A well bred Cocker Spaniel is the first thing that comes to my mind. They can have serious temperament problems though, so finding a really good breeder would be key.

Tiller knows a lot about the breed. Hopefully she'll drop in and give her input on that.

Agreed, Squ'mey. Reading Tiller's posts on that article was like a breath of much needed fresh air.

The breeder does also sell started and finished dogs, but at significantly higher costs, of course. I'll have to check with the SO about exactly how much they did with the English Pointer and what he knows about training bird dogs. If I had to guess, I think the allure of a puppy is going to win out, but I'll speak to him in more depth about it and see where he stands.

The GSP breeder I'm leaning toward doesn't require dogs be returned for training, as far as I'm aware. I'll be sure to double check on that though.

The mentor is a good idea. From what I've heard of this breeder, he's extremely helpful and I imagine would be able to point us in the right direction. Definitely something to look into.

I'm also disappointed in Dogster for posting an article that's basically an advertisement for this guy's kennel. They could have easily published something about reputable breeders (and have, I believe) without it being attached to a subpar kennel.

And yeah, the fact that he's already breeding the first GSDs he's ever owned speaks to how little experience he really has with the breed. It does sound like he's put in more time and effort than your average BYB, but he's still no where near what I'd call a reputable breeder for a variety of reasons.

Baby, yeah, he's about like that. Not horrible to his dog by any means, just a little behind the times in some ways.

Don't think I'd ever even heard of a Portuguese Pointer. Interesting looking dog!

I will mention the Lab to him. I do think he'll be better about exercising the dog(s) after the move when he's no longer living in such a cold climate. If he moves and still doesn't get out much with his current dog, I'll make more of a push to get him to consider a lower energy breed than the GSP.

Wow, that is pretty bad. I mean, yeah people like that often don't learn and do often end up getting another dog, but you really have to wonder when it's only a few days after giving away the last one. At least if it's been several months you figure they forgot all the "bad" parts of owning a dog and only remembered it as being good, but in this instance shrug And then they're already annoyed with the new one? You'd think they'd at least have a little shame about making their last dog someone else's responsibility confused

Sounds like Polly is fitting in great though! Finally getting the attention she deserves puppy

Fish oil and coconut oil are both good for skin and coat. And of course a healthy overall diet goes a long way.

Make sure you're not bathing her too frequently, as that can often make the problem worse.

Reading through the So You Are Confused By Dog Food thread should help answer a lot of your questions about food.

As far as coconut oil, it's fine to feed puppies, but introduce it slowly as it can cause loose stools. Also make sure you don't feed too much; about 1 teaspoon per 10 lbs of your dog's weight.
