The song is about a visit Cohen made to Memphis in 1986.
Blue Suede Shoes refers to Carl Perkins who recorded the song first at Sun Records, but was in a car accident that stopped him promoting the song for a while. Elvis's cover recorded in Nashville over took the original especially after Elvis subbed for Perkins on Ed Sullivan. The reference to Union Ave refers to the studio of Sam Phillips owner of Sun Records. Called Memphis Recording Service, it was located at 706 Union Ave. Muriel was Muriel Witkins a pianist and club singer, he met a place about an hour out of town. His real life talk with her, he believed to be a core inspiration for his debut album. While visiting Graceland was something he did, he said in interviews that he almost regretted even mentioning it as he though it would then be passed off as another Elvis tribute because people would focus on that name.
