Hello, Im new here, and i hope this isnt the wrong section, but anyhow my Shiba Inu, Sunny has had a long battle with skin irritation/itching possibly due to allergies. This ONLY occurs from fall to spring. I have tried EVERYTHING. I have switched his diet to a vegetarian omega fatty acid food, I give him a multivitamin, I have tried the steriod allergy shots, I got a humidifier thinking the air in my home was too try, I bathe him in allergy relief oatmeal shampoo, I have tried anti-itch spray, i have had him pathogen/parasite skin scrape tested, I have him on frontline. He is constantly scratching and nibbling on his legs, back, ears, and feet. I dont know what else to try! Does anyone else have this problem, and how in the world do you solve it? He acts eats and excersises normally, hes just super itchy and i hate to see him so miserable. Please help! Thanks!

Hi, Sunny. Sorry to hear about your allergies. I have them in the Spring and Fall, too. The steroids usually help me though.

Go to the Breed Specific Forums or click on the link below. The Shibas there are very helpful.

Hi! I can relate to your problem. Our 5-year old shiba developed the same allergy problem in the fall and spring that lasts approximately 5-10 days...like you, I used to feel very bad about seeing her suffer and she would chew her paw pads raw, causing her to limp for days. I went through a couple of different veterinarians and had her skin tested and a very good one told us to try giving her Benadryl antihistamine (pink tablet 25 mg.) I cut each tab into 4 equal pieces and give her (1) of the cut up pieces twice a day - morning and nighttime on her worse days....it makes her sleepy and keeps her from itching. My shiba is 20 lbs. - so she basically has been getting 12.5 mg a day split into two servings...this remedy has helped me over the last three years, like clockwork. Be very careful - I do not give this to her daily (only as needed). I hope that this helps.
