Choosing the Right Dog > Miniature American Shepherd/mini aussie

I am constantly asked if my trio are minis...nope - all Aussies. Sadly people are so used to overdone dogs that even my 19.5" bitch is regularly referred to as tiny (which in turn makes my 18" male look like a baby.

I don't think the neutering will change him unless you make it change him - most dogs keep their drive just fine...they only gain weight as feedings aren't decreased accordingly. I mean I spayed my girl about a month ago and she is already down about 1/4 pound in raw. I expect to see her equal out when hormones mellow out.
Yay for cross country trips with dogs

Sports & Agility > Funny obedience/agility stories

Tunnel Suckin' |
| Barked: Fri Apr 26, '13 1:32pm PST | | | | | Oh my...I am deep in stories due to my wonderful Mags!
She has had zoomies in every single venue we have competed in (rally, obedience, and agility). Her first rally zoomie was during our 2nd foray into Excellent (so she was plenty used to being off leash in the rally ring) - we were about halfway through the course when we were doing a left pivot and the next thing I know Maggie bolted during the next bit of heeling, she picked up a cone and bounced around the ring play bowing at the judge and me. We still managed a Q (with a lower score), but it was super cute!
In Maggie's second ever long down in obedience it was at an outdoor trial. Well Mags was enjoying the sunshine a bit much and decided to give into the urge to roll. She stayed in her down, but somehow managed to move forward about 5 feet while rolling around. None of the other dogs were close enough to her for her to disturb them (we were on the edge).
Maggie also had the cutest recall in our last foray into the obedience ring. She came flying out of her sit and ran up to me, didn't sit, and then backed up 6 feet and sat. I was laughing pretty hard and the judge was definitely smirking.
Agility has had plenty of silly things. Maggie is a zoomer if I don't give her a job before her first run of the day. She also has jumped over tunnels, picked up cones, rolled while in a down at the start line, pooped on course, and even hacked up a cookie on the teeter. She also has had some silly gamble accomplishments by "out"ing too far lol!

Raw Food Diet > Dewormer and poop?...

| Barked: Tue Apr 16, '13 10:38pm PST | | | | | Tika had a heck of a time with the dewormer. Very gassy and needing out with diarrhea every few hours. I kept her hydrated, which in turn caused her to have to pee more lol! But she never once changed her attitude and was just as bouncy as ever. She solidified up after 48 hours or so, if it lasted to day 4 we were instructed to head back to the vet. | | | | |

Behavior & Training > When you accidentally hurt your dog..

| Barked: Sat Apr 13, '13 6:45pm PST | | | | | Not even two days I kicked one of those "egg" squeaky toys into Tika's face and it caused her to scream. I swear dogs love to be in the accidental line of fire.
I have shut Maggie's bad foot in the car door at least twice, I also used to have tie Mags to my bed and there were any number of accidents involving me and the leash. I dropped a fence on Porter. I hit a foster dog in the face with a shovel when he appeared out of nowhere. I have pinched all the dogs any number of times. Ugh.

Behavior & Training > How do I raise my puppy to be the dog I've been dreaming of?

| Barked: Sat Apr 13, '13 12:25pm PST | | | | | Do lots and lot and lots and lots of play-training. Everything I did with Tika was play driven and nothing was trained with lots of reps and precision - I kept everything fun and fast paced, lots of shaping things as puppies are such fun blank slates.
I took her to a ton of fun places and I let her learn to play with other people. I did body awareness games and lots of work on impulse control. I did very little training that lasted more than 5 minutes. I didn't work duration until she was older as I wanted everything we did to be fun and leave her coming back wanting more.

Puppy Place > What to pack, picking up puppy.
Maggie,- Tika, &- Porter
Aussie-tastic- Trio |
| Barked: Thu Apr 4, '13 2:04pm PST | | | | | I packed like I would for a normal trip with my dogs. My girl had a 5 hour trip to where I met her, then the next day another 12 hour trip to my house - so she had a fair amount of traveling. I packed a crate into the back of the SUV was all I did differently. I brought my other two as well. I had a passenger, but she was a teenager and only used for snagging drinks and paying for gas at stops lol! I stopped more on the way home than normal (it is normally a 4 stop trip), but figured it was good for the three dogs to walk around together (although potty breaks were given individually to the pup).
I always bring extra towels when I am in the car with the dogs for more than a 2 hour trip. I buy a cheap bag (10-15 large towels) from Goodwill, or the other local second hand store, for $5 and then don't mind if I have to throw them away during the trip due to bodily fluids - nobody wants to deal with that in a car! I also bring extra water to help with a wipe down if needed.

Sports & Agility > Showing too early in agility

Mine? |
| Barked: Thu Apr 4, '13 1:27pm PST | | | | | As I mentioned in my last post on this thread, I started trialing Tika early. She did a NADAC Beginners Agility at only a year and two weeks. She also had been in the ring for Sub-Novice Obedience and Novice Rally at exactly a year old...so I knew that she could maintain focus on me. She had just (I mean just!) been introduced to an A-frame, but already had a 2o/2o contact. I wasn't worried about a Q - I was working with her on being in a big open ring with only me and the judge.
When Tika's first trial came around at almost 16 months I wasn't sure what to expect in the ring. We had only done full courses (10+ obstacles) a handful of times - but I chose runs where I knew I could make a course easy or workable for her. She Q'd in 4/4 runs that weekend and ran very happy.
Come the end of January for her second trial she did great. But by mid-February all of a sudden I saw troubles...she had a fall off the dogwalk at a funday (back in December) and then started avoiding jumps and not following body cues. It wasn't until early March that everything fell apart and I saw her lose her confidence. She was bar knocking, crashing tables, running through her contacts, missing weave pole entrances, etc...all the little bad things finally added up and she lost her confidence. Luckily my trainer and I both saw it and I took action. Mid-March she had her last trial until May (she was spayed)...but I immediately began working on drive/motivation. The difference in her between early March and mid month was night and day.
She is currently on an agility break but is learning running contacts and will be going back to basics when we get back to real practice later this month. If I hadn't been aware of her loss of confidence - I would have pushed too hard and probably broke her down.
