Affenpinscher! applause Jelly is my first toy dog and my first affenpinscher. Before this I had Miniature Schnauzers over a 25 year period. I love the terrier temperament on the affie without the barking. Jelly barks very little. She is also very affectionate. Other toys that interest me are the Papillon and the Brussels Griffin.

Other Barks & Woofs > SWINE FLU, Are you worried?

I am concerned about the H1N1 flu. I am being very careful about hygiene with lots of hand washing, I carry hand sanitizer, try to keep away from sick people, never put my hands to my face but I am basically living my life normally. About the only thing I am doing different is avoiding anything with big crowds. Even my Christmas shopping is done so I won't be in the holiday crowds at the malls. I am reading that their are more flu cases in the hospital although I am not noticing more people at work away sick or any reductions of service at any businesses that I deal with. In my City about 100,000 people have had the shot out of 650,000. Just this alone will help contain the spread. I am not in the group that can get the shot yet but I will get it when I can. I have never had a seasonal flu shot because the seasonal flu shot is just a "best guess" as to what virus will appear in the up coming flu season. The H1N1 shot is specifically what the virus is and it hasn't mutated yet. We will be having flu shot clinics where I work where both the H1N1 and the seasonal flu shots will be offered.

I sit in a Snoozer Lookout car seat with a seat belt. I am in the front seat because the front air bag turns off in our car if the weight is below a certain amount and it is below that amount when I ride because I am only 8 lbs. big grin

I like bio-groom products. I use bio-groom protein lanolin shampoo. It is a concentrate that can be diluted, tearless, biodgradeable, ph balanced and safe for puppies. You would likely have to go to a specialty pet supply store to get it because it isn't sold at places like Walmart.

I am on Dogster every day but I don't come to the Forums as often. I spend my time doing a diary, adding pictures, answering p-mail and contributing to a couple of Groups. A couple of times a week I will go to the Forums main page and look down the topics and if something catches my eye I will go there. The title of this thread on the main page caught my eye and that is why I am here. I will go looking through the Forums recent threads about once a month. I contribute only if I have something to add and it already hasn't been said. I used to go to the Forums on most days. I have since got busy doing other things on Dogster and it really is a time issue. I don't have the time to go through the Forums so I don't as much.

Choosing the Right Dog > Whats the most popular breed in your area?

In the shelters it is almost all big dogs like German Shepards, Labs, Borders and Husky types and crosses. I live in the suburbs of a City and we have lots of green space. We have lots of dogs in our area although they are mostly smaller dogs and 95% look purebred. The Shih Tzu is very popular. I always say that you just have to sit at my dining room table for a couple of hours on the weekend and look out the window and it is like a parade of breeds and you will see lots of different breeds walking by and many times in groups of two. We see Miniature Schnauzers, Poms, Shih Tzus, Westies, Bedlingtons, poodles, American Eskimo Dogs, Min Pins, Yorkshire Terriers, Sealyhams, Welsh Terriers, Brussels Griffon, Scottish Terrier etc etc. We have a couple of Labs next door, a Shih Tzu behind us and a couple of Border Collies down the street.

Choosing the Right Dog > Necessary to register your dog?

We do run into trouble with AKC when it comes to the CKC non breeding registration because AKC won't recognize it. So, if the dog that is sold is being shown both in the USA and Canada then the breeder can't use the Canadian non-breeding contract/registration. Other then that it works well. I used to sell puppies on non-breeding contracts all the time and I never had a problem. The important thing like any other agreement is to get it in writing exactly what the conditions are to lift the non-breeding and have both parties sign.

Yes, I found people really enjoyed naming their dog when it came to registering them. I would always let people name their puppies if I could but I didn't have to. Since CKC mandates the breeder to register all puppies then the breeder could also name them all if they wanted to. I also found that pet people just liked having registration papers. The Canadian Kennel Club ones are nice looking and diploma size and people would frame them and put them on their wall. Others kept them in a scrap book that was on their dog.

I would register for most of the reasons stated. When I got my first purebred registered dog I had no thought of doing anything with the dog that required the papers. I did end up getting hooked and competed in Obedience in Canada (where I live). I then registered the dog with AKC and obtained American obedience titles too. So, you never know what you will want to do in the future.

Just as information, it is compulsory for breeders to register all puppies born in Canada with the Canadian Kennel Club (those eligible to be registered) and to supply the papers to the owners at no extra cost. Of course, the cost is worked into the purchase price. We also have "non-breeding" contracts that most reputable breeders get pet people to sign and they are sent into CKC at the time of registration. Those registration papers come back a different colour and have "non-breeding" stamped across them in big red letters. The dog can compete in anything with CKC including conformation with the non-breeding papers. No puppies from dogs with non-breeding registrations can be registered. Of course, most reputable breeders also have a spay/neuter contract with pet people. Sometimes these "non-breeding" papers are also used on show dogs. For example, a breeder may have a contract with the owner that they have to finish a championship before they can breed the dog so the dog is sold on a non-breeding contract and gets the non-breeding papers. Once the owner fulfills what ever was agreed to (in this example getting a championship) then the non-breeding contract is lifted and CKC mails out a regular registration. I know I am off topic a bit but I thought some people may be interested in this.

Dog Health > Heart Worm Preventative and Eating
Jelly

The world- belongs to me!

Barked: Sat Aug 1, '09 6:31am PST
Has any one else had a problem with giving heart worm preventative and then their dog doesn't eat or eats very little??? We only give heart worm preventative in my area for six months of the year (June - November). Last year I started Jelly on "Interceptor" and she almost quit eating. By the end of the month her eating would pick up and when I gave her an Interceptor at the beginning of the month she would go off her food. I looked up the side effects and sure enough anorexia (or not eating) was one of them. Over the winter she did not get any heart worm preventative and she was eating good and was in perfect weight. I talked to my vet and she suggested using "Revolution" this year because it is absorbed into the skin and would be easier on the digestive tract. I have given her two doses of "Revolution" with the same result of not eating. She eats a bit but has lost weight. Again I looked up the side effects and anorexia is one of them. I am coming to the conclusion that she can not be on heart worm preventative. Anyone have any experience with this? Jelly is a fussy eater at the best of times but the heart worm preventative is just pushing this over the edge. Jelly is healthy in every other way and has been cleared as healthy by our vet. (including blood work) I don't believe there is any other cause and with the experience of two different heart worm preventatives over two different years it is pointing to the heart worm preventative as the cause.
