While I sit on my computer chair, I hang on to Snowy's collar and let her pull me around the house.
She loves the game and I think it's so funny - my hubby thinks we are goof balls.

She is now in an advanced class and have interactions with children, elderly and mentally handicapped people routinely.
I know she doesn't particularly care for pat on her head, but she tolerates it. In fact, most of people don't even notice she doesn't like it. I don't think her not liking a head pat would be a cause for liability issue at all. She is also a show dog and she has major points toward her CH title in both AWSA and UKC - and the judges pat her head, open her mouth and touch her private area - I can tell she is not thrilled (LOL)with any of these and she gives me this look like "Look what I put up with for you, mom"
As I was saying, every dog has likes /dislikes. But concluding the dislike for head pat equals liability is a little premature, IMHO.

My, you are a handsome pup.
I am Snow White (or Snowy). I don't check Dogster as much as I used to, but when I do, I hang out at the German Shepherd forum.
I am also a member of American White Shepherd Association (AWSA) and United White Shepherd Club (UWSC). I like them because they are not just for dog shows, but they promote all kinds of dog sports, like herding, obedience trials and ability trials. If you are interested please feel free to pmail me.
Hugs,
Snowy | | | | |

| Barked: Fri Jun 12, '09 8:54pm PST | | | | | | Thanks Maizie Moo and Yolanda ! I am happy to be here! Fortunately my mom does not have a need for service dog, but she loves to help others (that is why she works for the Army - to assist Soldiers and their families) and felt that therapy work is very rewarding experience.
Thanks for clairification between Service dog and therapy dogs.... I guess I wasn't clear, my question was toward Spike's comment:
"I have been told that there is a difference between a therapy animal and one that does animal-assisted therapy."
Not the difference between service dogs and therapy dogs. (That I know! LOL)
Lilith,
Yes, I was talking about just service dog organizations, not therapy dog organizations (which is more rarer in Japan as far as I can tell).
Are you a japanese reader? If you do a web search in Japanese -type a word "補助犬" in yahoo japan, you will find many different service dog organizations. I came across a Japanese article that talked about over 300 service dog organizations.

| Barked: Wed Jun 10, '09 9:02pm PST | | | | | | Thank you for the warm welcome Barkley, Scooter, Spike and Lilith! Domo Arigato!
Forgive my ignorance, but I don't know the difference either. The ITDA does visit hospitals, hospices and schools etc., and visit elderly and children to boost their morale but we also train to walk with handicapped (people with wheelchair/cane etc) to help with their rehabilitation.
Lilith, I have not contacted Japanese Service Dog Users Association, but their figure of 44 registered service dogs seem way too low for the entire Japan. I assume they are counting only ones that were registered through them??? There are over 300 service dog organizations in Japan and they don't seem to have a central registry.
Thanks again everyone for your warm welcome. I am so happy to meet you!!!

Born to be- wild!!

| Barked: Tue Jun 9, '09 10:20pm PST | | | | | | Hello everyone! My name is Snow White, "Snowy" for short. I am a therapy dog in training. Can I share my story with you?
I am currently stationed in Camp Zama Japan, because my mom works for the US Army as a civilian. We moved here in October last year. I enjoyed showing and herding when I was living in the States, but mom hasn't found anything like that here in Japan. Then one day, Japan White Shepherd Association invited us to attend their exhibition at Pet Expo. (My mom assisted Japanese WS breeders acquire dogs from a breeder she knew in the US)
The Pet Expo was a lot of fun. I have never seen sooo many people and so many dogs in one location. (and I have been many places where lots of dogs and people gather - to include dog shows and herding trials) We met so many other dogs and I was petted by lots of people - some even asked to be photographed with me (I guess large breeds are still somewhat rare in Japan???)
Anyway, at one point, a mentally retarded young man (I'd say he was in his mid 20s) ran up to me and gave me a big hug. He approached rather fast and sudden, so my mom thought he would startle me..but he didn't.
Mom figured perhaps I picked up his innocence, or because he was so relaxed (He was like an over-grown child). In any case, I just let him hold me. After a moment, he let go of me and asked mom if I would "shake" his hand. Mom asked the man to reach his hand out, and without missing a beat, I just placed my paw on his out-stretched hand very gently, making him squeal with happiness! As he exclaimed "What a smart dog!", he gave me a kiss on my head. When he walked away, mom knew he had a very positive experience with me and made her all teary-eyed.
Anyway, mom was so moved by this experience and watching how I interacted with people, she was convinced that I had a great potential to be a therapy dog.
..... So mom contacted International Therapy Dog Association (ITDA) in Tokyo, a leading organization for animal-assisted therapy in Japan, and we started my therapy dog training. You will find some of my training pictures on my page.
I am still a beginner and I have a lot to learn. But I am looking forward to getting to know you guys and hearing your stories.

| Barked: Sun May 31, '09 5:01pm PST | | | | | | I work for the Army as a civilian and I am currently stationed in Camp Zama, Japan. Oh and my husband is a retired military police officer.
I truly doubt any police officers/MWD (military Working Dog) handlers feel dogs are their equipment. I think they treat them as partners. Many K-9 officers adapt their canine partners when they complete their service because their bonds are so strong. (I am not surprised- they rely on each other to survive )
Normally dogs that are selected for the type of job are temperament tested for solid nerves and very high-drive. They thrive to work. Yes there is a risk - but because of them so many lives are saved. And I know they make every effort to ensure their safety.
When my husband was an active duty, one of his K-9 handlers' dog got hurt apprehending a suspect. While recovering, the dog whined every morning when his handler was getting ready to go to work without him - the dog WANTED to go to work despite of his injuries.
Now we can't look inside of their heads to understand what motivates them to work diligently despite of dangers they face- but they do what they do willingly (and they seem to enjoy it).
And that's why I have a special place in my heart for this brave and loyal breed of dogs called GSD.

Snowy pooped in the middle of the parking lot at the Pet Expo. I was on the phone with the JWSA (Japan White SHepherd Association) president to let him know that we arrived. (He had an exhibitor's pass for us) I had to apologize to him and told him I'd call back because I had to scoop the poop!
