In some states, it's actually illegal to have your dog outside without their license on them.

If nothing else, I wouldn't recommend it. I think it's pretty important to have ID on your dog at all times. Just in case!!

Behavior & Training > what do you consider an Human Aggressive dog?

I agree with Shayne. . .and to an extent with Tia.

I also don't want random people in the public approaching and trying to greet my dog. Risa is afraid of people and whenever someone does that, they scare her and make it that much more difficult for her to accept people in the future. No one has the right to pet my dog. Period. It's up to me whether or not I want Risa to interact with someone. And due to people in the past NOT LISTENING to my instructions on how to properly greet her, I am super picky about who can touch her. We do not need any more setbacks. wink People are more than welcome to talk to her and look at her, though. big grin

As for the topic at hand, I think a HA dog is a dog who actively goes after a person with intent to harm without provocation.

Ris doesn't get any of those things. I would consider bully sticks but have heard they give some dogs diarrhea. And she has enough GI issues. I'd like to give her a deer antler but I can't find a free source. They're expensive to buy!

German Shepherd > Does your dog like to be petted on the head?

Risa will let people she's familiar with pet her on top of her head. But it's not her favorite spot. If a stranger tries to pet her over the head, she will shy away. It really makes her uncomfortable. So, if I let someone new pet her, I often tell them to pet her under the chin because it does't scare her. smile

I'm not in the southeast, but I do canine freestyle. The nice thing about it is that if you don't have competitions nearby, the main two groups do video competitions 4 times a year!! WCFO Freestyle and MDSA Freestyle.

I can also relate. Except Ris is my first dog. . .and not exactly the ideal first dog, that's for sure!

However, she has probably taught me more than I have taught her. I wanted a dog who I could take places and do things with. Though I knew she was shy and fearful from the beginning, I was in over my head. It was not going to be an 'easy fix' and it was hard for me to realize that at first. Once I finally got my head on straight and really started listening to the dog on the other end of the leash, things got better. I learned that I didn't know anything about dog training, even though I thought I did. I also learned to step back and LISTEN to Risa and to control my frustration better.

While I'm not certain she will ever be a dog I can take everywhere and do anything with, I am willing to accept that. She may always be fearful and never really enjoy meeting people and dogs. But that's okay. I'm willing to work around that so that she can still get out and have fun. big grin

I don't know what I would do/would have done without her.
