ak9wpa.org/ - promotes the sport of Dog Weight Pulling in Alaska

They have an excellent training manual here - http://www.ak9wpa.org/staticpages/index.php?page=getting-started

Get in contact with them and see if they promote novice pulls. From their contact page it looks like there are people in the organization in Wasilla!

Good luck and let us know how you do!
