Rescue, Adoption & Happy Endings > Over Pet Population??
Gigi Chalena

My Sunshine!

With 365,349 dogs on Petfinders, and that doesn't even cover all the shelters that do not list their dogs or the amount of dogs that are euthanized every day......I'd say there is an overpopulation.

And if Petfinders list isn't proof enough then join a couple of the Yahoo rescue groups that list hundreds of dogs every day that are on the euth list and look at all of those sad faces and tell me that we don't have an over population of dogs.

Just for the record, most shelters claim that the majority of dogs in shelters are people's pets and not from puppy mills and pet shops. According to them, a great majority of these dogs and puppies are from everyday people that feel that they just have to breed their cute little pet, and give no thought to what will happen to six or twelve or more dogs in a litter. Plus now you have that litter that will breed and so on and so on because not enough people want to be a responsible dog owner and not breed and spay an neuter their pets.

It is time that the average person takes a look at the whole picture and stops putting all the blame just on Puppy Mills and Pet Shops. They are in reality only a small percentage of the real problem. People have to stop breeding their pets and spay and neuter them, as well as shutting down Puppy Mills and preventing Petshops from selling dogs.

Today, there is almost 16,000 chihuahuas on Petfinders alone. Most of them are from people who bred there cute little chi because they saw the movie years ago and just had to breed them. Many are from people who figured that they could make a fast buck since at the time everyone wanted a chi. Now look at the CA shelters who are forced to kill them by the thousands every single month because not enough homes can be found for them.

You hear it all the time....DON'T BREED, DON'T BUY WHILE SHELTER DOGS DIE!! It is disgusting that a country as great as ours can murder soooo
many innocent animals all for the love of money and then deny the cold fact that we the people are to blame.

Small Dogs > Cost of a small 10 (ish) year old chihuahua?

Gigi Chalena

My Sunshine!

Barked: Fri Sep 17, '10 3:59pm PST
I recently adopted a Chi that is about 6-7 yrs old. The previous owner had her for a month and didn't know anything about her, because the person she got her from lied and said she came from a shelter, yet she had no proof that Gigi even had a rabies shot. Shelters, regardless of what state you live in will not release a dog without the rabies shot. So as far as I was concerned, she needed everything, since I could not get any medical records on her.

Anyway, I have been using the ASPCA Vet Mobile for her, which is a lot cheaper then a private vet. To get her teeth cleaned (tomorrow) is 345.00 that includes 3 extractions and the IV. But because of her age she also had to have a full blood panel done, to make sure she could handle the anesthesia. That was 65.00,which included the HW test. Her Booster 20.00, rabies 20.00,checkup 25.00, antibiotic 35.00, spay 75.00, micro chip 25.00, stool and urine 40.00. The blood test came back and showed some Kidney issues which I will discuss with the Vet tomorrow. Plus the cost of the HW meds and the flea meds.

Expensive as this is, it would have cost 2 and 1/2 times more through a private vet. I called 3 vets for a breakdown and each one was a lot more. The things that are being done for Gigi now, should be done for any new dog that you get regardless of their age, or where you get it from. This is a full and complete work-up. After this, unless her kidneys get worse, it is not expensive. Boosters and rabies can be given once every three years.

When I rescued Princess I had a full blood panel done on her too and she was only 1 1/2 yrs old. It is the best way to find out just how healthy a pup or dog is, and what you are headed for.

You can always call any Vet's office and ask for a breakdown on everything a new dog needs. Most are pretty willing to help you out.

Hope this helps

It seems that their are specific Rescue remedies for people and a different one for dogs.

http://www.rescueremedy.com/

bear in mind that motion sickness in dogs can be because the dog actually feels dizzy which would make them vomit. Dramamine in people doesn't always stop the dizziness but does prevent the nausea. So just using a calming remedy may not be enough, and mixing the two may or may not have side effects. Again, I would call your Vet and ask these questions before spending any money on them and using them on your dog.

I had to use 1/2 tablet of 25mg of NON-Drowsy Dramamine a half hour before she goes into the car for Princess for the first year that I had her and I didn't feed her anything, not even a snack. She would get feed once we were home for the night.

Now she is okay even for long drives, (2hrs) but I admit I don't feed her until I get home. It does prevent the vomiting and just make sure that you get the NON drowsy type. Princess weighs 18 pounds so 1/2 tablet is plenty according to her Vet and it suppose to work for up to 12 hours on a dog. I never tested for that length of driving time though. I wouldn't give a dog any more then the recommended amount since all meds settle in their liver and some meds are never fully purified out of the liver.

Verify the dosage with your Vet for your dogs.

BEGGING FOR THIS DOGS LIFE PLEASE PLEASE READ THIS STORY!!!!!!

From: Kristin

Please, please, please cross-post!!

T-Bone's Tail T-Bone's owner is a Marine who was deployed to Iraq in 2008. While he was there, he became ill with cancer and was flown back to the USA for a stem cell transplant. During the time of his deployment and hospitalization, Camp Pendleton instituted a banned breed policy which requires pit bulls currently living on Base to pass the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen test. T-Bone's owner requested an extended waiver from the Base and enrolled him in Basic Obedience, which he passed. However, the AKC course was not held due to lack of sign-ups. T-Bone’s owner then took T-Bone to drop-in classes in hopes of passing the test before the extended waiver expired. T-Bone was ONE command (stay), away from passing, but was impounded by Camp Pendleton ’s Animal Control on the last day of the waiver, because he had not passed the “stay” command. T-Bone is best friends with his buddy Paco, the Chihuahua and is wonderful with
the children in his family – ages ranging from newborn to teenagers, but has had very limited exposure to cats and other small animals beside Paco. He loves to play and run and is a very athletic pup. Time is running out for this sweet, loving dog and we are desperately looking for a family that can rescue him from Camp Pendleton ’s Kill shelter… either permanently, or as a foster until his current owner separates from the Military in the Spring. Arrangements have been made for T-Bone to continue working with a trainer, so that he can master that last Good Citizen command. If you, or anyone you know could possibly help this family and this wonderful dog, please contact: Lynne M. Van Trieste, MBA, Ed.D. Recovery Care Coordinator Wounded Warrior Battalion - West Bldg. 49 Santa Margarita Road Camp Pendleton, CA 92055 619-952-9837 Thank you!

Small Dogs > small dogs don't play

Gigi Chalena

My Sunshine!

Barked: Fri Aug 20, '10 8:02pm PST
Well I have only had Gigi for a month and she doesn't play at all, nor does she play with toys. Who ever had her before made her into a stuffed doggie because all she wants is to be held and hugged and belly rubbed.
Actually, I think it is starting to irritate Princess because Princess always wants to tug and run and wrestle. She will bark at Gigi trying to get some spark out of her and Gigi just looks at her and goes to her bed, the little Diva!

I think it has a lot to do with the way a dog is raised and socialized with people and other dogs while it is still young. Gigi is 6-7 years old so she may never change. Princess was about a year old and had a lot of puppy in her when I rescued her, so she was easier to train and teach her how to play.

You do good work, all the drawings are adorable. I especially like the way you put life into their eyes.

I would love a drawing too! I can never get a shot of both Princess and Gigi together. So if you could do them together some how, I would really appreciate it. When Gigi is standing her head reaches Princess's belly, that's how tiny she is. Princess is small too, only 18 pounds. I'll leave it up to you.
