Do you think the time is right?
May I say goodbye to pain filled days and endless hopeless nights?
I've lived my life and done my best, an example tried to be.
So can I take that step beyond to set my spirit free?
I didn't want to go at first, I fought with all my might.
But something seems to draw me now to a warm and living Light.
I want to go I really do, it's difficult to stay.
But I will try as best I can to live just one more day.
To give you time to care for me and share your love and fears
I love you so, and that you know, because I see your tears.
I'll not be far, I promise that, and hope you'll always know
That my spirit will be close to you wherever you may go.
Thank you for loving me, You know I love you too,
That's why it's hard to say goodbye and "end" this life with you.
So hold me now just one more time and let me hear you say,
Because you care so much for me, you'll let me go today.

B'Elanna (In- Memory)

| | Barked: Tue Sep 29, '09 5:32pm PST | | | | | | B'Elanna passed away at home, at one of her sleeping spots in the doorway of the frontroom. It was midnight so there wasn't anyone I could call at that time to help me move her. I left her there, not being able to sleep myself, and looking at her from across the room, it looked like she was sleeping. I thought this might be a good way for our young Collie, Amber, to see for herself and in her own way understand.
Amber was a pup when she came to our house and immediately bonded with B'Elanna. They did everything together and B'Elanna was Amber's "big sister", teacher and protector.
During the night, Amber passed by B'Elanna but didn't notice anything and walked right on by. In the early morning greetings, Amber looked at B'Elanna with a kind of funny look on her face as if she was thinking, "why aren't you getting up for our morning greeting and to go outside?" She touched B'Elanna lightly with her nose and then walked away. I don't know if anything registered in Amber's mind or if she understood what happened.
My neighbor came to carry B'Elanna out to my car (I took her to our vet to have her cremated) and Amber was there and saw everything.
Afterwards, Amber grieved along with the rest of us and we went for walks and played to keep our minds busy. I think it must be very hard when your furkid sees his/her best friend go in the car and never come back. How do you explain, except to just talk to them and hope that they can sense or understand what has happened. But then, if it's true when they say that animals can see spirits, they see their friend and understand they can't be together, they're mourning for the loss of a physical presence.
I don't think there is any way you can prepare a dog for her best friend going to the Bridge except to be there for her, play together, cry together and know in your heart that we will all be together again, meeting at the Bridge.
