 Bichon's Rule !- ! !
 |
| Barked: Thu Aug 27, '09 8:40pm PST | | | | | | Two things about potty training Bichons: They DON"T bark at the door. A bell hung on the door knob is a good training method. There are bells just for that purpose, but we just used a Christmas bell necklace. Bichons have a smaller bladder that many dogs and should not be expected to hold longer than about 4 hours. It is recommended that working families find another breed. Silly I know.
I am very regimented when I train--Crate, then outside, then play for a short time with someone. then outside or feed and outside. NEVER leave an untrained animal alone not even a minute. Put outside so many times they think you have a swinging door, literally. I used the word potty or outside. When out I continually said go pee or poo. Gradually they will learn which words mean what. Also do not play outside when going out to do business, even if you just come in the door and go out to another location. When they go, bring out the band. Clap, yell, kiss, sing--whatever works for you. Puppy will love you for it.
Take crate to the bedroom with you at night and to the kitchen or living room. Have the puppy with you, but in the crate unless you are watching as above. Only one room at a time for trust. If you have accidents in one room you can live with that, but a dog who has to remember his way to the door from the whole house will have more mistakes. If you follow this for two weeks and pay attention, you should know your puppy and his habits. Start gradually and carefully introducing other rooms.
One other tip: Put a blanket or sheet over the crate at night. It makes a den and keeps puppy from seeing you. Now this sounds mean, but try it if your puppy cries. Hit the cage. Or hit the cage and say no. If you let the puppy out, you know what will happen next time. You can also try keeping a hand down next to the cage and talking softly. You have to know your dog. Good Luck

It could help get you through the rough times until skin is better and then go back to regular flea/tick treatments.
Hope this gives you some alternatives.

We just watched a vet on our local news say: If your dog has dry scales, spots and itches, it is an allergy to the fleas. Not just flea bites. Give your dog benadryl. This is certainly worth a try. Then I would start calling groomers and asking them what shampoo works. A good reputable groomer could do a thorough cleanse and calming treatment. Then sell you the correct products. I would wait until the benadryl has had time to work first.
Good luck!

 Bichon's Rule !- ! !

| Barked: Sun May 31, '09 7:11pm PST | | | | | | Oh I miss my three shelties! They lived to about 15 and I got injured so couldn't walk a beautiful sheltie. I used to sit and watch a movie every friday night and brush my shelties. One thing that helps if you are wanting to get rid of old hair is a nice warm bath and a blow dry. Not Hot, but warmer than usual. It will make them blow coat. My dogs lost more hair in September than any other time. 15 years experience, I would not cut a Sheltie, as others said, it is shade. Trim ears, whiskers if you like, feet, and hocks. Also ocasionally I would use thinning shears on their pantaloons. You are so lucky to have this beautiful inteligent breed.
I am very very happy with my beautiful, loving bichon now. They are just the best for someone who has limited mobility. Of course they need much more grooming!

Hi Pasha!
We are hoping you are feeling better by now. It isn't fun to be a sick fluffer. I remember someone posting somewhere here, not to take puppies to pet stores and another warning about what germs might be on the bottom of your shoes if you go there. Just a thought to help keep a little baby safe till shots are done.

There is a vaccine for kennel cough. It would be a good idea to consider for healthy dogs and puppy after they are healthy. I used to go to dog shows a lot with shelties. Most people who take their pups around a lot of dogs get the vaccine. I have a bichon and still get the shot because we go to pet stores and parks, etc.

I see you haven't gotten answers. Perhaps if you would refer to your females as furballs or pretty girls. I see you are from UK where I have a friend and we refer to some things differently. Also, I haven't talked to anyone who breeds bichons on Dogster.
Okay, my answer is remove the male first and concentrate on the girls. Take them on walks together many times a day. Start causous (sp?) Maybe two people to keep dogs separate. Take to a neutral place like a park when things start to improve and see how they act. I think you said you have one of the puppies. While you are getting the other two back together, ask someone to take the puppy for you--maybe two/three weeks. Long enough for the maternal instinct to fade.
I used to breed cats. Basically you need to decide if you want a business of raising puppies or if you want pets. I would get the male neutered while you are working with the females. If you continue to breed you will have the issues each time and you will have to figure out how to separate the dogs. My thought is two females will spar if a male is around.
I wish you good luck

 Bichon's Rule !- ! !
 |
| Barked: Sat Feb 21, '09 1:45pm PST | | | | | | First, I will say I know nothing about this, but had two thoughts.
First: My bichon had a huge "ah~zit" After the dogter removed and we treated the area, it took a long time for the hair to come back. When it did it was sparkling white (made the rest of Maddie look cream). It was back to normal after 6 monthsor so.
Second: There was and interesting Dogs 101 TV program just on about Wheaton terriors. They said a unique traight is, when they are injured their hair comes in in a different color, darker I think. Again I believe it gradually returned to normal.
Maybe if you look up her breed, there is something odd or call a vet. How about a lack of Vitamin D. Maybe not enough sun. In any case you will look better to your superiors if you have looked for information.
Side note:
I worked for a business that had an irrate customer who was very wrong, wanting something for half price. My boss gave her exactly what she wanted. I asked why. He said. Three year olds stomp their feet and get what they want. I doesn't make it right. It's what we have to deal with in the real world.
Yes, interesting! I will be watching.
