Behavior & Training > Do you walk your dog(s) after dark?

Yes I do, during summer it's way too hot before sunset for a Husky. The hottest it has gotten was only 33 degrees Celsius (about 90 F) but we often have nearly 100% humidity, which makes it feel WAY hotter. Even I was feeling sick from the heat last summer during the week it got to 33.

Our neighbourhood is military housing, so relatively safe. If I go alone then I wear one of them "dorklights" (great name for them BTW!) as our street lightings is beyond a joke) or carry a torch. I make sure I have my cell with me. Mace is illegal here, as is carrying guns. I wouldn't have one even it wasn't.

Dog Health > How far away is your vet?
Jesse

Jesse - Trouble with a- capital J

Ours is about 5 mins walk, 1 or 2 mins by car. One of the vets has malamutes, so he understands what I (as a Husky) am like. When I had a neck infection he didn't shave me since he knows that shaving a husky is bad, whereas most vets would have shaved first, asked questions 2nd. Of course if I had *needed* to be shaved then they would have, but it wasn't necessary.
They are also good with rabbits, which is good since I have 2 rabbit brothers.
Dad's sister is also a vet, but she lives about 8 hours drive away. They usually ring her for advice, then if we need to be seen they take us to the one here. 2 months ago, one of the rabbits was sick, wouldn't eat. My aunty was coming up to stay, so when she got here she looked at him and decided he had an infection somewhere. She went to our vets to ask if they would sell her antibiotics over the counter, since she was a vet herself. Turns out one of the vets did a practicum at her clinic and knew her, so that was no problem! Yay for saving on consult fees dancing

Dog Health > How early do you get up for walks!

Jesse

BOL When Mummy and Daddy first rescued me, they got up at 6am most mornings for a walk. It was winter, and that got old REALLY fast, when they had to dig out the thermal underwear big laugh I live outside during the day (fully fenced yard with a kennel and run, and we don't get really extreme temperatures here) so I don't need to potty before they leave. Most nights I hold it til they get up, usually around 7, otherwise they will open the back door, let me out, and then go back to bed. Some mornings mum has to drag MY butt out of bed, rather than the other way around.
When Daddy was away for 8 months, Mum usually walked me around 9pm, as it was cooler over summer, but not too dark

Dog Health > Dogs in the snow = cruelty?

I'd kill for snow! As a Husky, I'm bred to be in it, but in our city (Auckland, New Zealand) it has only snowed twice in recorded history (which is, ok, only maybe 200 years BOL). Anyway, I FINALLY got to play in snow this winter when we went on a road trip. There are pics on my page.

Dog Health > How much money would you spend to save your pet from cancer?

I am in the minority in that I am not offended by this question. I have to be practical. If Jesse got majorly sick right now, we could max out the loan we have taken from my parents and are paying back. We have no house to sell, and most of our stuff is second hand, or wouldn't get much on sale. We have 3 vehicles we could sell, but then we would struggle to get her to the vets for the treatment.

I don't have a dollar amount, but it would depend on the circumstances at the time. Yes, she is a family member, but there is no point in bankrupting ourselves or making us all homeless, as then we still couldn't provide for her. We could live with my parents, but she wouldn't be allowed inside as they have cats, so she couldn't be kept still after major surgary, or be isolated after chemo or whatever. I think you have to have limitations and take into account consequences. IF i sell my house to pay for care for my dog, then how will I care for her?

My aunt had to make this decision for her parents cat. My grandparents died many year ago and my aunt took in their cat. A year ago he was hit by a car and needed major surgary to fix his jaw. At 18 years old we all decided that he was too old to benfit from the thousands it would have costed. Yes, the had the money there, but it was earmarked for other things, and practically, it isn't wprth spending that money for a cat that was likely to die form old age if nothing else, in the very near future

BOL yeah total Husky thing! We are trying to crate train Jesse. One night we put her in their while we watched TV - crate in the same room. She wooed and whined for a bit, and we deliberately ignored her. So eventually she turned her back on us and lay down, and it was our turn to be ignored!

Dog Health > tap water vs bottled or RO tank water.

Jesse

Jesse gets tap water. It's generally pretty good quality here. We humans drink filtered water because I don't like the chlorine taste, but Jesse doesn't seem to mind it lol. Besides our filter couldn't keep up with her (it's a bench top one you have to add water too, then it filters it). The only time she gets bottle water is if we are out on a walk and I have forgotten to bring a bottle of tap water, I will buy a bottle for her if it is a long walk or hot.

Dogs & Travel > Bringing a dog to the USA, quarentine?

Jesse

I have no idea on requirement going to the USA but I know about coming back. Because Australia is Rabies free (like us here in NZ), but the USA is not, you will have to quarantine your dog for 6 months on return. Is that fair on the dog for a trip of a few weeks?????

Siberian Husky > Sneaky, sneaky, sneaky...

Sounds a lot like Jesse, anytime there are tissues around she sneaks them out of the bin or the floor or wherever and collects them under the bed or behind the couch, she either shreds them or chews them into little tissue blobs. Even the Aluminium bin with a lid isn't safe, she's worked out how to open that. Likewise if Jesse is inside and all goes quiet there is usually some mischief going on, although she sometimes just takes herself off to the spare bed for a sleep.
