hi, I’m Sookie's mom and I’ve been working on obedience training for her but she just doesn’t seem to want to do anything new...she’s got sit and down but anything else she just barks at me for the treat..I ignore her when she does that but none of the tricks are working......hlepblue dog

Hmm. . .It's always hard to say anything for sure when you read things on the internet, but here goes. When she barks don't ignore it acknowledge that it is not what you want. I snap my fingers at Phantom to get her attention or clap my hands. Whatever works to get Sookie's attention. Also, keep the treats in your pocket or somewhere Sookie can't see them. Hope this helps, if I think of anything else I'll let you know. Keep us posted.

Alright, a lot of ACDs are this stubborn. They tend to get frustrated when they can't figure out how to get what they want from you, so they bark. Sookie's basically saying, "Look, I did what you normally ask me to do, so give me the friggin' treat!".

The way I've dealt with this is simple. Do you have a negative marker? something like "ah" , "eh" , "aht aht" , or just plain "no" will be useful. When she barks at you, just give the negative marker and try to lure her into doing something new. An easier trick to teach, like "turn around/spin" will break the sit/down/stay cycle that a lot of dog owners get trapped in (the cycle that your dog falls into where they lay down as soon as they're told to sit because they're anticipating your predictable command sequence).

Just teach the command by luring your dog around in a circle and rewarding when she completes the circle. when that gets reliable, name it. use this command with sit and down in an unpredictable way to get Sookie to focus more on the command than the predictable sequence. This will open her up to other commands, once she learns that it might take more than a sit or down to get the treat from you.

ACD's like to learn. Don't let her fool you.
