laugh out loudlaugh out loud I'm not a raw feeder but.. I love this thread!

red face I look at meat and look at prices, with the dogs in mind the whole time.. And I don't even feed raw. I wonder along thinking "One day...". I DID feed 'em chicken thighs one day last week though.. And i'm thinking that raw is going to have to become a part of their diet at least once a week! (fully raw wouldn't work at the moment.. When I move out, thats when fully raw can happen laugh out loud)

By the time I got to bed last night her gums were normal and she was acting a little better. When I woke up this morning she was lay on the bed next to me (in her usual spot, with my arm over her!).. Limping, but not as bad as last night.. At least she was actually putting the paw down! I took her to the vets anyway though and they said that she has pretty much sprained it and that it looks like I caught part of her pad/nail which was most likely causing her pain as well. So, Beanies okay.. Much better after resting all night and she should fine in a couple of days! Silly dog making me worry so much shock

The vet also said that her teeth are very good ("How old is she? NINE? Really??" was the reaction laugh out loud ) and that her hips seem pretty good (when he was checking for any pain in her joints)

Ive touched her leg (much to her displeasure, though she stayed still for me) and its around the joint that she really didn't like at all. I don't think anything broken (I hope not.. Leaving her to suffer for hours with a broken leg? Cruel frown.. I feel bad enough having to wait until morning as it is). Shes pretty calm now and, like I say, ive put the blanket over her to keep her warm. I managed to get her to drink a little water (she wouldn't before)

Poor Trix, shes not having a good time recently frown.. First the fight with Rox that resulted in stitches and a week of antibiotics.. Now this.. Poor thing! frown. Two vet visits in the space of a couple of months. Funny to think that in 9 years of having her, apart from general check-ups, she had never needed to go for anything else (apart from a UTI last year!)

ETA- Oops Chilli, didn't see your post. No, their opening hours are 7:30 until 4pm and theres a vet there until about 9 or 10 pm for emergencies, but after that, nothing. Its a low cost vet, so.. shrug

Shes stopped panting now, lay under the bed still though, not looking too happy! I covered her with a blanket because her gums looked a little pale.. Combined with panting and shaking a little, I was worried about shock and know that keeping her warm if that was the case is the best idea. The constant whining has stopped now.... Vet visit in 7 hours from now (we are from the UK, its 00:30 at the moment!) thinking

I was closing my bedroom door and, not realizing that she was stood in the way, managed to hit Trix in her left back leg. She yelped, I apologized.. I realized that she was limping but I figured it was just a reaction to the pain at that moment. Fast forward an hour or so.. She wont put the leg down on the floor and yelped in pain when getting up from lying down. She is now lay underneath my bed and wont come out... Panting the whole time (pain? Stress? Shock?). She wouldn't eat (it was time to feed the dogs, I tried giving her her food, she doesn't want it). I can't get her to the vets until tomorrow morning.. Is there anything I can do until then or should I just leave her to it? frown I feel so bad cry

For MY next dog I want a GSD. However, if I am still with the boyfriend a few years from now, the next dog will probably be a Ridgeback (although it would be him, not mine!).. And I probably wont even end up with a GSD as 'my' next dog, it will probably be a rescue mutt of some sort! I'll get my GSD one day though.. cloud 9

wave Hi Ernie.

While I didn't actually get in touch with a behaviourist and have someone come round to the house, my tutor in college has worked with a lot of people and helped a lot of people solve behavioural problems with their dogs. She suggested muzzling the girls and seeing how they went on.

So, this is a bit of an update on the whole situation..

For a couple of weeks I muzzled them and took them for walks together (with help from Andrew, my boyfriend).. Then last week when my mum and her boyfriend were away for 5 days, I let them be around each other in the house, muzzled. There was one growl at one point but no attempts to fight. The first day they kept circling each other and sniffing each other, but then completely ignored each other. By day 3, they lay next to each other a few times.
the girls lay next to each other

Day 4, they were attempting to play, especially Rox who was doing lots of play bows and running around in circles! There were still a few tense moments but on the whole they have been pretty good. I'm going to carry on with muzzles for a while and discuss the next step with Jen (my college tutor). But so far, its going well!

I'm guessing many people wouldn't suggest the muzzling idea but its working well for us. I did email the behaviourist/trainer who I went to when Rox was in training classes, but her advice wasn't particularly helpful! The muzzles being on the dogs has stopped my mum being to tense and afraid of whats going to happen all the time and is also helped me to stop feeling nervous. I'm guessing us humans feeling more relaxed has had a major effect on the dogs behaviour as well. Anyhow, i'll keep you all updated. Thanks for caring everyone hug

Yeah the UK really does need to sort itself out when it comes to good dog food shock. The canned food that my girls eat is pretty good but the kibble is fairly rubbish, and expensive rubbish at that! They do get green tripe twice a week, a raw egg and soon will be getting a RMB once a week too, so they don't eat too badly!! But still.. Better quality kibble is something we could do with!

I can't believe I missed my big shaggy haired shelter mutt off the list. Ive always said that I want a large sized shaggy haired rescue dog probably for as long as ive wanted a German Shepherd!

As well as the two I already have (GSD cross and Staffie cross), if I were to list all of the breeds ive wanted to own/ plan on owning one day (though some are unrealistic!)...

German Shepherd
English Springer Spaniel
Rhodesian Ridgeback
Welsh Springer Spaniel
Bullmastiff
Bearded Collie
Standard Poodle
Golden Retriever
Leonberger
Newfoundland
Greyhound

Im pretty sure theres more, but I can't think at the moment laugh out loud. Notice how mosty of them are fairly large in size? shock big grin
