'A winter's night'
Hooray, time for bed, the body to relax and the brain to catch some ZZZZZ’s, …aaah sleep, sweet sleep.
Of course, all three doggies leap onto my side of the bed, hardly leaving me room to get under the covers! Hubby says goodnight, shuts his eyes and within seconds is out for the count – how he does that I just don’t know. Much manoeuvring takes place as old Yorkie ensures his ‘spot’ and hastily moulds himself firmly against my chest, his head in the crook of my arm. Of course, at my back, and also ensuring that his little self is firmly wedged between my shoulders is young Yorkie who generally throws his head back … clonk, never mind he almost knocks me out! Madam Terrier X burrows hell bent for China into the covers and finally settles down behind my knees. Nope, hang on, young Yorkie decides he’d rather sleep in my neck, doesn’t seem concerned that it tickles and gives me the shivers, gets comfy but not before taking a slurp at my ear… eek! Finally, they settle whilst ‘me’ is firmly pinned down (like the guy in Gulliver’s Travels) by let’s say about +- 30lbs of dog. But fear not, I can still breathe, even though I’m required to share my airspace with old Yorkie who needs a dental. Later, I find my toes still have life in them, even if only just a tiny wiggle. As my brain slowly ceases to function I drift into la-la land, then sense that one of the three tykes is sneaking under the covers …… aaah, I feel so sleepy … don’t bother to check (i.e. feeling for floppy ears or long / short tail would tell me who the culprit is under the covers.) Sleepy, but must be careful not to roll over and squish the doggies!
Am sleeping (I think) but can detect a strange odour infiltrating my nostrils … oh no! …... it’s the dreaded ‘flatulence’ moment. ‘Pooh you guys, who released that one?’ Help, I am pinned down. I try escape being asphyxiated and duck my head under the covers. Alas, there I discover the critter who’s responsible for the offending odour. Much gasping and waving of hands to clear the air ... whew, relax. Ah, falling asleep again.
It would seem only minutes have ticked by before I hear what sounds like Thumper, the bunny. Am I dreaming? No, it’s just madam Terrier X seeking relief from an itch. Again, amidst heavy doggie breathing I drift once more into the land of snooze. Seconds later ---------bounce, snap, snarl, bounce and more bounce – ‘Hey you guys it’s early hours of the morning, so stop playing on the bed!!’ Peace at last. Suddenly, ‘Eek! Keep your cold nose off of my face – shoo, go and pester the old man – go to sleep now.’ Sigh; sleep. Am I dreaming again? What is that ghastly sound? No panic, it’s only young Yorkie and madam Terrier X engaged in a private snore-out! Didn’t realise mutts could snore so! ‘Go back to sleep woman.’ I say and doze again.
No, no. no, I don’t want to wake up but hear one of the trio whinging; needs to tiddle … oops, I can’t turn over… something’s holding me down … arm is dead … cramp in legs …push-shove, aaaaah am slightly awake now … circulation is slowly coming back. Am attempting to extricate myself from doggy power. The clock grins evilly at me and says: ‘Its 4am’ ha-ha ‘its 4am’. I give in, mention p-time and in the blink of an eye three pooches are suddenly airborne then landing with a thump on the wooden floor. ‘Shh!’ I say, ‘you’ll wake the old man!’ I drag myself to the back door.
One eye open, I observe 3 doggies i.e. twelve little paddy-paws go hurtling out the door then, because it’s snowing, come hurtling back in again. The look they give me says ‘Its b------ freezing out there Mum!’ ‘Back to bed,’ I say to myself, ‘please – please, more sleep!’ It's dark and in my fogged out state I trip over a pooch in the passage way - much yelping and muttering! I crawl back into bed, beg for a few more minutes sleep. Once again, the trio routine begins … one in front, one at the back one across the legs … sigh.
The alarm clock bursts into song at approximately 5am. – Ugh! The gang bounce madly back and forth and then over me, greeting me with much face slurping and kissing. ‘Get up, get up Mum,’ they say, ‘time for our early morning snack!’ I gently poke my eyes open.
Hubby wakes, smiles and says: ‘Morning dear, sleep well?
Sigh. What can I say?
