Eagle Pack was bought by the same company that owns Wellness, and together, they are now Wellpet. Diamond has nothing to do with the sale, and the new parent company has been very hands-off of Eagle Pack. If you are currently happy with the results from Eagle Pack, I'd stick with it.

Behavior & Training > Tom Rose School?

The Tom Rose School is not far from where I live/work, so there are a number of the school's graduates working in my area. Please, please think about attending a different school. I've seen what happens to dogs those people have trained. Once perfectly confident, stable dogs suddenly develop all sorts of fear problems, complete with peeing all over themselves. I don't know what exactly is taught at the school, so it's possible the graduates aren't following the directions they were given, but I have to wonder why more than one of them thinks it's a great idea to start puppy training by sticking a shock collar on it and zapping it for every mistake. I know groomers and kennel workers who have worked alongside trainers who went through the Tom Rose School, and I've heard all kinds of behind the scenes horror stories that I could potentially get into legal trouble for if I repeated them here.

Please consider attending the Karen Pryor Academy or the SF SPCA school instead. Or, you could get to know some trainers in your area and apprentice for one of them. You don't actually have to attend a dog training school to become a trainer. I've heard good things about the KPA and SF SPCA school, but if money's a problem, there are other ways to get into dog training.

At the kennel where I work, we would happily shave the dog for you. Just today, we stripped a bichon for medical reasons. The results weren't pretty, but the vet wanted his skin to have the air. Even though an Aussie is a double-coated breed (unlike today's bichon), we'd still do it.

Sports & Agility > AKC's mixed breed program

One of my biggest concerns with the new program is that I (and other mutt owners) will pay the $35 listing fee (more than twice as much as I paid for open registration of my purebred borzoi) and still have nowhere to compete. Clubs that hold trials in conjunction with conformation events won't even have the option to include mixed breed classes, and clubs that hold stand-alone trials won't be required to do so. If I pay the listing fee, I should have access to events. That sticker the AKC will send me in Phase II isn't going to cut it.

If mutt owners fork over the cash for the listing fee and find themselves denied access to events, there will be an anti-AKC backlash. At least lack of access right now doesn't cost anything.
