Yoshi is now almost 4 months old and for the last week we have noticed that he's shedding his puppy fur in certain areas that are leaving him bald-like spots with little amount of wiry hair on the skin, like on his thighs, elbows and shoulder areas, and more recently is small patch starting on in the middle of his back. It looks like a rare skin disease. We've contacted the breeder and been to the vet and was checked for the obvious, like fleas, dimadex. Tests were negative and the doctor did not believe it was allergies either. He received his flea prevention treatment a few weeks ago. We also noticed that he does scratch his face and bite his legs every now and then, but nothing really out of the ordinary, be's been shedding alot more in general these days. Other than the these bald spots, his health seems normal.
Could someone let us know if you have seen anything like this?

Oh my goodness! Your puppy Yoshi has the EXACT SAME issues as our Hiro! We just started to notice that Hiro was losing patches of hair. His is on his stomach are, his arm pits, the back of his hind legs, his mid-back, underneath his tail (when it's curled up) and his shoulders. My husband and I thought he might have mange and took him to the vet on Friday. We did the mange test and turned out negative. We also did a fungus test and we won't know the results for 10 days. The vet sent us home with medicated shampoo and a flea and tick preventative (Revolution). He told us to bath Hiro 2 times a week with the special shampoo... He thinks it may be allergies.

And, Hiro also has the wiry hair you are talking about. Honestly at first, I thought that he was getting his adult hair, but I asked around and came to the conclusion that it might be too early??? I could be wrong.

Hiro used to eat Halo, chicken stew recipe for puppies, but doing research online, I saw that Shiba's tend to be allergic to chicken. So, I went out and bought Natural Balance LID, sweet potato and fish formula. I also bought today, Solid Gold Seameal as one of Hiro's pup-pals told us to try it. After researching it, I saw that there were many dogs that had allergy and skin problems subside after being on this nutritional supplement.

We have been scratching our heads and trying to relieve Hiro's itchiness. We even broke down Sunday morning and bought him children's liquid benadryl (per the Vet's request) and gave him 2 cc's. Vet told us 5 cc's, but it seemed too much. Poor Hiro was knocked out. So, unless absolutely necessary, we aren't going to give him benadryl again.

The vet wanted to give Hiro a steroid shot too, but we said no, b/c just a couple days before, Hiro had gotten his last set of puppy shots and his rabies vaccination and we didn't think it would be good to have another shot in his little body.

I think for now, we are going to continue to give him the Seameal and see how he does. Reading the reviews, I saw that many dogs took about 3 weeks to show improvement (hair growing back, less itching).

I also read online that calendula can help irritated skin. SO, this weekend, I went to the organic fruit market and picked up a gel tube of this and put it on the most red parts of Hiro's body to relieve some of the itching.

*SIGH* It's completely frusterating! I hate seeing Hiro in agony... but don't know what more I can do...

I don't know if my post helped you at all... but I wanted to you know that we are going through the exact same thing!

So sorry for your Yoshi...frown

hello Hiro, hope you are doing better now. We've been on holidays the last few days with Yoshi and we've came to the conclusion, and based on what the lady at the pet store told us (she's experienced with shibas), was that he's just shedding his puppy coat. What a relief!

The last few days his fur looked better as we brushed most of it out and the patchiness is gone. He doesn't seem terribly itchy anymore either. The new fur is a little bristly and he looks more like a little coyote now since his top coat has not grown in. I've heard that adding omega3 fats like salmon oil helps with the skin and with the itchiness, we've also been feeding him a few raspberries a day (we mix it up in his food), is a good source of anti-oxidants. The Natural Balance food your feeding sounds like a good choice. We've been on the raw diet with Yoshi since it's what our breeder fed their dogs. The one we're trying is Nature's Variety, though we're open to trying different brands.

I would hold off on the drugs, or shampooing I've heard that often just dries out their skin and natural oils. Just regular brushing will do, and a good lint remover! We found that the metal comb works well even though he hates it! Hang in there, it'll be ok soon!

Yoshi! We hope you had fun on your trip!

Hiro is doing better... His ringworm test came back negative. I had a feeling it would. The hair on his tummy seems to be growing back SLOWLY. The part I'm worried about is the back of his hind legs... they are bald! Poor thing...

Hiro sleeps in his crate, so in the morning, when he comes out of his "bedroom," he itches all over his body for like 5-10 min, it seems. He doesn't itch inside his bedroom, only when he comes out... maybe he's allergic to carpet??? I don't know. We are continuing his seameal and his natural balance food. BUT, I don't know if the food doesn't taste good, but he doesn't eat it like he used too. So, I'll either mix in little chunks of beef or all beef hot dogs for dinner. For breakfast, sometimes I'll put in a little bit of egg, just to get him to eat. Now, he's getting smarter b/c he'll eat the meat/hot dog but now his food and will eat his food later. I mix it all up so that some of the meat juices get on his food. *sigh*

Also, don't puppies lose their hair at 6 months? Are our puppies early starters? His back is the wiry hair and then from his neck to his head is his fluffy puppy hair... is that how Yoshi's hair is?

Hi Hiro,
It sounds like you're having premature puppy shedding also. Yoshi has shed all his puppy fur except his neck and head area too! Usually it happens closer to 6months but I think because of the hot summer we've been having it made it happen sooner. As for the itching, are you in a dryer climate, is it hot where you live? We live in British Columbia so the weather is a little more moderated, Yoshi would itch every now and then but not really excessively. We were advised not to feed him beef just yet (I can't recall what was the reason), we've been feeding him the chicken, lamb, or rabbit formulas. We haven't used shampoo on him just rinsing under the tap is all we've been doing just in case it creates skin irritation.
We've also brought him to the vet twice and got multiple skin scraping for various diseases, all of which were negative. I'm not sure why they didn't know all it was just puppy shedding??
I'm not sure if there's much you can do but to let it run its course and watch him closely, it will be ok soon!

Hi Yoshi!
How weird and funny that we are both looking the same! The course hair on our backs and fluffy hair on our heads!

We live in AZ... it's SO HOT here! AND DRY. Hiro came from Missouri so moving here was probably drastic for him!

I don't know why the vet didn't know that our puppies had premature shedding... I was extremely dissappointed in our vet. I felt that he was robbing us, which he did do a good job of... but in a way, I'm glad we took him to the vet b/c now we know that Hiro does not have mange or ringworm.

Hiro doesn't like his food much anymore so I am going to the store and see what other foods there are that are organic and chicken and grain free... I did some research and saw that shiba's are prone to chicken allergies and so just to be safe, I have took out chicken and grain from Hiro's diet...

I'm glad Yoshi is doing better and Hiro's slowly getting there.... I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

Hi Yoshi and Hiro
I don't know is this will help any or not, but Kiyoshi used to itch at times mainly around the neck (under his collar and/or harness)
His trainer suggested Nutro Lamb and Rice.
He has been on it for 6 weeks or so now and his itching has decreased alot.
