let's backtrack, shall we? i have this really, really cool Halloween costume, and my mom wants to show me off.
other than to trick-or-treaters for tomorrow, my mom wants me to be the star of the show, "the man", or the "doggie man", or whatever you'd call it just so i could get plenty of "pets and adoration", which my mom thinks i so wholely deserves.
my question is, are there any doggie Halloween events left in the San Francisco area? | | | | |

Thank you very much for your kind idea.
Actually, one of the most reputable animal welfare groups in the Philippines, PAWS (Philippine Animal Welfare Society) does have a website with donation information:
http://www.paws.org.ph/site/309/default.aspx
in case you wanted to do more research on them, here are a couple of more links:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_Animal_Welfare_Socie ty_(PAWS)
http://www.hsus.org/about_us/humane_society_internation al_hsi/hsi_assist/animal_advocates/the_philippine_animal_welfare.htm l
this group is absolutely on the front lines doing both animal and human rescue operations about this issue. i know that PAWS had to work with the Philippine military to gain access to entering the especially dangerously hit areas, but the point of the matter is, they're there, not making excuses like the rest.
thank you very much for your support!

she personally witnessed the killing of a neighborhood dog that was dragged on the streets by its scruff, and then the men proceeded to tie it onto a tree limb by its neck, and cut its throat while the dog was still alive. absolutely disgustingly brutal!
i am glad there is now a law to help prevent this from happening ever again.

after learning about the current State of Calamity declaration for the Republic of the Philippines, Dogster Top Dog Ted Rheingold immediately dispatched the site's writer to do a story on the subject.

-----------------
Last Friday, I placed a rather large-ish order from PetEdge.com for collars, leashes and muzzles - several hundred pieces. The reason I ordered it is because there is currently a major catastrophe going on in the Philippines that has affected a great many dogs in the country, and one of the major non-profit groups there, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_Animal_Welfare_Soci ety_(PAWS)
http://www.paws.org.ph/site/1/default.aspx
http://www.h sus.org/about_us/humane_society_international_hsi/hsi_assist/animal_ advocates/the_philippine_animal_welfare.html
is in dire need of these donations.
After PetEdge found about what their products are slated for, one of their supervisors called me today to let me know that they're giving me a large discount off the entire order, and that the shipment will be sent rush 2 days, so that I could get it to the Philippines sooner.
To PetEdge, thank you very, very much on behalf of the doggies of the Philippines!!!

(backstory on the current conditions in the Philippines):
About a week ago, Typhoon Ketsana (known in the Phillippines as "Ondoy") made landfall and dropped 17.9 inches of rain on Metro Manila in a span of 24 hours - the most in 42 years. A month's worth of rainfall in a single day washed away homes and flooded large areas, stranding thousands on rooftops in the city and elsewhere. Ketsana later crossed over to Vietnam and Cambodia, where it is still active. Over 360 people are known to have been killed, and damage estimates are reaching $100 million. Unfortunately, another tropical storm may be headed toward the southern Philippines on Wednesday but is still 600 miles off the coast.
Elsewhere, dog and chicken carcasses floated in the water as rescuers in rubber boats tried to navigate a mountain of debris.

The government of the Philippines has declared the country in a State of Calamity as hundreds of human lives (and countless thousands of domesticated pets and livestock) have been lost due to Typhoon Ketsana.
I have been corresponding with Mr. Ted Rheingold/ Dogster CEO, who mentioned that he will ask Dogster's writer to cover the story, but I'm afraid we don't have any ideas on how we can get the point across to ALL of Dogster's 500,000+ members especially if they don't read the Blog section of the website.
I already began a post about it here:
http://www.dogster.com/forums/Dogs_in_the_News/thread/641722
it's the #2 post, but no responses mean no one will pay attention to the story.
Do any of you have any ideas you can share on how we as a collective, can help?
I've been corresponding with a local San Francisco television reporter who is interested on covering the animal welfare angle to this story, but there isn't a 100% hook yet on how he can make this a headline type story. Dogster's involvement can certainly put this over the top, but the response has to be in great numbers and we need to be able to demonstrate some type of results in order to make this truly newsworthy.
I really need to hear FRESH INPUT and IDEAS on this subject. I'm kinda running out of steam
Soooo, absolutely any suggestions or answers would be very much welcome! In order to centralize the ideas, (besides pushing the link up so that more people can learn about this), please post your response on the above link.
This absolutely means so much right now, as this is truly one of the darkest hours for the Philippines, and every little bit can be of tremendous help.
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Rhodora de Jesus-Maiolo

