I love the look of the Cavalier, but I had heard that their genetic heart defects were almost guaranteed nowadays. I am a little nervous about looking into one silenced.

On the note about Cockers, I grew up with a Springer who was a wonderful dog, and I think they have similar personalities. I had not considered one before, but good suggestion!

Okay, it doesn't have to be exact, but close would be helpful!

I won't be able to even think about purchasing another dog for at least a year or two, but I'd like to get a good idea of a breed early on. Our first two dogs were from rescues and have shown mixed results: Zelda was adopted as an adult and is a wonderful dog, but Charlie was adopted as a pup and turned out to be riddled with temperament and anxiety problems. I would like to raise another dog from a puppy, but I cannot risk getting another Charlie.

To be completely honest, I want my next dog to be "easy". It would be nice to have the opposite of Charlie, who requires constant supervision and can't even play with other dogs. I'd love a dog that can go to doggie day camp, socialize, and play the day away.

I have adored every Golden I've met, and I'd love to find that personality-- in a smaller body. I have no intentions of getting a dog that is past 40-45 pounds. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated-- and again, no need to be exact!

Raw Food Diet > What Parts Of A Rabbit Can She Have?

I'd ask her to keep them whole, fur-on, but maybe eviscerate them (take out intestines). I personally find all the poop-filled intestines to be gross, especially with a small dog that will probably their time to go through it.

Raw Food Diet > 55lb lab mix - going full raw?

You'll want to feed 2-3% of the adult body weight each day, so for a 55-lb dog that would be between 1.1 and 1.6 lbs of food per day. For adult dogs, I recommend feeding just once per day, especially for bone-in items so you can feed a larger item that won't be a choking risk.

When you first start, your typical menu will be very boring: plain, bone-in chicken parts, slowly adding in little bits of other raw food items to adjust. Make sure you read the various guides on this forum to get a good idea of how to start without causing digestive problems.

Raw Food Diet > meat grinder

I have a commercial quality meat grinder that my dad found when clearing out an evicted restaurant, and I've only used it once. I really didn't care for it.

PROS:
+ Ground meals are useful for a handful of situations.
+ Ground meals offer more precise measurements for meals.

CONS:
- Takes away the dental benefits of raw.
- Depletes a few nutrients, so supplementation is needed if it's long term.
- Very messy process, lots of clean up and disinfecting.
- Spreads surface bacteria.
- EXPENSIVE. Mine was free, but worth around $400. Cheaper models cannot grind bones well.

Raw Food Diet > heartworm preventative...yes or no?

We use Sentinel for flea and heartworm prevention.

I know some people are comfortable skipping heartworm preventatives, but I am not. I live in an area that is very muggy and hot in the summer, and I would not take the risk.

However, I do not give the preventative in the cold months. From what I understand, heartworm is only a threat when the temperature remains above 57 degrees.

Raw Food Diet > Ticks. natural remedies?

Just wanted to say that there's a huge difference when looking for remedies to a flea infestation vs just prevention. I tried every natural remedy in the book when my dogs had a full blown infestation, and nothing would work. We ended up having to use a dose of Frontline to kill all the little buggers, and THEN use natural prevention.

As with natural prevention, I've had luck feeding raw garlic and using a mixture of peppermint/clove oil. I find that the neem oil helps to ease the symptoms of fleas, but isn't as strong as some people say.

Raw Food Diet > Knowing how much to feed

Charlie &- Zelda

I've found that depending on the dog, raw can work very well for weight adjustment. I once saw Charlie looking just slightly thicker around the ribs, so I cut his daily percentage from 3% to 2.5% and he was slender again in just a few weeks time. On the other hand, I fed Zelda TRIPLE her daily recommend percentage and she never gained weight.

Anywho, you should be feeding between 2-3% of your dog's adult weight, or the weight you'd like your dog to be. A 75-lb dog would need between 1.5 (1 lb. 8 oz.) and 2.25 (2 lbs. 4 oz.) lbs of food per day. That's IF you're just doing raw though. Adding in kibble or other commercial diets would make that a bit more complicated.

Dog Laws & Legislation > PETA

Charlie

The world is my- food bowl!

PETA doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

They promote vegan diets for pets, and then turn around and say that pets are equivalent to human slaves.

They say we're murderers for farming animals, but they capture animals and put them to sleep in their own facility.

They are against animal testing and pro arson against laboratories, but their vice-president uses a medication only found by animal testing.

It's just a giant hypocrisy. PETA hires celebrities to endorse their "cause" and make it look cool, then takes the money from people who don't know any better, and doesn't do any good with it.

Honestly, Penn and Teller always tells it best:

I am tremendously jealous! I always wanted a find like this, but there aren't many rural people in my area.

Fantastic job keeping that baby from going to waste, and congrats on all the free food!
