I didn't do it! |
| Barked: Sat Oct 31, '09 10:23am PST | | | | | | Thanks for all of the responses! I enjoyed reading them all.
Yeah, that's what I thought about that breeder. I know better I guess, it's just that...you know the idea of having the sibling of my best friend's dog is tempting ^-^
I've spent a lot of time going to agility events, and so far I've really liked the rat terriers and the shelties. I also looove dobies and ridgebacks but I don't feel like I can control a dog of that size right now.
I should've been more specific about border collies, I have seen them in action and I work with a lot of them at the shelter I volunteer for. They are beautiful, intelligent, loving dogs that are absoulutely amazing, and I do love them. My friend has one that I often babysit, and although I love that dog, the level of intelligence and energy in a dog of her size seems almost intimidating.
That's why I'm looking for a smaller-sized breed (but not too small). Although a BC would be a great agility dog, this will also be my first puppy as well as my first agility dog. I know how to raise pups as I've helped neighbors and friends with theirs, I'm just a little scared as to the actual raising of the pup all by myself. I think a BC would have too much energy for me. But I agree, shelties are a lot like BCs in that sense.
As much as I love the sheltie breed, I'm trying to decide if they'll be a good choice for me. Everyone keeps telling me to get one, but I kind of want a rat terrier more to be honest. I've always been fond of the JRT type breed, and I keep finding myself attracted the rat terrier breed. And when I said they are less expensive, I meant in the actual obtaining of the puppy.
I am spending a lot of research time on these two breeds, and I'm having trouble creating space on my bookshelf for all the books I've gotten...all those dobie and ridgeback books take up a lot of shelfspace xD.
I will look into the Papillon breed, I've been fond of that breed I'm just not sure on the size... I like the (standard) RT and the sheltie for that medium-small size. I'm afraid a papillon might be too small, but I'm always open to suggestions and I will learn more about the breed for sure!
Thanks again! Please, any more advice and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated! ^-^
*EDIT: I forgot to add my idea on getting a pug....to be totally honest, they're not really my favorite breed...(sorry pug lovers!)...and I wouldn't want to risk a short-faced dog in the Idaho heat. And also, most of the events held where I live, have been AKC. And I understand that mixed breeds and shelter dogs often make good agility dogs...but I want to get a purebred this time. The idea of getting a dog of my favorite breed is exciting, especially knowing that I'll probably have the same breed again in the future because of this.

I didn't do it! |
| Barked: Thu Oct 29, '09 8:49pm PST | | | | | | Well this spring or summer, I've decided to get a puppy for agility. A lot of thought is being put into this... I really want to raise a puppy, I've never done it before. Like I said, Iive been thinking a lot about this, and I'm trying to decide which breed I should choose.
-American Rat Terrier
...because they are not that expensive, I like their temperment, good size (standard), going to be fun to train, easy grooming...
-Sheltie
...because I've always wanted one, they've been in our family for a long time (just not my lifetime...yet), will be fun to train, good size...
...those are my two main choices. I know that border collies are also really good agility dogs, but I don't really want a dog that size and energy...I'd rather have a dog that will be good for a beginner like me . I've never done agility before . I've always wanted to do agility, but I can't do it with any of my current dogs due to medical issues or behavior problems.
So any breed suggestions would be awesome, and also any advice on rat terriers and shelties would be great too....
AND...my friend wants me to get a sheltie from the same breeder that he got his from...http://sheltiesmiles.piczo.com/?g=1&cr=2

You truly are- one frightening- monster. |
| Barked: Sun Mar 22, '09 9:49pm PST | | | | | | Okay, so I have this lifelong dream to one day own a Dobie and/or a Great Dane. An Alaskan Klee Kai would be great too. I've done a lot of research on Danes and AKK's, but not much on Dobies. I'd love to hear some personal experiences with them if there are any out there!
I met my first Dobie when I was really little. My friend had a Dobie named Tragen. He was a big black and tan boy and was the sweetest dog ever. He looked tough and scary, but he would carry pink fluffy "babies" around and crawl in your lap. He didn't like strangers and other dogs, and he was generally just a out of control dog that my friend and I could never walk. Tragen never had a problem with me, I was an exception .
I loved Tragen a lot, but his story ends badly. Tragen used to live on a large property with fields, horses, a job to do, and lots of things to sniff. Then they moved into a huge house with no backyard next to a golf course. He was cooped up a lot because he wasn't allowed on the carpet, so that meant he had to stay on the tile downstairs. That was when his behavior got really bad. He ended up biting a girl when she turned to whisper a "secret" in his ear. I remember the email my friend sent me and I started to cry. Her dad took Tragen to the vet, and he thought he was going for a car ride to the river. The girl got stitches above her eyebrow and behind her ear.
So, kind of ironic right? Why would I want a Dobie after this tragic incident? Well, I loved Puppy, and he was the most beautiful, smart dog I've ever met. The family got another Dobie pup after their other dog died (Major, their other dog, died in his sleep the same month Tragen died....saddest month of my life, not to mention the family's), and little Siggy is just fine, behavioral wise.
I really like the breed. I once fell in love with an 8 year old Dobie at my shelter. Prettiest dog I've ever seen...Bridget was albino, and had the brightest blue eyes I've ever seen. She was so sweet....(I spent the day with her in the lobby and she got adopted..phooey. I was crossing my fingers she wouldn't so I could take her home! )
Anyways. I'm starting to ramble. I'd love to hear some more about Dobies.

You truly are- one frightening- monster. |
| Barked: Mon Mar 2, '09 7:00pm PST | | | | | | I once had someone mistake me for a pitbull...
I was walking through a little town getting ice cream with my person, and there was a mom and her little kids. The little kids wanted to pet me, but their mom said: "No, that's a pit bull!" and then pulled them away.
All I wanted was to be scratched. I was wagging my tail and everything! (I thought for sure my heart would be broken, but my person gave me a treat).