Wow, if someone would organize a petition asking for these things, I'll definitely sign. I think this is a fantastic step towards the right direction.
I for one am not a Nike fan, so it's not too hard for me to refrain buying the brand. I imagine hundreds or thousands of signatures on a petition, sent to the NFL for example would really get the voice heard that the public demands accountability from its sports heroes.
How about it? I think you really have something there, Tillie. | | | | |

OMG, it's so nice to hear from you again Yes, I've been out of commission for a while, doing chemo and still am. More importantly though, the Dogsters' voices have been heard, YAY!!!!!
Since the law has passed, there has been a serious dent that happened to the dog meat industry there. Sadly, it hasn't obliterated the entire thing yet, but there has really been great progress! Very, very rich and influential ring leaders within the industry have been arrested and are currently serving jail time. Ha ha and thank God for small victories!
Big kisses and luv you!

| Barked: Sat Oct 3, '09 10:07am PST | | | | | | Dear Figaro and Bilbo,
Thank you for opening the floor on this subject. I am a Filipina, and I do know quite a bit about this, so I'm delighted to shed some light to help clear misconceptions.
In the mountainous Benguet province of the Philippines is where the indigenous Ifugao tribe lives. The Ifugao are a peaceful, religious people, practicing their own set of beliefs and way of life. It is from one of these religious rites, is where the practice of eating dog meat came about. To the Ifugaos, if a death or a similar occurrence happens to a family, their religion dictates that a sacrifice of killing a dog will protect and guard the spirit of the living. An entire religious ritual is performed involving tribe elders, continuous praying, and so on.
To the Ifugaos, killing a dog is not just done to appease the appetite of one who wants to eat dog meat, as what is happening today. Butchering a dog as a matter of fact talks of death or misfortune having happened prior to the ritual, so this is not a matter that is taken lightly. The Ifugaos portray a dog as a symbol of death, and also as a symbol of protection.
Fast forward to 16 March 1521, when the very first Portuguese-born Spanish explorer, Ferdinand Magellan, sighted the Samar region of the Philippines. What followed was 377 years of a very bloody, violent Spanish rule over the Filipino people.
Amongst one of the goodies the Spaniards imparted to Filipino men, is the Latin idea of machismo. Well, doing something consistently for 377 years is a really, really, hard habit to break.
Let's fast forward even further to present day Philippines, where now an estimated 500,000 dogs are killed annually for human consumption. Eating dogs has been illegal since 1998 in the Philippines when Republic Act 8485 (the Philippine Animal Welfare Act) became a law, but due to lack of enforcement, live dogs and dog meat are sold openly at markets and restaurants in the Cordilleran Region, Benguet province.
Now I want to be very clear on who the target market is, the specific people who eat dog meat in present day Philippines. Sadly, it is the MEN. I'm not trying to do a man against woman point here, but is plain fact that it is men who are doing the butchering, the killing and the eating of dogs. Uneducated, barbaric men who in all their machismo firmly believe the urban legend of eating dog meat would make the individual more virile - oh so sexy!
Pretty soon, the practice of eating dog meat came down from the mountains, promoted by men who owned and ran the girlie strip joints, where dog meat is served hand in hand as a side dish to beer. Much like beer and pretzels, except dog meat is still cheaper than pretzels. Let's not forget too, the virility thing, that's really important.
Nowadays, go to any ghetto neighborhood in Philippine metropolis of Manila, and you will find street corners where men congregate drinking beer, and eating dog meat. All this has absolutely nothing to do with religion, this has now become an unfortunate way of life.
For the same reason of if you visit any street corner in South Central LA, you'll find thuggish gangsters drinking beer, selling drugs, promoting prostitution. It is a sad, sad way of life that is a bane to the rest of the peaceful people living in the neighborhood, but there just isn't much that can be done about it. The police can try to drive them away, but soon enough, they evidently return. The same outcome happens in the Philippines too.
By the way, the preferred method of killing dogs, to preserve their "virility-imparting essence" is incredibly brutal and barbaric. Dogs that are transported endure torture methods including tying its muzzle with rope so that it can not make any noise, stuffing it into the backs of trucks where there is little room to breathe, leaving it in vehicles for days without any food or water in the stifling heat, and finally slaughtering it by having its throat cut while still conscious.
This is the reason why the new law was passed. The Philippine government is trying to make an effort to squash its dog meat industry. This is why it was such a victory for the dogs, and the rest of the country in general, because now even in a small way, something is being done to put a stop to this insidious trade. | | | | |
