Hi, we are bringing home our chinese crested/ standard poodle mix in less than a week and really want to be the best naked dog mom I can be. I have heard a lot about skin care but no where (in books and the internet) have I found what I am actually supposed to do. Everywhere I do find what little info there is out there it says totally different things. Do they need bathed weekly? sunscrene? lotion? acne meds? shirts in the summer? Do they have food allergies like a chinese shar pei? Any and all info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I find it best for their skin to have a treatment of lotion everyday. I use Curel's fragrance free/hypoallergenic lotion, which is a blue bottle with mostly green lettering.

I bathe Pepper every 3-4 weeks. Many crested owners recommend bathing them once per week, I find that Pepper's skin dries out if I bathe her too much, so I keep it to every 3 weeks usually, unless she gets very dirty. Also, Pepper's skin is very healthy in my opinion, she has rarely had any blackheads so it is better for her specifically to have fewer bathes, her natural skin oils keep her fairly supple regardless. When I bathe her I use "High Cascade" 4-in-1 shampoo & conditioner, it is an emu-oil formula and it is as gentle as oatmeal shampoo. After she is dry I put some aloe vera everywhere, then when that is dry I put her lotion on. I don't shave Pepper because she is a very hairless.

I have two hairy-hairless puppies right now though, what I will use is an oster finisher/trimmer. Here is a link to a breeder's page on how they shave their cresteds:

I personally love their crazy hair right now, but I will be getting them used to the sound of a shaver very soon so they can get accustomed to it. I only put sunscreen on Pepper when it is over 90 degrees outside or if she is going to be outside for at least a few hours in the sun. Even hypoallergenic sun blocks have made her skin brake-out so I mostly just put a lot of aloe vera on her AFTER she has been in the sun, which prevents her skin from peeling.

Also, what I did whenever Pepper has gotten a zit: I would wash her thoroughly with the emu-oil shampoo (that I mention earlier) and put neosporan ointment on the blemishs. Also, if your crested starts to break out regularly or increasingly try changing their bedding more frequently and use a less-harsh detergent on fabrics that your crested will be touching a lot.

One cause for my Pepper to have such wonderful skin is likely due to a corn-free, by-product free diet. I feed all my dogs Diamond Lamb and Rice Adult; Neutro has a very similar product if that is more readily avaliable in your area. Lamb and rice formula is very good for their skin and reduces the chance for skin problems.
