Fozzie is almost 10 months and I cannot leave him alone for even 1 minute without him destroying something or looking for trouble. I know he is still in the puppy stage, but was wondering at what age did you all trust your wire alone in the house? What happened the first time? blue dog

It's called separation anxiety and a lot of dogs suffer from it regardles of breed or age. At the top of this page is a gold/yellow Dogster toolbar, click on the fourth item--"Dog Manual". Go to middle of the page and click on Appendix: Common Dog Problems Dog Consumes something Indigestible. Even though that's not Fozzie's problem go further down the page where it shows Chapter 10 Appendix. Scroll down the list and click on Dog Destroys Furnishings. My guess is that Fozzie has a lot of unspent energy and needs more outdoor excercise or toys that will keep him busy until he tires himself our. But be prepared, you may need an animal behaviorist. I learned years ago that having two dogs at once meant that the problem either never arose or if it did, it was one or two occasions. Keep us posted!

I agree 100% that it is probably separation anxiety. When I was a pup I was actually confined to the kitchen when my mom went out...and even though I couldn't do much damage in there... I got pretty lonely and she could tell by my 'screams' when she got home I hadn't been happy.

But I was lucky as it was already in the works to get a baby brother...we just had to wait a few months for him to be born. Now I know two wirehairs in the house can be a handful...but I was so happy when Machu arrived. It was a long drive and I slept with my nose on his little tummy all 5 hours home! I must admit when the folks are gone on long trips -two weeks- or more I still scream when they come home but on a day-to-day basis Machu is good company & keeps me pretty entertained except when he acts like a little brother!

As an energetic puppy, he may also be bored when left alone, as well as the separation anxiety. Safe toys maybe? And change them from time to time. My WFT is good about entertaining himself in the house , but seems to get bored in the kennel, even with his welshie brother in the kennel with him. His welshie brother gets bored in the house and can go on "patrol" and starts pulling things off counters, and running with toilet paper. Exercise and toys to keep him occupied.

One pleasant thing to do for him before you leave would be to give him a Kong with a little peanut butter smeared inside. That would keep him occupied for a while. applause

When I was a pup Mom would leave for work through the garage door. I chewed the trim on the door & chewed the corner of the drywall. I howled & mourned.

After a while I realized she would come back to me, & that she had to work to support the lifestyle that I had become accustomed to! laugh out loud

Thanks everyone for your advice! Fozzie has been getting much better and with more toys and running around the boredom has been cut down. He is great on trips and with other dogs so he is able to go more places and tire himself out. Nothing is cuter than a wire sleeping. little angel

My mommy loves to take me everywhere, but when she can't I still go into the kitchen with my toys and bed. If I am left out then I eat trash, jump on the couch and want to eat that yummy turtle. Sometimes mommy leaves me out, but only if it is for a short time. It took me about 2 years to finally stop chewing things off the counter that I would grab. Good Luck!
