| Barked: Fri Jul 24, '09 11:08pm PST | | | | | | Oh wow, $3600??? I could buy a trip overseas with that much money...wow. I got Nova from Petland before I knew better (I actually had an ASPCA dog book and it said something about pet stores being ok, so I believed it. Not all research material is equal). I paid $800 for her. I guess we got lucky, she trials in agility and everyone loves her. bol
Although like other dogsters, I've learned and I tell people NEVER to buy from bybs or puppy mills. I didn't realize that some people out there don't want to hear the truth or choose to remain ignorant about pet store dogs...how sad.

I know a lot of people in the dog show world are extremely upset about what happened. This was a lapse in judgment, but in this career where the lives of other people's dogs, people who count on you to care for them, something like this is simply unacceptable. I cannot imagine what those poor dogs must have suffered through due to her ignorance.

For USDAA there are two groups, Championship and Performance. The latter is exactly like the former except the jump heights are lower, there are no spread hurdles utilized, and the A-frame is set lower. It is not just for older dogs- it is very competitive in many areas.
Nova is 18" so would normally jump 22" in USDAA Championship, but because I enter her in Performance she jumps 16".

| Barked: Tue May 26, '09 5:49am PST | | | | | | The one thing you must have for agility, or any off-lead sport really, is control. If you do not have enough control over your dog to trust him in off-lead in an excited state then he is not ready for agility class, since a great deal of time will be spent waiting for your turn on the equipment and watching other dogs zoom past.
I have a dog-reactive dog who is not necessarily aggressive, but I can get her to focus on me and I trust her off-lead, whether at the practice jump or in the ring at a trial. You should consult with a behaviorist about his issues and possibly take an obedience class if s/he thinks your dog is ready for it. Many agility clubs require a dog to have basic obedience (sit, stay, down, come, leave it) down anyways before allowing a new dog into an agility class.
