A Calm Dog Is A- Good Dog!

We love Dogster. Finally, a website and forums for Dogspeak. I found this group hail and hope some of you experienced ones can help out my Mom. Even though she has PTSD and gen. anxiety disorder, it's pretty much under control (mostly because the pack is always there for her blue dog) and she's started with my beginning training, because I'm the youngest and the calmest. I did pretty well on basic obedience classes. My CGC test is next- and although I do well at home, I get easily distracted when I'm around a lot of different people and dogs!
I know I have to stay calm and focused, but i'ts like I forget most everything I've learned. I know I HAVE to pass this test in order to go on to further training and (I hope, I hope) get my vest and patch, and be able to focus on my job!
I'm a calm, non-agressive big guy who loves all people and all other animals. My Mom tells the trainer that I can do this stuff at home, but when we go out, and do the same things in a different environment, I go blank.
Can anyone tell my Mom what she needs to do so I can relax and pass my CGC test? More training? (we train with my packmates, Vinnie and Casey) She uses the clicker. I don't know, I seem to focus on the treats more; is that a problem? Should we train alone, and not include the other dogs? More exercise, more running, instead of daily walks/jogs? Do I have too much energy for my age- (I'm 2) and breed?
I know this is a pretty long question, but any advice or any suggestions to get me into the next level of training would be so helpful. I know I can do it, but my Mom needs advice and guidance. Thanks Woofs, Sammy

Start slowly working from home, to the yard outside, to the park down the street, to a petstore....gradually increasing the amount of distractions.

Thanks,Odin. The trainer recommended I go to Petco/Petsmart a few times a week, or everyday, until I didn't get so excited and distracted by all the smells and other people. We'll start doing that a lot more often. Much Woofs, Sammy

Exactly. If you find that even in the petstore the dog can't concentrate, try backing up to a less busy environment. Going even from the fenced in backyard to the front yard on leash makes for new distraction environment. Remember, when it comes to a SD, slow is fast.

I think I get it. Instead of just training the commands in the safe non-distracting backyard, or in the house, we start slow- like going out (on leash-at first) into the FRONT yard, and do our commands there, with the people sometimes walking by and maybe neighbors across the street... Like easy does it. Thanks for the advice!
I think we have a long road ahead, but we'll get there.cloud 9

I agree with Odin. For results in public you must train in public. Training in your backyard will only produce results in your backyard or quiet places with no distractions.

Thanks, Taser. We went to Petco, and slowly walked around (instead of letting him sniff whatever he wanted) short leash- and he actually did a sit and down, even with people walking by. Just for a few moments, though- but, still, YAY! happy dance

Way to go Sammy!! cheercheercheer

You want to start off with a short sit stay or down stay at first and slowly increase the time. Don't overwhelm Sammy too fast. Celebrate and praise even the small accomplishments and always end the training session on a positive result because that is what Sammy will remember. Sounds like you and Sammy are doing great. way to go
Best of luck blue dog
