Rook and Cirrus got a little sniffy-snoopy, and then got real boingy, bouncing and wrestling in the snow! Rook even caught snowballs that I threw in the air and exploded in his mouth! snoopy

German Shepherd > What does your dog like the most?

Rook

Dieta, do you think the dogs stand up at that moment just to drive your crazy?

I think Rook learned to go through our legs (between) at the first boarding facility we took them many years ago. They had a good time, and the staff was good with them. I know they were comfortable there because the next time they seemed excited to go there. After returning, Rook (and Cirrus) both started diving between our legs! It's like a game. Cracks me up!

There is no puppy ugly stage, just a "goofy" stage, I guess. Cirrus the collie was never in an awkward stage. Just getting fluffier and fluffier by the day (her name is like the cirrus cloud) like poofing up like no tomorrow!

Hey, Dieta, Rook's head is big, and HEAVY! When he was a puppy, he grew the big ears, then the long legs, then big head! You know how GSDs look when they are growing! Every morning it was amazing to see, and kind of scary, like WHOA! Our collie and sheltie didn't grow like that! Anyway, my husband got him from a local breeder advertising in the paper - no research done. Not show quality or temperament like some of you have checked on. And his hind legs point out a little funny, kind of goofy-like. But he's still our champion!

Oh, I forgot, Rook likes to dive right between our legs when he's being playful. Funny for me because I'm short and I have to balance of one leg for him to get through before I fall. It's not what he likes most, but I thought I'd share that with you all.

A good sturdy throw toy that floats in the water? It's by Ruffwear, and has a rope attached to a rectangular shaped stuffed material. We tried it during the snowstorm last winter, and Rook always got a mouthful of snow instead! And don't forget the good ole tennis ball.

German Shepherd > Another Protein Question
Rook

Big Baby Always- Whining

Barked: Thu Nov 26, '09 11:03pm PST
I've been wondering the same thing about protein percentages in the dog food. I've had two vets that say opposite things about how much senior dogs should get (one said less, one said more!). So, we are kind of just being careful and stay in the middle range like 18 - 25% protein. Anything above that seems to be too much for our dogs. Too much protein, according to some sources, can cause kidney problems. How much is too much, or too little, I don't know. But the holistic vet says don't worry about it, and keep giving lots of protein, especially fish.

I eventually ended up with Wellness Just for Seniors (18%), Wellness Large Breed (25%), California Natural Herring and Sweet Potato, Wellness canned chicken and sweet potato, Wellness whitefish and sweet potato, and Paul Newman chicken and brown rice. Wow! That sounds like a lot! But I mix and vary it, especially for our senior collie Cirrus who seems to be fussy. As a treat I give freeze-dried salmon treats. Rook the GSD gets a mixture of the senior and large breed dog food, because it helps keep his weight down. They seem to digest the food better than others I fed them, and have good energy, and no allergy problems.blue dog

Yeah, Risa looks like the happiest dog in the world!!! Woof!

Rook loves his pack, and his squeaky squirrel (except when it's teasing him from where Rook can't get it). It looks so real. After a nice long walk, it's squirrely that gets attacked!

Other than that, "ball" is one of his middle names (the other is "big baby always whining".

And he loves to be close to me when I'm sleeping, like leaning closer and closer until half of him (almost 5o pounds) is on top of me and his 25 pound head is on my chest. Oof! I'm happy to say it is very comforting, though...cloud 9

German Shepherd > Does your dog like to be petted on the head?
Rook

Big Baby Always- Whining

Barked: Wed Nov 11, '09 1:19am PST
Rook is cautious about strangers reaching over his head and nipped someone at a family gathering who patted him (like pushing his head down a little). A trainer/behaviorist I've been using lately has not had a problem from day one petting him, but knows to approach to the side, like while we are walking. She and her husband have the right energy for a dog like Rook that tends to be nervous, insecure, and fearful with strangers getting in his intimate space. She even played with his ears, too, and he just kept on walking. The petting, though, is not something he craves or asks for, but does tolerate to a point. That's why I trust this woman. She represents relaxation.

With us (his pack leaders) , we can touch him all over, including the head.
