Hi Tucker!
My 2 dogs are "free Feeders".. though when my beagle was younger she was given "limited" free feeding.. meaning I would put the food (one 1 scoop for the day) down all day up to 6pm. As I didn't want to have her needing to go Potty all night (that went for water as well)
As for Food or water in the crate.. I would give her 1 or 2 doggies cookies and in the summer time (no a/c) I would put a water bottle hanging on crate door. (like a Giant Bunny Water Bottle) That way you put as much or as little as you like.. they can't "knock" it over and make a mess. I would also refrig her water and put ice cubes in it.
She (my beagle Clover) and Sprite (my chihuahua) are totally free fed now, but still they only get the 1 serving of food, and if they eat it all at once or pick at it all day.. they are only getting that amount (which they like to pick at it, on and off towards the evening)
Which as I mentioned I have my chihuahua, so I leave them both loose in my room (not as little puppies though) So for Sprite I was worried he wouldn't eat enough at a scheduled feeding time, so by leaving food out all day he could eat when he needs.
But when he was a tiny less then 2 pound puppy I also would give him nutra-cal subsitute.
But "we" found what works for us. As your puppy is new.. I wouldn't worry to much about "over feeding".. as sounds like Tucker is a "pick every now and then eater".. so as a Puppy I would let him eat as much as he likes.. up untill a certain time (basically, take food away with in 6 hours before your bed time or last potty for Tucker. BUT if you are having trouble house breaking, then "schedule" time feedings may work better. I would also suggest talking it over with your vet.
