Raw Food Diet > Scared, should I have been?
Rocky
If you don't- claim it, it's- mine! |
| Barked: Thu Nov 10, '11 10:43am PST | | | | | It can be scary rocky would actually choke more on whole big boneless pieces but crunch up bony things more carefully. I say big chicken quarters will be ok at least the ones around here are almost 1 lb each. Whole cornish hens or whole chicken, the whole chicken you can split in half and that should warrant some chewing. They will sometimes spit back up into their mouths anything that is too big to go down the throat and then re swallow once its a bit smaller. Raw bones that are as soft like poultry won't splinter so he should be able to get them down ok. Take a deep breath, it will be ok. | | | | |

Raw Food Diet > Hi I'm new here
Rocky
If you don't- claim it, it's- mine! |
| Barked: Tue Oct 18, '11 12:24pm PST | | | | | Chicken and turkey are great starter proteins. You want to eventually introduce some sort of red meat. Tmost readily available for me is pork or beef. Once he is ok eating some red meat I would introduce liver, little pieces and increase gradually. You would be going for 80% meat, 10% bone, 5% liver, and 5% another organ, note that heart is not an organ even though its yummy. No rush though it took us about 2 months before I started feeding organs. Balance over time not in one meal, I try to do weekly to bi-weekly.
You will probably want some bone in every meal to keep things firm.
Sorry about your loss and congrats on your new pup

| Barked: Tue Oct 18, '11 12:01pm PST | | | | | Parson's Terrier?
My friend has a three year old female. Very beautiful, graceful, always alert with soft brown piercing eyes. Decently calm indoors and loves to snuggle up but needs regular exercise because they are high energy. They are good with children and sociable but they a too smart and bold for their own good. lol
I honestly don't think I have seen a dog with such high prey drive. She will take off if not leashed. She comes back but that eventually might be like an hour later.

Raw Food Diet > What cuts/meals do you gorge? +gorge question
Rocky

| Barked: Wed Oct 12, '11 10:08am PST | | | | | Venison trims, frozen in 3lb chunks in gallon sized bags. Beef chuck or round. Pork shoulders, whole rabbit, duck frames, cornish hen. Usually anything that is packaged big enough I will let him work on until he can't anymore. I found that packaging in 3lb chunks is best for us because he can't gorge more than about 2.5lbs. | | | | |

Raw Food Diet > how much does your dog eat?
Rocky
If you don't- claim it, it's- mine! |
| Barked: Mon Oct 10, '11 9:39pm PST | | | | | 1. what breed/s are your dog if known?
Boston Terrier
2. What age and weight?
2yrs 4months, 20-22lbs
3. What activity level? (below, moderate,or above is fine to say, or how many hours of activity daily please)
half hour power walks about 5 times/wk.
20 minute runs in the yard/day (some agility work, soccer, fetch)
1 hour agility class/wk.
Dog park 2-4 hours a week on avg. (good weather he can finish off park with some swimming),
Occasional play dates.
4. How many pounds eaten a day?
About 1 lb maybe a little more
5. Is diet more fatty cuts or more lean cuts overall if you tell?
I have noticed he needs higher fat cuts and good portions of red meat to keep good muscle tone. He does very well on pork. If I can do 1/3pork, 1/3 beef, 1/3 poultry it is ideal for us. Game hen, boneless beef (occasional rib as treat), pork shoulder or rib chunks are staples. Depending on time of year and sales I feed venison trim with rabbit because it has higher amounts of fat. Duck with leaner cuts of beef and I do keep some fat and skin trimmings from people meat in case I need to add some (e.g.he is just working on a full rabbit for the week). I kinda just eyeball everything.
Gorging works well for us, I try to do it once a week, twice sometimes. He does about 2.5lbs on a gorge day.

Raw Food Diet > more water on whole rabbit?
Rocky
If you don't- claim it, it's- mine! |
| Barked: Sun Oct 9, '11 6:16pm PST | | | | | Just a quick question.
I've fed rocky rabbit before and he loves it. I get it seasonally at a good price or when I can afford it since I have to place an order and I like to be able to order larger amounts or multiple items.
I just sourced some for 1.50/lb but it's whole. I think it's awesome since one rabbit is 6-7lbs and that is his weekly total intake of food and it's all balanced! I can put a rabbit down every third week for variety and just let him work on it throughout the week. I forgot how queezy I used to get when I first started raw feeding, it all came back watching him tear apart a whole furred rabbit andthen he ate the intestines and the smell went away...BOl. What I have noticed is that he walks away after only about a lb which is unusual because he can gorge up to 2.5lbs and usually goes for it. Secondly, he goes through almost half a bowl of water after. Weird to me since he barely drinks since on raw. I'm thinking it's the fur. Everything else normal. Just curious to know if there are any similar experiences. Thoughts?

Raw Food Diet > How does raw work in regards to protein allergies?
Rocky
If you don't- claim it, it's- mine! |
| Barked: Sun Oct 9, '11 5:50pm PST | | | | | Hi Mikey. Rocky had bad allergies but they were environmental. I will tell you one thing it sucks to have a dog that is allergic to what seems like everything outdoors when you are an outdoors person. His main issue are grass, and different types of weeds. Although he still gets reactions they are very moderate(a few little hives on his underside) and go away on their own within a few hours. A opposed to the crazy itchies which would turn into staph infections. Benadryl never worked for him.
I am not pro-prescription drugs but I did find that clemastine (an over the counter allergy med) works great for immediate fix-ups. I would check on the dosing for your dogs weight and I gave a dose every twelve hours after the third dose you see great improvement and in three days it is usually under control.
I'd say don't worry too much about sales and variety start with one protein to rule things out and to get the tummy adjusted. Pick up a couple pounds of chicken or pork or whatever meat with edible bone is on sale at a local supermarket for now.

Raw Food Diet > "What kind of dog food do you feed her?"
Rocky
If you don't- claim it, it's- mine! |
| Barked: Fri Oct 7, '11 9:00pm PST | | | | | I am also on the "don't ask, don't tell" side of things. My vet asked the first time I ever brought him in and at that point he was on dog food. About 6 months after I took him in for his 1 year and last set of DHPP and for his 3yr rabies). The vet took a nice look at his skin and commented on how good it looked because we had gone through so much trouble with staph infections, allergies, antibiotics before raw. I just said I changed his diet and it cleared up. She didn't ask to what so I let it go. I was kind of secretly hoping she would though, BOL. Funny how I think I've had more issues recently with my doctors, I am officially labeled non-compliant, because I refuse to take all the band-aids they try to prescribe. SMH | | | | |

Raw Food Diet > A couple more questions!
Rocky
If you don't- claim it, it's- mine! |
| Barked: Fri Oct 7, '11 8:44pm PST | | | | | I would say try feeding large frozen chunks of food. Rocky can swallow a chicken drum in two chomps if thawed but he has to do a lot more chewing if frozen. I've just started feeding him a whole frozen rabbit, fur, organ, head and feet, whole nine yards. He stops after about an hour and I can only think it's because he is tired. It doesn't look like he goets through more than maybe a pound and he can typically gorge 2.5lbs in a sitting. | | | | |
