Let's Wrestle! |
| Barked: Sun Jun 22, '08 8:59pm PST | | | | | | Harry is the most affectionate dog anyone could ever ask for. Why his former owners left him on a tie out all day and all night I'll never know. My uncle in law rescued him and now we are trying to find him a forever loving home or a rescue or foster. He is about 2 years old, needs to be fixed and up to date on shots. Because he's spent his whole life outside he doesn't have house manners but he is really smart and I'm sure will learn them in no time. Just needs someone who is patient and willing to teach him the ropes. | | | | |

Water Water- Water!!!!!!!!!! |
| Barked: Sun Jun 8, '08 5:03pm PST | | | | | | Hello. My name is Christine. I am a dog owner and advocate for those needing homes. I am writing this email for a friend. He has 2 labs that he decided he does not want anymore. I told him to contact me first before bringing them to the shelter so he did. I am also helping with food for the dogs in exchange for them spending more time at his house til I can find a place for them. There names are Notre and Quincy. They are two black lab mixes. Both un neutered. They also need flea & tick preventative and heartworm test & meds. They are surprisingly in decent health for not having any of these basics. Anyway I know most rescues are full or rely mainly on foster homes. So I am was writing because I wanted to use this as a way to get the word out that they are adoptable. Notre is around 3 yrs old. Mixed brindled lab. Shy at first but LOVES to play fetch. His younger sibling Quincy is just a lover. He thinks hes a lap dog. Notre is around 95 lbs and Quincy is around 50lbs. They have a high prey instinct and chase and catch squirrels on the property they live on so it would be best if they found a home without small animals or cats. They seem to do just fine with other dogs. They do not like water as I have tried to go over and give them a bath and they run when they hear the faucet turn on. They roam right now but always come back to the house. The owner has tried to fence them in the backyard. The chain link fence is only about 5 feet high and they can both jump it with ease. They have never been inside dogs but I'm sure would adapt pretty quickly. I also went over to this persons home when my friend moved in with him to clean up the front yard. Like most labs they get into things if left out. They had been using the trash and what they could find as toys. So I went and got them proper chew bones, cleaned out there sleeping quarters, and got them a few toys. Like I said they need to be fixed and have their shots but I can't afford to do it myself right now. I'm in between jobs. I think this would definitely make them
more adoptable. They seem to be very attached to each other so I would hate to separate them but I'm sure if we had to they would be fine. Notre doesn't always know his size so I wouldn't place him with small children. But Quincy is quieter, and calmer and I think he would be great with kids. Again they have a place to live right now but I'm not sure how much longer that situation will last. Any help is appreciated. I am also posting flyer's at local vets, am a part of several yahoo groups concerning rescues and spreading by word of mouth. These dogs, as all do, deserve a great home with love, and attention. I have gotten very attached to them and thats why I'm working so hard to find them a loving home or foster. Please get back to me if you can help in any way. I am willing to help relocate if need be. Thanks....Below is the link for the pictures I have uploaded on photobucket. The guys didn't want to sit still too long for me to take some good shots and all I have is a camera phone.

Water Water- Water!!!!!!!!!! |
| Barked: Sun Jun 8, '08 9:57am PST | | | | | | Hello. I am posting this ad to help a friend who has decided he no longer wants his dogs. They are two male black lab mixes. Notre is the top picture. He is strong, and sweet. Needs to be taught how to play gently, so I wouldn't recommend him to a home with small children. He weights about 95 lbs. Quincy is a lover. He is about 50lbs and just wants attention. He would be ok in a home with small kids. Although I would prefer not to split them up since they have been together their whole lives. They are not fixed, need their shots and flea /tick, and heart worm preventative. Their owner never gave them any of this. Another reason they would greatly benefit from a new home. They also jump fences. Their owner tried to keep them in his back yard but with no luck so they are used to roaming around near the house they live. Although they always come back. They both also need to be in a home with no small animals or cats as they LOVE to chase and kill squirrels , as most labs do! If you can help please email me. There is a small rehoming fee and a home visit and follow up visits are required before adoption. Thanks.
Christine

| Barked: Thu Jun 5, '08 4:04pm PST | | | | | | Hello. This is Athens mommy. I am trying to find homes for two wonderful dogs. There names are Notre and Quincy. They are black lab mixes. Notre is about 95 lbs and Quincy is about 45lbs. They are not fixed nor have they had any of their shots. They seem in good health despite all of this. Their owner works all the time. They stay outside 24/7. When my friend moved in with this guy I was over there cleaning up the yard from all the things they had chewed up from the trash sitting around. I also got them toys and bones which they loved. They just want attention and def. don't get it where they are at now. Recently the in door cat who also belongs to the dogs owner managed to get outside. Although in past times Notre and Quincy have left him alone something was different this time and they managed to kill the cat. This was not done out of aggression but just being more or less "wild" dogs. This meaning that they were not fed on a regular basis, given love, or proper medical attention or training that most dog owners on Dogster would do for their pups. Anyway I have managed to get the owner to give me some more time to find a place for them. But i'm not sure how much that time is. I have been contacting local rescue groups but with no luck. I don't want them to go to the shelter cause 1. they will get split up and they are very bonded to each other. and 2. because shelter dogs change their personalities due to the stressful conditions and these guys are so sweet I don't want to risk them getting aggressive cause they are caged up. When they are not used to it. They also have a negative to being in a shelter as most ppl pass up black dogs cause they are scarier since its harder to see their face. So I'm looking for anyone who can help in anyway. I know there have been ppl before that have helped cross country find dogs a place to be so thats what I'm looking for now. Please email if you can help or have advice. | | | | |

