This thread brought up some pretty horrible feelings, but maybe my experience will encourage others to please please please listen to your gut. I made the mistake of listening to other people and not my own feelings, and Precious died from a ruptured speenic tumor because of my lack of fast enough actions, and I will never forgive myself. I know she died within six hours of showing any signs of discomfort at all, but still. I should have reacted faster and given her a chance.

So please, don't wait if your gut is telling you there is something wrong. Nobody deserves to feel the guilt I've lived with the past year.

Dog Health > Advice on a dog with spleen tumors

We're almost certain this is what Precious died from. A spleen tumor rupture. She had a senior wellness workup that showed some of her blood levels were off. The next week they did an ultrasound while she was under for a dental, and found a large mass in her abdomen. They wanted me to take her home and let her recover from anesthesia before we did exploratory surgery the next week, but she died the next day within 5 hours of showing any illness or discomfort.

Looking back on the that dreadful day the signs were clear. She wasn't just tired and uncomfortable from the anesthesia the day before or the antibiotics she came home on. She was bleeding internally and I didn't recognize the signs. It still pains me to think about how I didn't act in time.

I would give this sweet dog a chance to live out the rest of his life. If he vomits or shows any signs of abdominal discomfort while laying down - get him to the vet. I wish you luck, and bless you for caring for him in his final years.
