Hi Everyone!! wave

Sorry about my delayed response – I had one of those I don’t even have time to get to the washroom days and was unable to check back on this post till tonight. Thank you so much for the supportive messages, funny stories and recommendations on additional products to try.

Seeing as how pretty much everyone says the smell “lingers” it looks like I have time to try all of the suggestions until I find one that works best – or one that fixes it all – or just wait it out….and it would of course be my car that gets it the worst. Everyone makes fun of me and my sensitive nose. I have been told I have a better nose than a blood hound…very funny huh?!?!?

Sigh – I love them so much and would do anything for these guys. If we had to do it all over again hubby and I would still stick them in the car and take them to the E-Vet based on the info we had…how sad is that? I get to live with skunk for an indefinite amount of time and these guys get to go back to their cuddle love and treats. Grrrr.

Big hugs to you all hug and Thank you!

Well it finally happened to my dogs at 2 am on a Sat morning. Kisses decided that she wanted to make friends and play with a skunk. Reese’s ran over to check out what was going on…and well the skunk didn’t find either of them as cute and fun to play with as we do…Kisses got nailed in the face with the spray and Reese’s got the rest of it since he was about 4 feet away  We were DUMB enough to let them IN the house after this incident in a moment of stupid, stupid, really stupidiness.

Don’t worry – the kids are actually OK now. The peroxide, baking soda & dish soap recipe did the trick and got rid of 99.9% of the smell out of their fur.

However my issue now is the smell is now in my car and the house. Why in the car you ask? Because we hauled them off to the emergency vet because we thought the spray was going to hurt them…we were told once that if the spray gets in their eyes it can make them blind…

We’ll we were turned away from the ER vet and they told us that they could not help us. We were told just bathe them in the “skunk shampoo above” – they would not even let us into the office.

Please tell me that someone out there has some advice on removing the smell from my car and the house.

Here is what we have done so far for the house:
(1) Our house is all hard wood floors and has been mopped several times.
(2) All soft surfaces the kids have touched have been washed 2xs.
(3) House has been febreezed to death – I’m not kidding.
(4) Febreez has been followed up with a baking soda and water solution spray on all soft surfaces.
(5) 32 bowls of vinegar in shallow bowls have been layed around the house.

Here is what I have done to my car (which has a leather interior):
(1) Febreeze the entire thing 2xs
(2) Put a cup of vinager in the cup holder.
(3) Sprayed baking soda and water mixture on soft surfaces – floor mats and such.

Did I miss anything? Is my house and car toast? Will I live with this forever?

Someone please tell me that this smell will go away…please?!?!

Behavior & Training > Is it true - if a Dog Bites once...

Hey Everyone,

Thanks so much for your feedback so far and I apologize for my delayed response. I'm going to do my best to try and give the general details of what is going on - but keep in mind that my husband and I are going to enlist the help of a behaviorist or trainer shortly.

Reeses is 4 years old now and in case it matters he is neutered. We adopted him from a rescue when he was about 8 weeks old. He loves people and children. As soon as we were able to we started to take him to the dog park and he went every day (literally) for about 2.5 years. We wanted a happy, balanced, socialized & exercised pup so we went out of our way to get him out for several hours everyday.

All of a sudden one day he became very possessive/protective of my husband in the park setting. Anytime a certain type of dog approached him Reeses would get upset and start to growl - the dogs that would upset him are always larger dogs and usually the type with a short muzzle (ie boxers, bulldogs etc). It was always only growling and barking at that time. The difficult part is that we never knew which dog would trigger him and when it would happen.

Shortly after this behavior started we adopted another puppy who was 4lbs at the time - but is now 9lbs full grown. Reeses had a period of adjustment but now they totally love each other and get along fabulously. HOWEVER this is also the point where Reeses started to act out even more at the dog park - but still no biting has happened yet - and then this whole business of leash aggression started. We decided to stop going to the dog park because it was getting to stressful.

So that is the backdrop up to the point where he ends up biting a dog. A friend of ours asked us to dog sit for a few hours and this is a dog that Reeses had never had problems with in the past at the dog park or any other setting. As soon as the dog came in the front door Reeses was barking and barking and barking - but things settled down and to be honest it is our fault...we should have taken that as a sign that something was going to happen. A little over an hour goes by uneventfully until my hubby and I end up sitting next to each other on the couch with Reeses next to us on the couch. Our friends dog just casually walked up to us to say "Hi" and Reeses lunges out and snaps his teeth and catching the dog and drawing blood. The other dog did nothing to provoke this - she is known for being an EXTREMELY passive dog.

Ok sorry for the long winded post - but any additional help would be appreciated smile

Hey guys, Thanks for your responses smile

It helps to know that my pup is not "blood thirsty" - and instead I have things to work on with him.

Hey Everyone, Thanks for the well wishes. It is officially 2 full days after the "episode" and we are fine and appear to be doing well. Husband and I each stayed home over the last two days to moniter them and I think we feel safe now to leave them alone. I am so happy that they are ok and back to their normal selves.

The funny thing? Everyone in my life is totally in love with these two - and you can't even imagine how many people voluntered to watch them over the last two days - no one wanted these two alone and everyone wanted to keep an eye on them. The only thing was that WE (hubby and I ) couldn't bear to leave them either!

My mom was so angry at me. Her first words to me after I told her what happened were " see I told you not to get any dogs...they are to expensive and you have to much going on in your life". I told her that I made a commitment to take care of these guys .... they were already dumped once...I'm not doing that to them again....and believe it or not my mom and I agreed on that point! One of the few times in life that we agreed smile oh wait we did agree on her idea of us getting pet insurance though. Crazy - my mom and agreed on two things in 1 day....talk about miracles laugh out loud

Thank you all again for listening and sending well wishes. I know accidents happen - but man it hurts to see them hurting. I have now moved EVERYTHING off of the counter - and even everything off the microwave that sits on top of a counter (where the Godiva box was)....I wont assume that anything is safe from them ever again.

Hi Guys! Thanks for your responses. The munchkins seem back to normal this morning. I opted to work at home today so that I can keep an eye on them.

The Vet called this morning to check on them and asked me what happened last night, what they ate, was there vomitting, etc. They told me that if they have excess diareah & throwing up they need to go back in. So far so good on all of that. But I'm keeping an eye on them for now.

In the end I got to freaked out to let them have a free for all on the water. I gave them their bowls for a minute at a time with a 10 min break in btwn just to pace them. Once they seemed like they weren't going to kill the bowl of water I just left them down on the floor and they have been pacing themselves. MAN THEY PEE"D A LOT last night.

As for their antsy-ness. I think they were just uncomfortable. They weren't running around or anything - they just kept laying down - getting up and moving to a different spot and re adjusting themselves.

I think I'm still worried - but not in panic mode as I was yesterday. I think the vet thought I was crazy cuz I think I cried for 2 hours straight.

Thanks again everyone.

Ok believe it or not - after Kisses threw up some of the charcol she seems much more alive and more back to herself. That makes me feel better. I hope that I'm not doing that false hope thing. But she has that "look" in her eyes again that makes me know that she is feeling better.

I let Resses go to town on another bowl of water...and he drank and drank and drank but did eventually stop.

Man I love these guys.

Keep your fingers crossed for my munchkins.

Oops now Reeses is sitting by the door to got potty outside.

Kisses & Reeses Mom.

Kisses just threw up the charcol - I'm not sure how much of it stayed in her.

I have a feeling I'm not going to sleep tonight....
