Choosing the Right Dog > Suspicious Breeder Has an "I am A Responsible Breeder" Article on Dogster Mag

And at first glance, for someone who doesn't know how to properly identify a responsible breeder, this guy sounds decent. You have to be able to know what things to look for before you start to question him.
I for one am still learning how to identify a responsible breeder. Sometimes it's obvious that a breeder is bad, sometimes it's not. It can get confusing for somebody who has had no experience with purchasing from a breeder, no experience in handling a purebred, no idea what to look for in a certain breed...etc...
It's especially confusing when different breeds require different tests, titles, or whatever... I'm interested in Saluki's, but have become frustrated with the breeders and the ethics surrounding purchasing a pup from one of them. So much so that I think I'll go the rescue route when it comes time for me to get my Saluki(years from now).

tornado survivor finds her dog
A friend on facebook said a little girl was reunited with her parents, but I don't have a link for that one...hopefully there will be many more happy reunions in the days to come... I don't know these people, but hearing of the rising deaths is emotionally draining...
Some more good news my brother who lives in Edmond is safe.
Tyler - I think that would depend on the city and state you were vacationing in, and then it depends on the hotel.... in my town of Lebanon, MO, there's not really any safe place if you don't have your own tornado shelter. Many restaurants will evacuate everyone into the freezer if it's a walk in. Malls are usually equipped with tornado shelters...can't really think of more places it would be safe to go... When I worked at Walmart, we would have people rush in because it would be safer there than in their mobile homes, and we had a designated "safe" area, but if a massive tornado hit it head on, the entire store would be demolished....just like in Joplin, MO....
I don't think there is any excuse for not building new homes in tornado prone areas with a concrete shelter...history has proven the necessity of this! It's horrible that people have to make the decision to either drive to a "safe" place in the middle of a storm or weather the storm in their closet or bathroom, and as Sanka said, trusting a bathroom to save you isn't comforting.

| Barked: Mon May 20, '13 5:33pm PST | | | | | Wow... Moore again... When I lived in OKC, I student taught at a school in Moore. One of the 4th graders was a survivor of the May 3rd tornado, he and his family survived by hiding in a closet, their house was half destroyed. One of the days when I was in his classroom there was a thunderstorm, and the boy was terrified half out of his mind, he had to leave the class and wait in the office where it was quieter. I think he had PTSD.
When it comes to tornadoes, especially the massive ones, I wonder why every home in "tornado alley" doesn't have a concrete shelter... sometimes not even a basement is good enough... Too bad they're so expensive to put in. I looked into them for our house in Missouri, but I couldn't afford it.
But a school, in a tornado prone area....they should be required to have a proper shelter built into the school somehow...I don't know how, but they should...75 kids missing...

Liked all the photos! Good catch with the Heron!
Well, it's official, we've got a signed and sealed (chopped/stamped/whatever) contract and are planning on starting to clean the new place this weekend and start moving things in! If all goes well, I can bring Tasha up in maybe two weeks!
We did find a major problem...there isn't any water on the 3rd floor(where my room will be) and the 2nd floor is iffy... But at least the 1st floor has water! They think a line is blocked, so we're going to hire somebody to check it out and hopefully get it fixed. We decided to go ahead with this place because he just haven't been able to find a place we like and can afford... so we'll just deal with the problem.
I'm at my parents house this week, I have to renew my ARC and driver's license, which is best to do at the place I originally had them done the first time(less hassle), so I'm back for this week. Had some drama, too. Drove down Sunday and this morning was getting all my legal paperwork ready to go to the foreign affairs office and realized I had left my passport at my place! There is no way to get the ARC renewed without it, so my dad and I hopped on a train for the 3 hour trip back to my place, grab my passport off my desk, and hop back on the train for another 3 hours back. It was a long day.
Well, hopefully I've used up my bad luck and all will go smoothly tomorrow!
Have a good day, all! | | | | |

It is crazy how common his coloring and body shape is... I didn't realize this until after I started looking at "found dog" ads... And to top it off, there is a dog that hangs around my college campus that also looks very similar to him!

Choosing the Right Dog > Ever "misjudged" a breed?
Natasha - 美花- ~Beautiful- Flower~
Let's play tag!- You're it! |
| Barked: Tue May 14, '13 9:22pm PST | | | | | I'm sure I've misjudged several breeds, but that's probably due to not having ever met a well bred or well trained example of the breed. Two that come to mind are the Pomeranian and the Chihuahua. I've only ever met the ones that are extremely high strung, yappy, and nippy. Right now I have a neighbor whose Chihuahua barks at anything and everything, constantly. It's extremely annoying and I think to myself "argh, a yappy ankle biter Chihuahua" but I do know he's just not trained or socialized(the neighborhood dogs always steer clear of him because he just barks in their faces when they come over). It's difficult not to judge the breed as a whole when all I've ever met are like that. | | | | |

I enjoyed all the photos!! Especially puppy pics!!
Happy birthday Bunny!
There was some issue with the rental agreement for the new place...they want us to sign a five year contract!! After a lot of back and forth badgering, we agreed to a two year contract. We are going to look at the new revised contract this weekend, if they try to sneak in the five year thing, we're going to back out and look for a different place. *sigh* This sort of thing has happened to my dad in years past, the people assume since he's a foreigner, he can't read Chinese(it's common for foreigners to be able to speak, but not read Chinese), especially legalese, so they try to sneak things into the contracts. So much drama... But, it has cemented my resolve to learn to both read and speak the language, it'll take me a long time because I'm a slow learner, but I can't wait until I can read the language with ease(or at least without having to resort to a dictionary every other word)!
The 17th is the last day of class for this semester and for my final in one of the classes I have to do a power point presentation...which is difficult since I don't have that program on my computer! Hopefully I'll figure something out...
My birthday is coming up so I decided to skip out on that one day of class and go home to visit my parents (and my Tasha and Alvin!). I got permission to bring Alvin back with me when I return! Too bad Tasha has to wait another month.

Is he still behaving this way? Maybe check for a high pitched noise or buzzing sound. Sometimes strange noises freak dogs out, especially if they can't pin point it and it's high pitched, hurting their ears.

Puppy Place > Feeling guilty about socializing?

| Barked: Wed May 1, '13 11:21pm PST | | | | | Personally, I would continue the socialization and start the puppy class. In my uneducated, non vet opinion, keeping a pup cooped up in isolation during its formative weeks doesn't sound like a good start in life. However, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the symptoms of Parvo and keep a close eye on your pup. | | | | |

| Barked: Wed Apr 24, '13 10:03pm PST | | | | | Chicks! Today on my way to school, I was waiting at a red light and what do you think the vendor there was selling? Ducklings!!!! It took all of my willpower to continue driving when the light turned green. So cute and yellow and fuzzy.... Maybe if he's still there when I go back home I'll get a photo.
Yes, Tasha and Alvin will get to live with me when I move, I'm excited about that! Just two more months. Maybe less, we might be signing the lease for the new place before our current lease is up, that way we can move at our leisure and clean the new place and get packed/unpacked a little at a time, instead of all in one or two days. Today the air conditioning guys are coming over to look at our air conditioning units and give an estimate of how much it'll cost to take them out and install them in the new place. We have two large ones and three little ones, so it might be a little pricy.
That's sad about Harley, I really like him, he's the type of dog I like when it comes to mutts. Hopefully he will find a new home soon and the tension will ease up at your place.
Well, gotta go. I hope everyone has a great day!
