Geez, it's usually only on the weekends that the guests come out of the woodwork to resurrect long-dead threads. -_-

Dog Health > Yikes, a new lump on Jasper!

Well I feel sheepish! Jasper had a rabies vaccine a couple of weeks ago and the little nodule is where the vaccine was given. It will go away on its own. Ah well, better safe than sorry.

Dog Health > Yikes, a new lump on Jasper!

I was petting Jasper last night and I felt something on the outside of his right thigh that wasn't right. Sure enough, it felt different than the left thigh.

It took me a few minutes to isolate the lump because it's so small (not quite pea-sized), but I did eventually find it. It is beneath the skin, and mobile, but feels different from most lipomas I've felt. Maybe that's just because it's so small? Hopefully that's the case and it's just another lipoma. He's got one the size of a quarter over his ribcage, I've been waiting for his next dental cleaning to have it removed.

We're headed to the vet in a few hours for a biopsy. Send us some good vibes for something nice and harmless please!

Dog Health > Okay, incontinence. What now?

BOL, how many older female dogs have you known?? Star lived to sixteen and was never incontinent.

As a vet tech, I saw a LOT of older female dogs on a daily basis...and I only ever recall discussing incontinence three times. It's not the sort of things owners keep to themselves.

Libby, I'm glad the new drug seems to be helping. Incontinence is no fun for anyone, that's for sure! Hopefully she'll be back to 100% soon!

Behavior & Training > Would a wolfdog at a dog park be a cause for concern?

Jasper

There is a man in my area who used to bring his three wolf hybrids to one of the dog parks. The lack of a federally approved rabies vaccine made me VERY nervous, as did their tendency to eye the dogs on the small dog side like they were prey.

I don't know exactly what happened, but the man acquired a fourth (!!) wolf hybrid and was permanently kicked out shortly after. He walks his pets by the park several times an evening, and the four of them definitely are not dogs. They don't carry themselves like dogs, they don't act like dogs, and while I'm certain that most of the wild rumors about these four that I've heard are just that (rumors), it appears that they are not safe in the park and will gang up on a dog and chase it down.

I LOVE these four. The tallest male is one of the most beautiful animals I've ever had the privilege of touching. He is spectacular....and I would NOT let Jasper interact with him, however closely supervised.

Dog Health > Jasper swallowed a bird

So....I spent the evening watching two cute little sparrows learning to fly on our balcony. Later, someone opened the door and Jasper popped out and swallowed one.

Do I need to keep an eye out for any parasites or anything else from this?

Right now I'm really down, I was so happy watching those little birds all evening. I'm also having a hard time not being angry at the person who opened the balcony door. Grr.

Jasper liked it and did well on it when we added it to his rotation. I think it smells nice too...almost like peanut butter.

Choosing the Right Dog > Suspicious Breeder Has an "I am A Responsible Breeder" Article on Dogster Mag

Uggggh, I am so embarrassed to have been taken in at first by this guy. It makes me really REALLY worry about finding the right breeder for my next dog. frown When my search starts in earnest, I hope dogsters aren't too annoyed by my relentless questions, as I'm seriously questioning my ability to find an excellent breeder on my own. frown

Food & Nutrition > Will it hurt my dog to eat low quality foods once in awhile?

Jasper

My grandma keeps a bag of Kibbles N' Bits *twitch* dog food at her house to give as a treat to Jasper when he visits. I don't mind too much, because she loves him and means well, and he does not suffer from allergies.

That said, if it was a case of someone actively disregarding my wishes about my dog's diet, you bet I'd be peeved. I know roommate situations can be tricky, and keeping the peace is vitally important, so I'm honestly not sure how I'd approach it. I would probably say "I'm trying to find out if he is itchy due to a grain allergy, (whether he was itchy or not) can you please give him only these treats for awhile so I can figure it out?" and give her a bag of high quality treats. Then I would "discover" after a few weeks of research that he IS grain sensitive, and keep my roommate supplied with treats.

My store hands out a lot of high end dog food samples, I've brought these to my grandma to use as dog treats before.

Dog Health > Has anyone here used Rimadyl for arthritis?
Jasper

High-flyin' Pup!

Barked: Thu May 23, '13 12:31am PST
If you do start your dog on Rimadyl do it on a weekday when you or someone you trust will be around for most of the day.

I was going to start Jasper on Rimadyl, and made the serious mistake of giving him his first pill on a Sunday. He had such profuse vomiting and diarrhea that I was brought back to the months we spent trying to treat his persistent giardia.

I now start any new medication on a day when my regular vet is OPEN, as the trip to the e-vet cost me $600. Not that I mind spending the money if he needs it, but I have Mondays off and should have given it the next morning so that I could have seen his regular doctor if there was a problem.

Many dogs don't have a problem with rimadyl, but some dogs' GI tracts just can't handle it. Jasper takes Previcox now on an as-needed basis, and his stomach is fine with it.shhshh
