So this is where all the people with the good advice hide. I don't see most of you out there in B and T these days smile

I posted this in B and T but wanted to see if I met get some more ideas here...

I started with a trainer (thanks to Asher smile )with Blue, because she was the "bad" dog (you know the kind of dog only a mother and selected few could love BOL), but I have been doing all our lessons with both dogs. Mostly targeting, and solidifying a lot of our foundation work which both dogs are pretty handy at, and the refresher has been great. So, I decided to play with shaping to make things more interesting.

Blue is a very animated dog, and within 20 minutes I had her spin, target a million and a half things. (on different occasions, not on one 20 minute session) She is the kind of dog that will through a million behaviors at me and really try to experiment to figure out what will get the reward.

Kaya is the obedient dog that all people love because she is so sweet and gentle. Kind of a seen but not heard kind of dog, other than been a mush for a good rub. But when I tried to shape with her it took 20 minutes to just get her to turn her head to one side (to try and shape a spin) and I am not even sure she was really getting that that was what I was trying to "capture" so I could build on it. She just doesn't offer behaviors (except the occasional woof because speak is one of her first "tricks" she learned many moons ago) Now, granted Kaya (6) is a bit older than Blue (3) and definitely more mellow, but how do you get them to "try" more? What are some simple goals I should maybe work on for a dog that offers so little? How do you reanimate them? Can you, or is she just a "lazy" dog and beyond being able to get more into it? I mean she loves to train, she enjoys targeting, and doing basic obedience, but I would like to get her to be more of a "thinker" too.

On another note... I just got my Clicking your way to Rally-O and Control Unleashed... have lots of reading to do smile Summer is coming and 2 months of no work snoopy

Hi Kaya and owner!

Nice to meet you! I'm Annie, a female Pug-Beagle. All thanks to positive reinforcement training techniques that Mama's developed, I know over 100 different tricks and commands!

Now, I think that with your 'older puppy' you should try to get her to do a little at a time. For instance, when I was learning fetch, Mama would begin by treating me for just going towards the object, then biting it, then bringing it, then dropping it in her hand. Make it more of a process for your dog to learn!

Hope this helps!
Annie
