Going by those measures, he's definitely 24-24 1/2. I measured low. I'm glad he seems on pace with other males, and it's good to know an upset stomach won't set him back. I will certainly post some additional pics when I get my computer back. He is a beautiful boy and yes, he had stolen my heart. I can't really picture having another breed of large dog ever again. I'm hooked on his personality, not being "needy" (if that is the right word) as some other breeds I've encountered, and I live his devotion to us. Thanks for all the info and encouraging words. If I have any questions I will certainly contact you!

Akita > Question About Size/Weight

Thanks! All is well now with Koda. He's eating normally again and has regained much of the weight he lost last week. I think he'll be back over 60 by his 6 month mark. He just looks better, though not at his ideal weight yet. I'm going to check on the foods, especially when he switches to adult food. With every passing month I'm curious as to what his adult weight will be. He is about 23 inches at the top of his shoulder, so I'm guessing as a full grown male he will be between 26-28. Weight...I just don't know. I was thinking 120. We will see. I enjoy watching him grow!!

Yes! Thank you! He has actually had some stomach problems the last week and dropped some weight. We took him to the vet...food issues. He's on a bland diet for a few days, so I expect his weight to be put back on quickly considering the amounts he eats. He had a beautiful, shiny coat, is active, and happy. The vet complimented him saying that he is an excellent dog...though he did not like the tech, whom he'd never met, being so close to our daughter. He went, and in true Akita fashion, laid right in front of her, alert. He is a good, friendly, healthy, happy, boy. We just have to get him on the right food!

Please chime in if you can! Koda is about 10 days shy of 6 months. At that point he will weight about 64 lbs. I do however feel as if he is a little thin. Do they go through those "teenage years" where their body/legs are long and they are really lean? Is 64lbs too small? He eats between 6-7 cups of food a day (fed 3x a day, clearly not all at once) which is more than his weight/energy tequirements suggest. Is he just growing fast while his body is having to catch up? Side note: all shots/deworming/tests are UTD. I think he feels thin, but the vet keeps telling me what a big boy he is and how he's going to be huge full grown. Your thoughts? Did your Akitad go through this growth spurt stage?

Thank you!

They are going well! Potty training is MUCH easier with him than it was with Bear, so that was a nice relief. He has plenty of energy, therefore needs exercise, which has been great for me to conclude my evening with a 1-2 mile walk! We are doing our best to socialize him, he's met around 20-25 new people in the 2 weeks we've had him. Some have come to our house, others have been on walks or in public. He's met several other dogs besides Bear, and does well upon introduction to them. He is not aggressive with Bear, he just acts like any puppy would, though I always walk him for a while before they interact in order to calm him down a bit, since he does get rambunctious! So we are still working on gentle play with the two dogs, but I feel as if it is going very smoothly. Especially for it being the first two weeks.

We met up with another Akita owner, who upon meeting him, said how amazed she was at his temperment. We play with his paws, are around him while he eats, and have worked on several commands: heel, sit, stay, come, and leave it. He has most of them down pretty good. He is FANTASTIC with out daughter. He caught on really quick that it was not ok to jump on her, or anyone for that matter, and is very gentle with her, even for a puppy. Although for a nearly 3 year old, she is VERY good and respectful to animals. If he grabs one of her toys, she firmly tells him no, then takes it from him. He listens, and gives her the toy back.

He does have the traditional Akita temperment. He is alert: attentive while I'm walking him, often seeing people I don't, and stopping to see what their next move is. He is cautious around strangers, but as soon as I pet him and tell him "it's ok" he is fine, his tail is wagging, and he's ready for some TLC!

We tend to get a lot of, "What kind of dog is that? He is beautiful!" and "His paws are huge!" I also find that people think he is older than he is due to his size. He is an excellent addition to our family, and I have fallen in love with the breed. I like that he's not an "in your face" kind of puppy, and has some need for independence. I can tell he will be our protector, especially my daughter and myself. But once he meets you for the first time, he considers you a friend. I think that's a good start for only having him two weeks now!

Thanks for all the info. They have been socialized with adults and kids as well as dogs. We met him and he isn't nervous in new places or around us. He was very laid back, attentive to his surroundings, and enjoyed me holding him! He seemed well socialized and didn't signal any red flags for us; and I've researched a lot lol. He's had his 3rd round of shots, today actually, and weighs 20.4 lbs. according to the adult weight calculator on dogster he will weigh about 118 lbs. I can't wait to upload a photo. I can't right now. But if you have any more tips this week, please share! It's earlier than we expected but I'm sooooo excited to have him home!

This has been such a hectic journey. The dog miscarried. But every time a door closes a window opens. We found another breeder who owns both the mom and dad, sent me pics of both. I met the pups TODAY and we pick up our baby NEXT Saturday! He will be 10 weeks old, has all his shots/deworming, has his own "puppy folder", and is loved a lot! I'm so excited! now the name...we are undecided. But he is EXACTLY the color of pup we would have picked if we could and his personality fits with our family wonderfully. Yay! Now to buy the necesseities! I have a pic but cant load it right now.

Well happy birthday to Kai. smile Yes, the waiting game stinks, but will be sooo worth it! We have our home "toddler proofed" and with Bear, I sometimes forget he is almost 8 because he gets into things as if he were a puppy. We are careful about what we leave out, and we keep our home tidy. I think the biggest challenge will be the Christmas tree! That's intriguing for a 3 year old, an adult Pom, I can only imagine a puppy! But it will work! I'll be sure to upload a pic when I can and let all of you who have been so helpful know when our new little guy is born!

So...it's less than a month away before our puppy is born! I'm so excited!

The timing couldn't be more perfect. We will get the puppy at a little over 8 weeks of age, and it will be right when I go on Christmas Break for work. So my husband, daughter, and I will be at home with the new pup for two weeks straight working on some basic training while enjoying our time off as a family. I think this will be a great bonding time! Plus, before we get the pup 1) I can be there when they are born and 2) I can go over, visit, and interact with the pups on a regular basis. I think this will be a great way in helping us get to know the pups' personalities and assist us in choosing the right one for our family.

YAY FOR A NEW FAMILY MEMBER!!!dancing
