Just joined. I have a Maltese that is not even a year old. I am active on dogster forums but not in the groups. I am having terrible problems with my little guy. He gets terrible mats....I mean terrible. I comb him, I brush him, I bathe him and I use tons of conditioners and detanglers and he still has tons of serious mats!!!! I am very ill and I am in tears right now because I don't know how to prevent these horrible things from happeneing to my baby. He is the sweetest dog I have and I have 4. Is there anything at all I can do to prevent these horrid things. I hate them so much!!!!!

Thanks so much,

Malty's Mom.

P.S. If you have any suggestions at all please pawmail me any help at all!!

I was having trouble with Bella too. But she hates her hair combed. I started taking her to the groomers every four weeks and now keep her in the puppy cut. Those mats are terrible hard to get out once they get to the skin. We had to cut her short and start over, with going to the groomer every four weeks for help. I don't know of any way to get the mats out once they are really bad to the skin but to cut the hair shorter.

Maybe someone else has some advise. This is our first Maltese. I have a Lhasa and his hair isn't so hard to keep up. Plus he likes being combed!

Thank you so much!! I have not been on here much due to illness but I appreciate your help so much!!

I did have to cut him pretty short and I bought a conditioner from PetsMart and I comb him and then put the conditioner on and then shamp0o him and put the conditioner on again and it has worked so far. It is a lot of work and I am ill but I will do anything to keep those mats out. It broke my heart. I got out of the hospital and he hadn't been combed or brushed and it was a big mess.

Thank you very much.

He is my first and I just adore him. He is the sweetest thing ever. I don't know if all Maltese are this sweet but my Yorkie is a little monster compared to him!

I belong to a group called malteseonly.com and they sell shampoo and creme rinse for maltese only. I do tell others about it because I purchase Codys from there and it is very good. I too was going to let Codys hair grow long but about his 1st birthday I was in a severe accidnt and had a crushed wrist, arm and should for about 6 months. It was then I started getting him the puppy cuts and to be honest, I will probobly always will. They're great and besides, why waste all the time doing something they dislike (grooming, brushing, combing) when you could be having quality play time which you both enjoy. You too will feel better because it will take care of the mat problem as well.

Good luck to you!
