It's all well and good saying the dog is aggressive through fear but then what if you're dog isn't actually fear aggressive? and the methods you're using are kind of encouraging the aggressive behaviour in a dominant dog? thinking

And to be honest, i've heard of very few people who label all aggressive dogs as "dominant". The trainer who thinks Missy is dominant has also said that she's a great little dog for a Terrier but that most Terriers have a dominant nature but has never ever told me to use "dominant" menthods over her. Where as funnily enough her behaviourist who said she is fear aggressive has said i have to be more dominant with her! Do they even know themselves?!

Another thing i thought of last night was breed predisposition. If you mull over dog breed information certain breeds are described as being "dominant" or "can have dominance issues with other dogs". I know it's all about nurture vs nature but honestly i do believe that some breeds are more predisposed to being more of a challenge. Terriers were bred to be fearless, which may very well explain why Missy isn't fearful when trying to get to other dogs or animals.

Tyler on the other hand you could never describe as a dominant type, he's a typical sight hound in most respects and they are just not pushy or dominant dogs.

Ok, so today Missy & Tyler were running around the field chasing after one another ( well actually Missy was trying to grab the stick from Ty ) laugh out loud I looked around and saw a dog on the lead fastly approaching us. I panicked for a spilt second, hoping and preying Missy wouldn't notice. Ty didn't notice and of his own accord he returned to me where i put him on the lead. Missy was still running around but heading in my direction. The guy with the dog was just starting to say about Missy and her stick and she noticed them!!! She went flat to the ground, ears slicked back on her head, intense eye gaze. I shouted over to the man that she didn't like other dogs and could he stand there for a minute, he looked a little shocked but stopped immediately. His dog is a very friendly puppy but Missy would attack it without a doubt! They were about 20 feet away from us and Missy was half way between them and me, i called her really excitedly and grabbed her stick and she RETURNED! big grin

This means alot to me, she could have easily chose to go ahead and run for the puppy but she chose to respond to me. I popped her on the lead and she didn't bark as they passed by either.

Just thought i'd share with you all another big achievement.

Dennis, i'm very torn between the Vizsla and Weimaraner! I think i'm leaning towards the Weim but the breeders i have picked out do breed Vizslas to and i find it hard to resist their stunning looks.

Why can't you still take her out? I walk in torrential rain, snow, and high winds because it's for my dogs benefit. I simply get a waterproof coat & wellies and deal with it.

I'm just so confused laugh out loud The more i read the more i second guess Missy's behaviour.

Where Posh said about dogs usually attacking face to face, this is what Missy does and it's scary!

I can understand where Laila is coming from but one instance i'll give you is when Missy was a 10 week old puppy and she cornered a fellow puppy in her training classes and would not let it move! Everytime it went to move, Missy would pin it down on the floor. At the time i thought this was normal puppy behaviour, that is until i got Tyler and noticed the difference in his normal puppy play style. Missy used to only want to play with the Akitas and Rottweilers at the training class and little dogs she would bully. She had to have many time outs.

I've heard before that a truly dominant dog never feels the need to attack as they are so self assured of their own status.

Maybe Missy is more a Bully then a truly dominant dog thinking

That's what i was saying...when no fear is involved how can it be fear aggression? Unless of course the dog is very adapt at covering it's fear.

You know, another site i'm on was talking about dog attacks after the recent story of the guide dog that was attacked here. The dog charged this defenceless Lab without hesitation and ploughed into it, dragging it around like a rag doll. The responses raised were that this wasn't "normal" behaviour from a dog, that this dog meant to cause serious harm. That's where the difference lies, a dog that seems to attack through fear but is really bluffing and a dog that attacks because it WANTS to cause injury.
