Michael James Keenan, 44, passed away June 18, 2007 from complications. He has been severely burned while saving a little jack russel terrier named Bobby. Michael was a hero twice over.
SAN FRANCISCO — A Maine-born artist who once rescued a drowning woman died from injuries he sustained four months ago while saving a friend's dog from a burning house.
Michael James Keenan, 44, died Monday of complications from burns at St. Francis Memorial Hospital. He sustained burns over 80 percent of his body in February when he rescued a Jack Russell terrier from a Russian Hill home.
"He was the kind of guy who would walk into any pub and walk out with 15 friends," said Owen Kelly, a childhood friend.

Sun City Vet Accused of Animal Cruelty
June 11th, 2007 @ 9:12pm
by KPHO.com; Associated Press
A longtime Sun City West veterinarian faces animal cruelty and theft charges stemming from two incidents involving two different dogs, Maricopa County sheriff's deputies said on Monday.
Employees at a Sun City West Animal Hospital told Maricopa County Sheriff's Office animal cruelty unit investigators that Dr. Joshua Winston hit a 5-pound Chihuahua, named Bella, in the head three to five times with an open and closed fist, dislodging the dog's eye, deputies said. The dog required surgery to correct the injury.
"The eye was put back in and stitched," said Deputy Charles Scudella. "It's a wait-and-see if the dog still gets use of the eye."
Sheriff's deputies said the incident happened in the clinic on June 4 and was witnessed by two vet technicians employed there.
Statements made by the vet techs indicate the doctor became frustrated because the Chihuahua, there for spay surgery, was uncooperative and aggressive, deputies said.
"Vets are to animals like teachers are to children," said Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. "According to the employees who work at this animal hospital, this doctor crossed the line. My policy dictates that people who abuse animals, regardless of their position, go directly to jail."
The second incident allegedly occurred earlier this year and involved a Neapolitan Mastiff brought in for vaccinations.
Witnesses said the dog was uncooperative, according to deputies. They said Winston became angered, and he dispensed the medication in the sink rather than into the dog and charged the client $80 for the medication, deputies said.
A call to the animal hospital was not immediately returned Monday.

http://www.nbc11.com/news/13437124/detail.html
The dog formerly owned by a beloved homeless man who lived on the streets of San Jose is about to get a new home.
Boo Boo became homeless himself in April when Cornelius Van Der Vies died of an apparent heart attack after defending the dog from another homeless man, who was throwing rocks at the animal.

After Van Der Vies died, Boo Boo first went to an animal shelter. Then he was adopted by an animal rescue group who spent the past few weeks training him to get along with people and dogs.
Sunday was Boo Boo's final test.
He participated in the annual "Walk Your Tail Off For Homeless Pets" fundraiser in Los Gatos.
His trainers needed to see how Boo Boo interacted during the event.
Boo Boo's trainer said he passed with flying colors.

His trainers needed to see how Boo Boo interacted during the event.
Boo Boo's trainer said he passed with flying colors.
"He's been going up to people, making friends, taking treats, saying hello and he's very polite with the other dogs and I was just amazed because sometimes cattle dogs can be a little scrappy and he's like 'How are you? How are you?' Sniffing noses and sniffing bottoms just very normal dog behavior," Dawna Coldwell said.
Van Der Vies was a fixture in downtown San Jose. People said he was always there with a smile and a comment that put them in a good mood.
Hundreds attended his funeral, which was held at the St. Joseph's Cathedral.
Many in the South Bay community have been following the story of Boo Boo, hoping that he would in the end find a home.
There are dozens of people who have volunteered to adopt the dog.
Now that he has passed the socialization test, all that is left is a trip to the dentist for some work on his teeth.
His handlers said Boo Boo should be in a new home within a week.
Boo Boo, Van Der Vies Go Online
Boo Boo and Van Der Vies are part of a new feature on Google Maps.
On May 25, Google launched a new feature called Street View, which allows users to view and navigate 360-degree, street-level photos.
The feature is available only for Denver, Las Vegas, New York, the San Francisco Bay Area, and parts of Florida.
The images used for Street View were compiled over months. During that time, Van Der Vies was caught on camera.
The image (upper right) shows Van Der Vies exactly how so many San Jose residents remember him -- sitting alongside his dog with a smile on his face.

| Barked: Sun May 27, '07 1:44pm PST | | | | | | I love Dogster because everyone is so nice here...they have one big thing in common of course...love of dogs...theirs and others. I found a website for Endal - he is a famous dog. He is a service dog but goes above and beyond. He in fact, has already saved his owner's life once already. His owner's name is Allen and his love of Endal is endless. Allen is a war veteran. Endal is now 10+ years. I asked Allen via email to join Dogster today...they live in England and he did. Promised many rosettes and bones and stars so every one please give Allen and Endal ID # 549358 a huge welcome and for we Americans how appropriate on Memorial Day weekend to also welcome Allen. | | | | |
