Maddie Mae

Bichon's Rule !- ! !

Those who know us have heard me say Maddie is afraid of other dogs. Yesterday my son brought over his Chi. It growled and nipped at Maddie a few times. I finally asked them to take the dog to the car. Later my husband took Maddie for a walk (in the dark). Two dogs ran from a house and attacked them. My husband managed to get them away from Maddie without them hurting her he thought. The problem is Maddie Mae is under the bed and I have to pull her out. She won't come to me and she shakes like she is afraid of me. (Maybe like I didn't protect her?) I have spent the whole day with her, no blood, but one scratch. Each time I walk away from her she runs for the bedroom and goes under the bed.

I can't tell if she is hurting, like bruises? I didn't take her to the vet yet because I didn't want to traumatize her more. I don't know what to do for her.

Poor sweetheart. I wish I had some information to share with you, I'm sure someone on here will. I'm guessing she is probably just scared from what happened and she'll come out from under the bed soon. Ellie Mae has had the same thing happen to her, her problem is she is not afraid of anything.. but she is now leery of any dogs that run towards her;

Be patient with her and watch to see if you notice that she may be hurting in anyway.

We are sending you both some hugs we know you can both use them.hug

yup, what Ellie Mae said...I'm famous for hiding under the bed or under Gram's couch which is only about 4 inches off the floor so that takes some motivation to get under. What works for us is if Momma just acts like everything is normal and I'll get over it in time and I come out.

shock That sounded really bad, Thank God it wasn't worse.
Glad Maddie Mae is OK.
The dog books say to not give to much sympathy to fluffer as it is
reinforcing the behavior. Thats more for Dr. appts. I think.
I sure would just cuddle & try to regain her trust.
Sending you both loving hugs, way to go Shasta & Daisy's mom,Ruth

Thanks "HuMoms, Since Dad is home Maddie has moved to hiding between the couch and loveseat--to be closer? And she did eat her dinner. Yes Ruth, I think I remember Cesar Millan saying that. So when she comes out I act happy (happier) to see her, but otherwise I am just leaving her alone this evening. This is my fault for not socializing her, so I feel bad about that. She is very fearful. A bichon breeder told me she would not be like this with another bichon.

I can understand why Maddie Mae might have been afraid of the dogs she saw, today. They were all behaving aggressively in some way... the barking and growling chihuahua and the charging neighbor dogs!!! That would even frighten my Mommy...and she's a human!!! shockshockshock

Bigtime hugs to Maddie AND her worried, loving Mommy!!!

Poor Maddie Mae! She is scared and does need socialization.
Maybe you can enroll her in a course with other dogs with a trainer just for the purposes of socialization?
Maybe one day consider getting her a big strong boyfriend bichon who has lots of muscles...someone like me!

I have unfortuatly been where you are now only it was with my husky not my little ball of fluff . My husky was attcked about 4 years ago at the vets office by a chow . Now physical harm was done but the mental trauma was soemthign elese After 3 1/2 years we finally found somebody who could help us and lest us know what we were doing wrong and ver since we have being making great stides and he is getting much better. However as far as socializong goes my little ball of fluff needs that big time he is very leary of otehr dogs. So I am looking to enroll him in a doggie day care to get him more scaolized. Just give her time and she will come around.

thinking Thank you all. I didn't realize so many would have a problem like this. Maddie is improving~~ a car ride and a stop for soup at Micky-D's helped a lot. Love for soup conquers most everything. We raked leaves and she stayed outside.

Tucker you are absolutely right. I need a trip to a socializing place. You would be my first choice (Hunka hunka manly protection! Whoo Hooo!) Momma says she is looking for a place to take me to make friends. Sugarbear, could you run over and protect me? You could fly in a half hour . . .

Now that Maddie is showing she will come out of this eventually, my worry has turned to anger. I am trying to find this neighbor home and let them know!

Don't worry Mom will leave her baseball bat home!

We both are thankful for the BLC support! Mom was a little over the top, if you know what I mean and she really needed you guys . . .

hugLove and warm hugs, backatcha,
Maddie Mae and Mom

If mommy knew the names of teh owners of the chow ,it was 2 ladies , she would`ve had a few choice words to say to them. What horrifed mommy anfd grandma both was taht the owners did nothing to help the situation. The pet nurse and grandma took care of things. Geesh people are so bad. When your mommy finds teh owner you should have them come to your house where you can growl and bite tgheir bum. Shwo them what a bichon is made of. GRRRRR to that owner. MAddie Mae you get lots and lots and lots of hugs hughughughughughughug
