Jeffers has a nice selection of canine clothing, most of them very affordable. They also have a huge selection in terms of size - everything from stuff to fit you little guys all the way up to coats and sweaters for the larger set. Their poly ripstop coat (made like a horse blanket) is wind proof (Scooter tested) and comes in a ton of colors. I often pair it with their Weather Beta brand fleece coat when the temps take a huge nosedive.

Scooter also has a pair of their thermal PJs which covers all of his back and most of his back legs. It also fits well under his coats; he can wear his thermals around the house and then we just slide a coat over them when we are going out.

Taser said, "But with a qualified professional trainer, any dog should be able to accomplish service or therapy dog training. This is in my opinion which many on dogster do not share, but I am intitled to my opinion."

Yes, you are entitled to your opinion, but the facts don't support it when it comes to SDs. If it were true, then none of the programs would ever have a dog wash out for anything other than health reasons. That certainly isn't the case.

Blue. That was what we started with since it contrasts well with his coloring. We've stayed with it and added some yellow on his patches as that is the colors associated with assistance animals over here.

Hoover, just because the K-9s in your county are treated that way, it does not mean that all K-9s are under socialized with people or overly aggressive. I have a long history working in law enforcement. None of the county or state-owned dogs that I have worked with (and I've worked both for several small counties as well as several larger ones) have allowed their animals to be treated that way. A lot of the dogs I've been around have nearly as much public access training as a lot of SDs as they go everywhere except the grocery store and restaurants.

As Mulder has pointed out, most patrol K-9s are very limited in their physical contact with other dogs. Obviously, playing with other animals is out while they are working and most agencies feel they have too much money invested to take the chance on them getting hurt. Every agency I've worked for has had policies where the labs (detector dogs) were allowed to get together for supervised play with each handler being present. All of the detector labs I've been around have been big mushes.

That said, we have had K-9s lunge at us while exiting the security section at several airports; some have been county owned while we have also encountered aggressive State and government owed animals depending on who they have working at any given time. I generally take a good look around while I am putting my shoes back on and repacking my bag (laptop,ect) so that I can locate any potential problem areas.

At BWI, the security area opens back up to the terminal hallway at an angle. A K-9 unit is generally sitting where the left hand wall meets the terminal behind a desked off section; a corner that many people try to cut (and generally get quite a scare).

I think it may be a combo of the fear period AND the quirky "teenage angst" phase that starts hitting between 9 and 12 months.

You need to decide which therapy organization you want to work with; something strictly local or go with one of the national organizations. Since you know you'd like to volunteer at a specific location/institution, you might contact them to see which organization visits.

The major national organizations are:

The Delta Society

Therapy Dogs International

Therapy Dogs Inc.

You'll want to read the info closely. One of them does not allow you to be a member of any other therapy organizations while registered with them. The sites also give you info on their required testing.

Scooter is a kisser and a hugger. My ex use to get grossed out when Scooter would give me kisses, so I taught him to "make out" - give me kisses until I tell him to stop. That really grossed the ex out. Scooter also knows names for human facial parts (nose, cheek, chin, ect).

He also likes to rub his head along my chin and neck in an almost kitty like way then sorta roll over so he can get a belly rub at the same time.

As others have pointed out, Mutt Muffs work. While they are not adequate for a lot of concert situations, they are perfect for going to the movies, ballet, theater, certain sporting events, various military events (from formal to casual), ect. Scooter figured it out really quickly and now if he finds something too noisy will let me know he wants them.

The family situation is pretty common. I'm one of those that says "we are a team. Period." and Hubby feels the same way. If someone were to say they didn't want Scooter around, then more than likely, I wouldn't go. If for some reason, I (or Hubby) really, really wanted to see the person, we'd stay in a hotel. That guarantees I have a place where I can crank up the AC, have some relative silence, and be in the dark when I get sick.

Fair Housing Act

I'm looking at:
Sec. 803. [42 U.S.C. 3603] Effective dates of certain prohibitions

(a) Subject to the provisions of subsection (b) of this section and section 807 of this title, the prohibitions against discrimination in the sale or rental of housing set forth in section 804 of this title shall apply:
(1) Upon enactment of this subchapter, to--

(A) dwellings owned or operated by the Federal Government;

(B) dwellings provided in whole or in part with the aid of loans, advances, grants, or contributions made by the Federal Government, under agreements entered into after November 20, 1962, unless payment due thereon has been made in full prior to April 11, 1968;

(C) dwellings provided in whole or in part by loans insured, guaranteed, or otherwise secured by the credit of the Federal Government, under agreements entered into after November 20, 1962, unless payment thereon has been made in full prior to April 11, 1968: Provided, That nothing contained in subparagraphs (B) and (C) of this subsection shall be applicable to dwellings solely by virtue of the fact that they are subject to mortgages held by an FDIC or FSLIC institution; and

(D) dwellings provided by the development or the redevelopment of real property purchased, rented, or otherwise obtained from a State or local public agency receiving Federal financial assistance for slum clearance or urban renewal with respect to such real property under loan or grant contracts entered into after November 20, 1962.

(2) After December 31, 1968, to all dwellings covered by paragraph (1) and to all other dwellings except as exempted by subsection (b) of this section.

(b)Nothing in section 804 of this title (other than subsection (c)) shall apply to--

(1) any single-family house sold or rented by an owner: Provided, That such private individual owner does not own more than three such single-family houses at any one time: Provided further, That in the case of the sale of any such single-family house by a private individual owner not residing in such house at the time of such sale or who was not the most recent resident of such house prior to such sale, the exemption granted by this subsection shall apply only with respect to one such sale within any twenty-four month period: Provided further, That such bona fide private individual owner does not own any interest in, nor is there owned or reserved on his behalf, under any express or voluntary agreement, title to or any right to all or a portion of the proceeds from the sale or rental of, more than three such single-family houses at any one time: Provided further, That after December 31, 1969, the sale or rental of any such single-family house shall be excepted from the application of this subchapter only if such house is sold or rented (A) without the use in any manner of the sales or rental facilities or the sales or rental services of any real estate broker, agent, or salesman, or of such facilities or services of any person in the business of selling or renting dwellings, or of any employee or agent of any such broker, agent, salesman, or person
and (B) without the publication, posting or mailing, after notice, of any advertisement or written notice in violation of section 804(c) of this title; but nothing in this proviso shall prohibit the use of attorneys, escrow agents, abstractors, title companies, and other such professional assistance as necessary to perfect or transfer the title, or

(2)rooms or units in dwellings containing living quarters occupied or intended to be occupied by no more than four families living independently of each other, if the owner actually maintains and occupies one of such living quarters as his residence.

(c)For the purposes of subsection (b) of this section, a person shall be deemed to be in the business of selling or renting dwellings if--

(1) he has, within the preceding twelve months, participated as principal in three or more transactions involving the sale or rental of any dwelling or any interest therein, or

(2) he has, within the preceding twelve months, participated as agent, other than in the sale of his own personal residence in providing sales or rental facilities or sales or rental services in two or more transactions involving the sale or rental of any dwelling or any interest therein, or

(3) he is the owner of any dwelling designed or intended for occupancy by, or occupied by, five or more families.
