Choosing the Right Dog > Suspicious Breeder Has an "I am A Responsible Breeder" Article on Dogster Mag

I'm shocked at Dogster for publishing this without even any sort of disclaimer. Seriously? Do the powers at Dogster HQ actually believe this fellow to be an "ethical breeder"? The editors of a website that specializes in dogs?? Their publication of this does seem like an endorsement of this breeder.

...Who is, of course, just a BYB. He sort of knows how to talk the talk of a responsible breeder, but not walk the walk. He's counting on it that people will take his word for everything. Like that he has great and nice dogs, although he's got no kind of outside evaluations to prove that, not to mention titled or working dogs. And as for health testing, apparently he's willing to out-and-out lie about that, as he hasn't done any (including OFA) but claims he does.

I'd like to believe he's sincere about the return clause at least, and paying for return shipping if needed, but I'm sort of doubting it as his credibility went out the window with the lying about health clearances.

What's scary and so sad, though, is that he'll probably have no trouble selling all the puppies from two planned fall litters at $1500 per puppy. People don't know how to research and evaluate a breeder, it's confusing at best, and then add to that breeders (like this one) who are willing to deceive in the name of marketing. A breeder who actually has the nerve to write an article trumpeting himself as some pinnacle of ethics, while he either has no understanding of what that actually means, or else he knows he isn't, but is willing to go that far for his ego and greed.

This guy is assuming that puppy buyers are going to be ignorant enough to fall for all his baloney. The sad thing is that he's probably right. Look how many supportive, positive comments this article got. And to think that's on Dogster, where you'd expect to find a slightly more-informed audience than the general public.

We have...as Tiller said to me...such a long way to go when it comes to education about responsible breeding.

There are quite a few themes depicted and glorified in that music/video/etc that "we" might consider objectionable.

Cop killing? Check. Gang-related violence? Check. Intoxication, with alcohol and/or illegal substances? Objectification and degradation of women?

Industry capitalizes on all of it because the concern of business is what sells.

Would you censor all of it, or only the pit bull imagery because that's what offends you as a dog lover?

"There is no reason why an inner city Pit Bull should be any less of a social concern than a puppy mill breeder. Maybe even more, as they permeate an entire culture, are connected with gangs, drugs, human lives of promise turned to waste. It is a mess."

I will have to say this softly because this is Dogster, and this is a bit political. But there perhaps you have scratched the surface of the answer to the "pit bull problem" - dog fighting primarily, but all the rest too.

Michael Vick notwithstanding, people who feel alienated from the mainstream are going to care far less what the mainstream thinks about what they do. There are social injustices and wounds that won't heal in this country. When the mainstream holds no promise or future for those kids to which you refer, they continue on with that "mess" of gangs and drugs and pit bull abuse.

Sometimes I really do think that dog people could just stop for a moment and care about humans for one second. That might help. I'm just sayin'. Maybe if you fix what's wrong with that culture, you fix the pit bull problem. It's not about signing petitions or trying to censor hip-hop lyrics or videos. Those are just a reflection of the reality that is. I'm talking about working as a society to a more positive place and having something real to offer, actually caring about people that seem so "apart."

Though your Boudreauxes and the stuff in Louisiana is a whole 'nother matter. That has nothing to do with disenfranchised people and hopelessness. There, I guess yeah, just try and strengthen the laws -- and just TRY to get them to actually stick in spite of corruption and so forth, but good luck.

This is my current favorite "designer" dog. He really looks like a Golden Retriever mixed with a Dachshund!

For anyone interested, he is currently available for adoption at the St Tammany Parish, Louisiana, animal control shelter. Please p-mail me if you'd like their contact info!!

ETA: I don't know why the picture came out so blurry on his profile here! There's a much better (clearer) version of it on PetHarbor.com. Strange cross but so cute!

Cobain, I agree with you! Many of those that purchased from pet stores will justify it as a "rescue" in order to rationalize it away. Just to make themselves feel better and look better, though they do know they did their part to perpetuate an evil system of puppy mills.

Tiller, as you know but I will follow up by posting here, I'm fully with you on the concept of breeder licensing. The sticky thing is who gets to make the rules! in an industry that tends to resist any sort of regulation. And then again, I agree that an anti-mill organization offering a "gold seal of approval" could be at least something. So I agree with your own stated end goals, but not with your assessment about how I (or anyone) comes to be a hardliner on buying petstore puppies. As I mentioned, I'm more romantic about breeders than anyone out there, given that in my Utopia (the vision shared with many in animal welfare), there would be NO OTHER SOURCE for dogs, besides responsible breeders. The transformation of the entire world of dogs - the ridding of all the scourges from puppy mills, to the shelter crisis, to indeed most abuse and dog fighting and so forth - all could be accomplished only by finally abolishing all the bad breeders, and there remaining only the responsible breeders, who would be the protectors and champions of their dogs, their progeny, and the species as a whole.blue dog

hughug Mika & Kai, it's such a deep quandary. At this stage I am convinced that more than half the market for puppy mills and pet stores is people truly believing they are saving or rescuing the puppy or buying it out of pity. If only they could see the big picture.
