Dog Health > POOP EATER!! HELP!!!!!

Thanks everyone!! We are feeding each dog a few pineapple chunks a day, which didn't work when Obi was eating his own poop (neither did Forbid though) but it actually DOES seem to be working on Quinn's poop. So far so good, anyway. We're keeping our paws crossed that it will keep working wink

What are you feeding him??

Obi had that problem too. We were feeding him the same food we feed Brandy & Quinn-- either all life stages or adult type food-- which the vet said should be okay, even though she recommended large breed puppy food. Well it evidently was too much for his puppy guts because he was farting constantly. A month ago we decided to try a puppy food and just like magic, his farts are way fewer. They still smell just as bad, but they aren't as strong or frequent, and they don't linger like they used to... thank God!!snoopy

Thanks Harley!! We tried pineapple when Obi was eating his own poop and it didn't work, but we are going to try it again for the other dogs and see what happens.

Food & Nutrition > Why rotate feed?

Brandy-licious!!

We rotate food for the adult dogs at our house because we had been feeding the same food for over a year-- same flavor and formula-- and it was a really good food too, but Brandy developed an allergy to one of the ingredients (pretty sure it was turkey) and she had bloody diarrhea and her eyes were constantly boogery and red. We actually thought she had a bad case of giardia. What a relief to find out it was a food allergy!! Anyway, I've read and been told that if you rotate foods every month or so, it helps to prevent food sensitivity and allergies. We've been doing it for the better part of 2+ years now and I gotta say, so far so good!! way to go

I know this subject has been gone over ad nauseum, but I looked around Dogster and couldn't find what I'm looking for.

Obi used to eat his own poop all the time, but finally seems to have stopped. Unfortunately now he is eating Quinn's poop and I don't mean he's eating it off the ground either. I feel like I'm going to throw up because of what I just witnessed but here it is-- Quinn was having a crap in the backyard and Obi was following him around eating the turds as they came out before they even hit the ground!!!!

We don't think food is the issue either-- Quinn and Brandy are rotated on Avoderm/Canidae/California Natural/Kirkland and Obi is on Blue Buffalo large breed puppy.

My husband thinks this is some weird form of submission, since Obi is terrified of Quinn, but I don't know. I don't know what we're going to do with this dog if this doesn't STOP. Does anyone know why he would do this??

Gosh what a handsome guy!! I'm thinking Rottweiler and maybe some Bernese (or some other kind) Mountain dog, just because of his color. He looks like such a sweet boy!!

Choosing the Right Dog > how many dogs is too many dogs

I agree with everyone who said it depends on the time, space, and money that you have to spend, but like others, I think the breeds and ages of the dogs have a whole lot to do with it too.

When we just had Brandy, she was super easy to deal with. She's a medium energy dog with the occasional high energy zoomy boost where she wants to run and act goofy till she wears herself out. Then we got Quinn-- SUPER high energy, SUPER high maintenance, 24/7, and a complete monster until we started training him, which helped him to learn when it's okay to be wild and when it's not. So then two became as easy as one.

In our apartment in Denver, two dogs were the max allowed so it wasn't a problem. When we moved up to our tiny little town in the mountains and bought our house, we decided to add another canine to the mix. We wanted another girl, probably a smallish breed (Sheltie, Corgi, small mixed breed) but before we could really start looking for our new family member, Obi came along and with the story behind him, who could refuse? Not us, that's for sure. Obi is not just a handful, he's several hundred handfuls. You can't leave him alone EVER. He has more energy than he knows what to do with. Also, the boys seem to be in a constant battle for Brandy's and our attention. At our house, it's madness, mayhem, and disorder all the way around the clock right now. Hopefully when Obi gets his goodies removed he will mellow a bit and we can start serious training. That should make things easier.

The only thing we've noticed cost-wise is we do have to buy more food and because of where we live now, it costs more. Because he's a large breed and he's still got lots of growing to do, Obi eats about as much as the other two dogs combined-- that will change too as he gets older, I know. A few more vet fees, but our vet here in town costs about half what we paid in the city, so that part hasn't been much of an issue. For us though, because of the breeds we have, three dogs is actually kind of pushing it. I can't imagine bringing another dog into our home right now.

Another factor that nobody seems to have mentioned is the legal aspect in the area where you live. Lots of places have limits on the number of dogs you can have. I think the limit in our area is actually 3. I know in Denver it was 3, unless you got some kind of special permit.

Interesting topic!! smile
