Ok, first off. Mom just started cooking for me a little over a week ago. I got sick with my legs and could barely move. I felt really bad. I was in so much pain. I shivered to where my whole body was shaking. Mom had to pick me up to take me outside when I would let her without me trying to bite her and hand fed me to make sure I would eat. I did bite her like 5 times and that's not my nature. I stopped eating my dog food and mom knew I had to eat something. She thought I was going to die. Well, she found some chicken and rice and fixed it for me and I gobbled it all up. Mom done some looking on the computer and thinks I may just have arthritus. She went and got me some glucosamine and I've been getting that for not even a week now and yesterday I was running around and playing for a little while. I think that getting homed cooked food has made a difference too. That made my mommy really happy. I still won't jump on the couch or do any jumping. I probably don't need to anyways. Ok, now on to my questions.

1 - Do I need any vitamins or any other supplements with eating home cooked?

2 - Mom read that ground flax seed is good for joints and fish oil. Can us doggies eat the human kind?

3 - How much is a dailey portion for a dog of home cooked?

4 - Well, mom just needs a self help book with home cooking. Or maybe just some recipes that is good for starters from beginning to end.

Thanks for listening and thank you to anypup who helps us.

Well your mommy certainly is doing her homework so we applaud her! applauseapplause We imagine that she also has taken you to the vet to see if there is anything else going on. We do hope you improve and know that you will! We hope we can answer your questions!

1 - Do I need any vitamins or any other supplements with eating home cooked?
-->My suggestion is to try Nupro and there is one that is specific to joints. We have been on Nupro and love love love it! Great supplement and highly recommend it. This will provide you with all the nutrients you need when eating home cooked. And as anything else, you need to slowly incorporate it so your tummy gets acclimated.

2 - Mom read that ground flax seed is good for joints and fish oil. Can us doggies eat the human kind?
-->Yes, typically you should be able to use human grade - it can even be better and less expensive. Just keep to the doses recommended by what is stated from pup grade labelled products. And when in doubt, use a little at a time. Omega 3 is great for the skin and coat. I don't use it. We actually love olive oil leaf extract capsules. A half a capsule every other day. And it also builds up your immunity!

3 - How much is a dailey portion for a dog of home cooked?
-->Ahhhh that is always a popular question. This is my take on it after the many responses. First, give a portion of what you typically feed. Half a cup per meal, one cup per meal, etc. Whatever you were feeding before. After a couple of weeks, is your pup losing weight, gaining weight - you can typically tell after 2 or 3 weeks. Then adjust from there. There is no hard science to it. It depends on breed, activity level, age and medical issues. At the end of the day, you know your pup best!

4 - Well, mom just needs a self help book with home cooking. Or maybe just some recipes that is good for starters from beginning to end.
--->Take a look at the links I have on the group page. It's a great start. We loved Dr. Pitcairn's home cooked book. It can be daunting but then I just used what I felt was appropriate for my situation. If you want a specific recipe, let me know and I'll find one for you. I also bumped many of the Dane Boys recipes to the front page of the group threads because their Mom is a canine nutritionist and created the recipes herself. She had a kick butt chicken salad recipe with berries that i need to find and bump up! It was pawsome!

wave We second the Nupro recommendation. There is a formula called Nupro Joint Support. It works great and pretty fast. If you are taking that, you won't need the flax seed oil. way to go

Hum, where to buy nupro? Thanks for the advise you guys.

I'm going to the vet tomorrow because of the time I became unable to be mobile and in pain, another situation came up with my daddy's parents and they drained mommy and daddy of money. That's why mom did the research on my symptoms and got me 'the stuff'. I am moving and running and playing so much better, just like my old self again.

Please don't think of my parents being bad because I haven't been to the vet yet. They do take really good care of me and love me sooooo much.

Oh that's it! Nupro joint support! Pawsome Sophie! Thanks for the additional input!dancing

We don't judge others or at least we shouldn't, Beans. We know how tough it can be for a variety of reasons as to why you haven't been to a vet yet. Just give us the update and hope you can get some good answers from them! Remember, vets don't wholly support homecooked food unless they are more open to holistic and homeopathic type remedies. So don't despair if they aren't thrilled that you are looking into it.

Nupro is usually sold in holistic pet stores or stores that cater to homecooked and raw diets. However, if you do a search, you can find several online sites that may have better prices!
