We have been heartbroken since the news came out. Too many tears cry
Five of us pups are Angels and our pages helped to keep us "alive" now Mom is devastated that they will soon be gone. It is so very unfair...
Love and hug to all of you it has been a wonderful ride.

Behavior & Training > Has an electric fence worked for you? Training advice?

Ramsey

I am the- Princess

We have had an invisible fence system (prefer invisible to electric) for 10 years now and I think it is wonderful. If you train the dogs properly then you will have years of worry free freedom for your dog(s). The best way to train is to put up the flags around the yard to visually mark the fence for the dog. For the first few days keep your dog on a leash and just walk them around the yard without the fence collar on. Each time the dog goes near the fence zone gently tug the leash and say fence. Once you have gotten the dog away from the fence (flags) praise them highly and reward them. Continue this for a few days until all you have to do is say the word fence and the dog retreats on their own. Now is the time to put the collar on. With the collar on again use the leash and go into the yard with the dog. As the dog approaches the fence again say fence and have them retreat back to you. This is also the time when most pups will get their first "correction" from the fence. If the pup automatically jumps away and back to you then give lots of praise and reward. After a couple of days like this then take off the leash and go into the yard with the pup and observe. Again you can use the word fence if they stray too close. I found most pups pick it up in a very short time but training to the fence is very important. You just can't put the collar on the dog, throw them out and expect they will understand when the fence corrects them. I have put all of my pups on the fence and it has worked out great. Took 2-3 weeks for the full training but it was so worth the time and effort. My pups are so used to the fence that they never go near it anymore and they have never ever tried to leave the yard. I never let them out if I am not at home and when I do let them run I do keep an eye and ear out for them but for us the fence has been a wonderful thing and the dogs enjoy their yard to the maximum. Oh and just a side note the correction that the fence gives is NOT an electric shock. The fences run on RF frequency and the sensation is more like hitting your funny bone. Not painful but not pleasant either but it is not current flowing into the dog.

Catahoula Leopard Dog > New to Dogster

Katie

Professional ham

Barked: Tue Apr 2, '13 9:20am PST
Hi wave My name is Katie and I am new to Dogster and the newest member of my family. They have been on Dogster for quite a while. My Mom has never had a Catahoula and doesn't know too much about us but she is learning. I am quite the handful but very sweet. She rescued me from a high-kill shelter in Alabama and now I am in the Northeast and loving every minute of it. I share her with my Boxer sister (sometimes very grudgingly) BOL Looking forward to making friends with other Catahoulas and helping Mom to better understand my high energy ways. dog walk

Saying Goodbye: Memorials & Support > Have you looked at your dogs ashes ?

I have the ashes of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Molly. I have looked at all their ashes and I only did it once.... too heartbreaking. I have all three side by side with their collars, bandanas, paw prints, and pictures. I will keep them with me always and when my time comes I want all of them to be placed with me and we will be buried together. I plan on the same for my Radar and Wolf. We all lived together as a family and we will always be together as a family. Somehow having them with me is a comfort, I can touch their boxes and I can still talk to them. I know this is something only other dog lovers can understand.

Your welcome Madison and I look forward to seeing you in the group. I know they were my lifeline when Wyoming was first diagnosed in 2007 with undifferentiated sarcoma and then last March when my Boxer Molly was diagnosed with Mast Cell. Pam our moderator is the best, she is also the woman that started Canine Cancer Awareness after the loss of her Golden named Sierra. I'm sure she will have your post up between now and morning and you will certainly receive a warm welcome and the folks with the oral melanoma experience will certainly reach out to you, myself included. hug

Sending prayers and hope to Ginger. My Mom is part of a group on yahoo called Canine Cancer Comfort. It is a wonderful group of supportive folks with a ton of knowledge on canince cancers. There have been a number of the members whose dogs had oral melanoma and I'm sure they can share their experiences with you and give you good advice. It is also a great place to vent among folks who truly understand. There is also a group called Canine Cancer Awareness.org with a ton of resources. Wyoming, Cheyenne, and Molly are all on their 2012 calendar this year too. Please give the comfort group a shot and check out the awareness group for some great info. We will be thinking of you and sending a ton of healing thoughts your way.

This is just so sad and painful. My heart goes out to Buddy and Smokeys family. I can't even imagine what you are going through right now but know you are all in my thoughts and prayers. If you get a transport together to get Smokey to N.H. I am more than willing to be a part of that. I have one pup that howls and fusses while in the car so I am very used to that. I will be checking back here to see what is happening and if there is anything I can do to help.

Godspeed sweet Buddy you will alwys be our pal little angelhughughughug
