Don't think I'd ever even heard of a Portuguese Pointer. Interesting looking dog!
I will mention the Lab to him. I do think he'll be better about exercising the dog(s) after the move when he's no longer living in such a cold climate. If he moves and still doesn't get out much with his current dog, I'll make more of a push to get him to consider a lower energy breed than the GSP.

I mean, yeah people like that often don't learn and do often end up getting another dog, but you really have to wonder when it's only a few days after giving away the last one. At least if it's been several months you figure they forgot all the "bad" parts of owning a dog and only remembered it as being good, but in this instance And then they're already annoyed with the new one? You'd think they'd at least have a little shame about making their last dog someone else's responsibility
Sounds like Polly is fitting in great though! Finally getting the attention she deserves

I had the same thought about more variety, but I've heard they're basically just small chickens, so I don't know how different the meat really is from regular chicken. The different size/shape might be fun for the dogs though.

It's mostly things like punishing the dog for digging in the trash, even when it's long after the fact, and he repeatedly leaves the can where the dog can get into it. I'm trying to gently work on him with that.
I can run Poodles by him, but I can't see him getting on board with that idea. He seems to gravitate toward the sleeker dogs, and while we all know looks shouldn't be the only factor taken into consideration when getting a dog, I know it is going to play a big part for him. I had wondered about Labs. Every time I look at Quincy's pictures it makes me want one Hadn't considered Springers or Cockers, although it sounds like those may be a bit high on energy? I would of course help with exercise, but no guarantee I'll always be in the picture. (Hey, just being realistic!)
If the GSP is a solid choice, I probably won't try too hard to convince him to go with something else. Especially because I really like the look of the breeder you mentioned a while back, Tiller. Although convincing him that it is worth it to spend $1500 on a well bred dog may be a bit of a battle!

He's decided he wants a GSP, but when I asked him why he'd chosen that breed, it was basically that he'd seen one and liked it. As a kid, he had an English Pointer his father bought as a bird dog, but it sounds like the dog became mostly just a pet. Besides that, I don't think he actually has a lot of experience bird hunting with a dog (he does have hunting experience though).
From what I've read of them, I don't think a GSP would be a bad choice, but I'm wondering what others think. He's not really the kind of dog owner most Dogsters are (ie, his life doesn't revolve around his dog), but his dog does live in the house, sleep in his room, and is otherwise a member of the family. He can be pretty lax with exercising his current dog and I've mentioned to him several times that if he got a GSP he'd need to be more dedicated on that front.
I'm thinking a good breed for him would be something easily trained, not too sensitive (I feel some of his corrections are unwarranted/overdone), and a dog with the drive for birds, but nothing too over the top- a beginner's bird dog. Suggestions?

I order all my whole prey from RodentPro (mice, rats, chicks, quail, rabbit, and guinea pig), but I know not everyone can bulk order online. Might be able to check with reptile people and see if there are any sources for more prey in your area.
Nice thing about kittens is they're generally much easier to switch to raw than most adult cats who can be extremely resistant to switching. Do introduce as many different things as you can at a young age to avoid pickiness, even if you end up doing half raw.