| Barked: Sat Mar 8, '08 9:44pm PST | | | | | | I know that must be scary. I've seen that at the dog park. Part of it is owner responsibility. I'm not talking about you I'm talking about the other guy. If this dog was small, was there not a small dog area? Our dog park as two sections, sm dog and lg dog. Although ppl do bring sm dogs into the lg dog area. It sounds clearly to me like the sm. dog was giving off a signal to your dog that made him react. Dogs do that. Mine have even gotten into a few times. It happenes in an instant, but the way to look for it subtlety is they use eye contact. But like I said even if the other dog was smaller, it probably instigated it, even if it was not by physical interaction. Again dogs communicate much differently than people. I would recommend a dog behaviorist for starters. Yes socialization is important, but with Cesar Milan he even says the reason he rehabilitates dogs at his place is because ALL of his dogs are calm. If you bring him to a dog park where the dogs are not in that state of mind (and a public park I wouldn't expect them to be) then that is why the "socialization" sometimes has scary endings. Its not YOUR dog being aggressive. Its your dog reacting to ANOTHER DOG sending out the wrong signals. It is actually a natural reaction if YOUR dog felt threatened in anyway that he go after the other dog, but not because you dog is aggressive, but he is reacting to his instincts. I hope some of this helps. | | | | |

I just think there is always another option. If you don't' have the money there are organizations out there that will take the dog for you, like her friend who took Jake, and work with them so thats what you do if you don't have the money.

Stop BSL |
| Barked: Sat Mar 8, '08 9:18pm PST | | | | | | I know this is a bit late but I want to address Summers story. Bringing a problematic dog back to a shelter is NEVER a good idea. I know you say maybe someone else will give him a chance. But that won't happen. What will happen is either the aggression will get worse from being BACk in the shelter again (Which is not an environment to calm any dog down) and if he is lucky enough to get adopted and the next people are like Summers parents and are not willing to do anything to help him then THEY might put him down anyway! So how are you helping the situation? Part of the reason so many dogs have problems is because they are tossed around, many in and out of adopted homes because no one wants to take the time to work with them. How do you figure a dog is going to learn anything if you don't take the time to teach them. If your kid comes out with behavioral problems, do you put the kid up for adoption? NO you don't! So why do that to a dog! They have already had a tough life and are not EVER going to learn anything unless they are tought. So right now that dog only knows that when he bites he gets put back at the shelter! This is why so many problematic dogs are put to sleep because ALOT of people don't want to spend the time to help them or find someone else who will. A rescue organization would have been MUCH better. They could have helped with rehabilitating his aggression issues and socialization with people and other dogs! Giving up is never the answer and it makes me so furious when that is what people do. They get dogs then when they learn they are going to take work, being its a puppy who is learning to be house trained, or a dog that barks because it spends all day outside tie to a 4 ft leash on a dog house (duh of course they are going to bark!) or a dog that was abused, somehow made it to a shelter, adopted then sent back to the place they came. You might have well put him down. At least he wouldn't be tossed around anymore! I wish there were more people out there that would dedicate the time and effort to help rehabilitate these dogs instead of giving up so soon!
PS: Just to all those other dog owners who say You have to be there, No you don't. If you learn and are around dogs enough then you learn you DON'T give up on them! It's just wrong! If you can't teach them give them a chance to be taught by someone else and returning to a shelter is not the answer. I learned my lesson thats why Im passing it along to others.
One more story then I'm done ranting. My ex husband and I got three dogs while we were together. When he left me he took Lexi. She was the dominant between the three. Well after a year I took her back due to circumstances that he couldn't keep her anymore to find her a new home. It had been so long since she was with my other 2 dogs Athens had become the dominant female. Lexi was challenging this. They got into several fights, even wound up accidentally nipping my arm one day. Long story short, I brought her back to the shelter I got her from in TEARS! With help from my dad and a rescue worker, I got her back. When My dad called the shelter he did just in time because she of course got scared cause she was in a situation unfamiliar to her. She did just what I knew she would do. She didn't like black men, and of course shelter workers with gloves scared her too i imagine. She growled and so they had put her in isolation to be put down. When I went to pick her up the shelter worker had ME go back to get her because she was growling at the lady. Of course the minute she saw me she was all licks and loving, tail wagging. I found a terrific man who found her a fabulous new loving home. She is a great dog, just needed to be the only one in a family. The whole thing broke my heart and still today makes me sad. But I know now why you don't bring dogs back to shelters, because if they already have problems bringing them back will just make them worse!
